  1. Are you using the old stippling technique? I do and have no bubbles, unless I missed my wetout time with too fast of a hardener mix and need to work it with a hairdryer. Most resins, I use a 50/50 mix of slow and fast hardener with the 385 MGS. Typical micro on foam should be a milkshake consistency. I dont use a "hot-box" I just use the air temp which should be about 80 degrees MINIMUM, in my book. I really like 85 degrees for lay-up work and the cure timeline. I found the shop should be that temp for a few hours prior to the lay-up work. It does no good to put resin or micro down on relatively cool foam or glass tie-ins...it just cools down to that surface temp very quickly like a heatsink/coolsink. A hair dryer, not a heatgun is also helpful sometimes in getting flow, once the resin is being worked into the fabric. A final creditcard wipe to remove excess resin and then apply peelply, and maybe some added resin on top of the peelply is needed. Some small parts I have not peelplyed. All of this is really from chapter 3, so it is really old school, but it does work well, and produces nice work. At least a few thousand planes have been built this way, so I think I am in good company. Good luck! Thats my .02 FWIW
  2. Did you want these for a Long or a Cozy? Gary Hunter sells both sizes, and the Cozy ones are bigger. You may already know that.I had a pair of Gary's, I cant speak for the Featherlights, but his are beautifully made and lightweight. I've lost his ph #, so cant help you there.
  3. So thats what was referred to. Check. Flox not micro.
  4. Good idea. Also maybe make the covers attach in the corners with some velcro tabs. Covers would be a good idea no matter what your window is made of.
  5. I'm confused, but thats nothing new. What foam were you taking OFF of the seatback? Maybe OUT of but not OFF of? Why are you removing foam off of something there? Also, the flox fillets are used when you are stripping the seatback [and bulkheads] to the fuse sides with the 2" BID tapes.
  6. Goat. Hang onnnn doood! Chill. I wish I could hand you my meds but I cant. Before I was informed of the price, I was reading their blurb, thinking. "ohh hey thats cool NO EI...THAT will be cheaper. Ohhh, hey... No FI, SIMPLER...Thats gonna be CHEAPER... No valves, thats gonna be Cheaper, this is sounding pretty cool. Oh they wanna sell the mount and the starter, and the alternator is all in one package.....Better buying power in a package = cheaper. COOL. So I left the website thinking well, I bet its still going to be priced like an Eggenfelter[sp] subaroo setup even though everything is simpler. Thats at 34K plus the mount...say, 35k. That would be too bad- Cozy builders will have a cow at paying that...so much for the diesel in a Cozy idea. Then Bob sent me the email. ^%65,000.$$!! And I thought wow, those boys are up in the night. Until they have a certificated engine, [whicj most experimental builders wont pay for anyway] they are smoking some serious crack. But maybe they are not delusional, maybe they really feel it is first a European powerplant solution, or experimental-wise maybe the RV hoards will want them to go with their 95,000. Chelton EFIS' [man thats a crazy vendor as well IMHO]. I dont know. Turbo normalizing sounds great for high cruise, but it doesnt pull you off the ground when you need/want it. I could see them trying to justify that price on a turboed 300hp unit but 180-200hp, but it isnt. They have some bright people their, so obviously this makes sense to somebody. Flying in Euro land seems to demand a diesel, maybe they think that that market is also going to be demanded in China. However given the lack of regard for environmentalism in China I dont know. I am also amused by the 2000 TBO perception of EXP builders who are reluctant to buy a 1000 hour 540 because it will cost a percieved "LOT of money" to overhaul it when it hits the magic #. First, most guys fly less than 100 hours per year and second; I am rebuilding mine for about 8-10 grand. If so, a guy can fly the typical next 10 years on an $15,000 engine, and if at that next 10 year point it makes sense to go to a diesel, you can do it. Oh yea, NOBODY but the manuf can do the rebuild on the DeltaHawk, and its a for sure, NOW, price of 15 grand. Wanna bet it will be more expensive 10 years from now? Another ouchhh, for a four cylinder power plant. But again 2000 hours at 100-200 hours of flight time=10 to 20 years. They do claim some amazing savings. Just on spark plugs for instance!! Yow.
