You might be right. I just don't know enough to say. Generally I just do what they tell me to do regarding wiring but when I installed the power for the Lightspeed, I used some two-wire twisted cable with a shield. Lightspeed does not require that sort of cable. He uses a single-wire with a shield. The power travels up the inner wire and returns through the shield (pic). I figured it would not hurt to ground the shield of my cable at one end so that's what I did. It may not have been necessary. I think I'll redraw that again and use Lightspeed's wiring (and keep my own bunged up wiring to myself). 🙂 But yes, I'm sure you are correct about grounding audio wire shields at only one end--the radio end. I have a friend using a Sigtronic intercom that picks up the transponder pulse. The Sigtronic diagram does not call for any shielding. I showed him the PM1000 diagram which calls for shielding. Better intercom, I think. Edited December 4, 2021 by Kent Ashton Quote -KentCozy IV N13AM-750 hrs, Long-EZ-85 hrs and sold
Barry
The rule of thumb we have used in industrial electronics, ground the shield on the source end for DC signals, and both ends for AC. When you have DC that is pulsed at higher frequency (encoders for example) the "guidelines" get murky. For high frequency encoders we have done it both ways, with good results either way. The why is complex...
Kent Ashton
Good reminder, Barry. On a different topic, my dual Lightspeed Plasmas use manifold pressure inputs to vary timing. The input into the boxes fits a small 1/8" ID hose so I was using small Nylaflow lines forward of the firewall. I noticed that the lines had avgas residue in them and blew them out but I also found the "T" connector was completely clogged with a gummy avgas residue which was probably blocking pressure. No telling how long that had been there. I have about 750 hours on the systems. I think I will go to bigger lines. The manifold pressure is taken off a primer fitting (with a tiny hole) screwed into the intake of one cylinder, thence via a 1/8 soft copper line through the firewall--about 3 feet of line, then to the Nylaflow and T divider. I am not sure why avgas would get moved that far away from the intake but the lines need a regular check. mquinn6
that is strange - my understanding the MAP is a diaphragm so that cavity between the bung on the engine where you pick up pressure - to whatever gauge it is should be an air pocket... 2 thoughts... 1 - a VERY small leak 2- plumbed so that gravity is not your friend. (combined). IF the residue of where the bung is on the engine allows fluid (from the walls) to somehow cover the pickup point.. Maybe even (rather than a leak) just heat and cooling (expand contract) could pull this into the line... (then gravity does the rest...). Does the line descend just as it leaves the engine MAP point? I would think a small line is better than a big - just to provide more immediate reaction? (and not take up space in the airplane (and weight))
Barry
It's also the color of your lines. Standard nylaflow is not fuel rated. Nylaflow LM is fuel rated. Not sure if that is an issue... Are your lines nylaflow? Looks like it might be something else.

Klaus just told me this size line with a primer fitting in the cylinder head was too restrictive and I should drill out the primer fitting and use a slightly larger line (min .1" ID) Quote -KentCozy IV N13AM-750 hrs, Long-