  7. New news forwarded from the Canrad mailing list. Deltahawk is ALIVE!!! On their Firewall forward list the have a link to specifically a Firewall backwards assembly with everything included for the CozyIV. Thats in the works! Before ya'll get yer Sunday best on and your once a week shave, be sure a load your pockets with lots of greenbacks. The package costs about 65k. Ouchhhhh. I think they are trying to take Theilert's old place in the marketplace. But it is nice they will be willing to sell to Cozy's as well as Velocity's. Theilert wasnt doing that.
  8. I was just think how great his panel was laid out. Very nice. Ya gotta be kiddin us Phil, the shadows "under" the "stickers" were a nice paint effect. And it is a nice illusion. The tradition to the eeeeeeezeeee was fun also. Kudos.
  9. Thanks Mike, I have fun with it. Glad you're amused. =) I know I drive Marc nuts with my ...'s and iffy grammer. But what the heck. BTW, Hows the eco-fuel going?
  10. Those look great! and will be great looking through.
  11. It does prove you have a big lathe! Now, Me, I am just conceited, overconfident, poorly informed, and immature...what can I say? Oh, add to that I have succeeded in gaining several unwanted pounds and you've got a pretty good picture of me.
  12. I have two share two emails with the group. It explains a lot. I wont post the two pictures, but they are real and may prove the existence of Alien technology, or at least the evolution of a species called CanardusHomoflyamus. YMMV. From: john morrison Subject: spinner To: "Dennis Passey" Date: Monday, October 26, 2009, 4:36 PM I could not find a wood lathe with a 14 inch swing so I improvised. Used a certified 14 inch spinner of a twin cessna someone gave me, made the cross frame work to hold a 1 inch dowl centered in the spinner, waxed the inside of the spinner and brushed on mold release, used pour foam and let cure. Pulled out of the spinner and used a bottom plum bob for a lower center rotater on the dowl, threaded a 3/8 bolt in the top of the dowl, put in the drill press and presto, a vertical wood lathe. Put some 36 grit paper on a flat 3x 3 ft board and sanded to shape. Really turned great. It is 13 inches and will go all the way to the flywheel. Finished the bottom cowl today but need to order some supplies to finish. Jack __________________________________ My Sophomoric email reply; Well Jack, You are not well. You are a sick man. Very sick. I would try to help you but I dont think there's is a cure for it. Your last email is the latest in evidence that you have a rare disease. I just dont what to do with you. I think It all started years ago when you were watching that blasted Gilligan's Island. You said "Dam, that Professor comes up with all kinds of stuff. He can make a friggin radio set out of a coconut! I gotta take notes on this guy!"... Then you started watching MacGuyver... That finished you off. Everybody knows that Macguyver can literally, if you give him say, 40 minutes, roughly the time his TV program runs each episode, avert a complete nuclear meltdown in a Triton class USsubmarine, and the demise of the Crispy Creme Donut franchises, with just a ball of string, a penknife, some crayons, and a rubber chicken. You caught on to that real fast. Somewheres along the way you developed this ability of making something out of nothing. "Hey here's a trash can, I'll make a custom Barbecue out of it"!! On and on it went. I think the tipping point came with the Pest and Critter control, anti-raccoon, device you assembled from that 120db spud-gun and Judy's Extra large Revlon hairspray can. Ethel down the street a block, said the flames almost melted her mailbox that one evening when you arced a couple good ones towards "Rocky" running away on top of the power lines out front. You could have at least tried it out in the backyard. Things like that are hard to keep quiet. You must know those guys down at the FireDept prettttty well by now. And to think you are the head of the Loss Mitigation Dept for the City of Aurora!!!! I am ROFLMAO!!! So... with that the tin cans and strings got taut in a hurry, and word got out in the neighborhood. People started to hide their GoodWill Industries curbside donations. "No telling what that man around the corner could come up with if he got a hold of Grammas old worn out recliner, the ripped ironing board with the tassels, and that old stringless electric guitar. Dont forget the toaster, CANT put out the toaster.....ffrgetgvahgblubb blub... He could create maybe some kind of flying machine." Then...they found out. Despite their best efforts at not trying to feed your obsessive compulsive creativeness, they were no match, and realized it when they found out about the chemicals you were stockpiling in your garage. The chemicals...oh, your chemicals!!! Epoxies, and hardners , and slowerners, and fasterners, acetotes and thinnerotes!!! White glistening fabrics and ominous BLACK carbon fabrics... And the dreaded, suspicious white powders in large bags also in your garage!!! Shades of the 80's, where's Sonny and Tubbs when you need them!!!! Keep the children awaaaaaaaaaaaaay! "That man is up to no good....I tell you, no good, no good at all!" Ahhhh, Yessssss, he says he's building an AEROplane!! "HMMMM, I bet they all say that", was the hushed. behind cupped hands, reverberation around Blackberry Lane. Enough! So they kicked your ass out and ran you down the street on a long wooden rail till it finally came to rest at the airport. The neighbors all put their hoes, pitchforks and stick-torches away, but still give a wide berth when passing by your driveway. Their sideways looks and cupped hands over open mouths may have seemed to subside, but in reality, its just relief that whatever Jack was doing in THAT garage...he is now doing it somewhere else. Parents even let their kids walk around outside, these past few years! So....I say all that, to get to this. Now you send me some pictures of an upside down Viking hat, a couple of flat sticks and a old Jewish Dredle, and you pop out a custom vertical lathe and a custom built-to-fit aircraft spinner. Just like that, Wham, Bam, Thankyou Man. With your few emailed words above, you describe your seemingly simple alchemic process from concept to reality. Like Captain Kirk synopsisizing to Spock the recap on defeating the Romulans, with a simple leaky Tribble, a common cold, and that blasted rubber chicken again. Cue the StarTrek music. I bet if Gilligan and the professor had seen this latest development of yours they would have wished you were on that Crazy Island with them. I rest my case. Oh....the name of the disease you ask?...... I-N-N-O-V-A-T-I-O-N. You got the moves Jack. Its your game. Dance in the endzone Big Daddy. =)=) And I have to say, that as far as defense, I can only assume your reply to this would be. "Guilty as charged". However, I still will inform you I am looking for a treatment, or antidote, or something for your condition. If I dont find it, no great loss. Just please keep sending me updates and photos of your mania...I appreciate anything you can tribble my way. =) Cheers, Me Dennis Passey N513DP Cozy540xtra Carmel Valley,CA
  13. I just want to say that a guy like Bruce who has a fine artistic eye can obviously see a change in curvature from one profile shape to another. Not sure about the wordage getting in the way of things, but the above is a given.
  14. You bad. Now, Marvel Mystery Oil is great, in the shop....and in the BDRM. My bad. I didnt hear the scotch tape/ nose strut one. That is how I held the washers on my pivot. Is that what you are referring to? That noselift assembly is a bugger to get in for me.
  15. If I recall right, my rudders are 37" tall and the widest point is 8-1/4" at the bottom. The bottom is a horizontal cut. You will find the rudder swing will make you cut a little more if the inboard side of the horizontal rudder cut. My top piece will be a couple of inches tall to house the lighting. There is plenty of rudder on these planes so a guy doesnt have to freak about losing a bit of rudder to the blend. Best to worry about the overall height IMHO. If you have Jacks sketch then you see the "bellcrank" is more of a vertical assembly piece, that a horizontal bellhorn. I wasnt sure what you were asking back there. =/
  16. I dont have a bell crank. I can send you a pic of the rudder cut out shape when I get back from outoftown, I dont have my other laptop. See above but also; Little confusing about what you are asking. Yea, you skin the rudders completely before you cut them out? The rudder conduit did go in prior to glassing, if that is what you are asking...or...The rudder tops out at the top. Chris E. finished his like that. I am putting a piece on top that has my running lights & strobe in it. No, you dont build the top till afterwards, if that is what you are wanting for the top of your rudders. ????????????????
  17. What brand/model of radio are you installing? The Garmins are like 12" deep. Maybe if you went with a Becker [smaller depth] or a Narco. Or maybe mount the pitch trim along the elev torque tube in a diff place?
  18. So Rich, I only want a 1-1/2 inch to 2" max deep cushion thickness. What do I do then? What makes up my spine friendly, cruise friendly, temperfoam, red, blue, etc sandwich? I found this really great black 1/2 inch foam at Orchard Supply that is pretty darn dense, but very comfortable, and was thinking to maybe use that under a 1" layer of temperfoam. I was hoping that was my solution. I originally thought about just using 3 layers [1-1/2" total] of that Orchard stuff, it is so pleasant to sit on, yet firm. I was wondering though, if I contact cemented the layers together, I would probably have to do them in the aircarft while the cement cured, because they would take a better seat shape then. They also would also probably remain somewhat that seat shape when removed out of the plane, to upholster. That Orchard foam is also very inexpensive for the quality feel of it. Thoughts from you Rich, & other users?
  19. Hey, having fun is my sickness. I just cant help myself. TMann, knows I'm just a "Bill The Cat" You want REAL crazy, I am rewriting the book on Cozy crazy, with my latest ideas. I think they will have to be revealed after they are done and finished on my aircraft.
  20. Let me be the first to say, CONGRATULATIONS!!
  21. This is starting to take on a life of its own. Can we get the CAD guys in here to start working on this thing?
  22. Just whipped this up in case you were having trouble visualizig it. Just trying to be of help.
  23. Quiet flight. Hmmm? Glider, not quiet enuf. Funky radiator nosed powered thing with 15 foot belly muffler...seeking for quiet enuf status. Willing to suffer comparisons of Dr Suess, and the like in the quest. Aeronautical engineers not consulted for aero anything, due to the desire for a "reverse airboat" appearance. Ahhhhh. I have been wondering whats behind this post of yours..... Hmm, maybe.... Okay. All tongue in cheek, of course since it was featured in the Beatles movie, Sgt Peppers lonely hearts club band, and therefore a cultural incon of the day. You have made your case... Funky is, as Funky does. Tmann, I know you are fond of the tractor powerplant rotary guys at FlyRotary, but I sincerely hope this doesnt mean you are ditching you plans approved engine location, due to this incredibly revealing rotary configuration. If so, I really must insist you take the blue pill and come back over to our side of reality. This is a mod that will only bode ill for you, particularly should you decide to sell. It is also, I predict a sure way to become the talk of every FBO, and fly-in you waggle into...and I dont mean that in a good way. ...and in my minds final review of the above, it is just a shame, as all the way up to this point in time, it appeared you were really building a fine canard machine. It seems a tragedy you would become so blinded by having a successful rotary tractor installation. Canards, friend, have the spinning thing on the back. It's just gotta be that way, or they look and act funny. Please rethink your forwarding of this new modification on the forum...it looks heavy and draggy, and not in keeping with your weight conscious efforts, nor the canard tradition. I dont even think Tracy Cook would approve of your present direction. Call me and I can reccomend a good therapist in your locale from my therapist's network, so you can talk over the issues that have led you to forward this idea. It just so not like you.
  24. Looks like a nice aircraft converted to a butt ugly contraption. Why?
  25. Your mission Ian, should you choose to accept it: 450# front seat capability necessitates the cutting off your canard tips to put the spacers in, i.e, the longer canard. Dennis Oelman is your Iowan contact. This message will self-destruct in 5 seconds. Pfffffssssssst.
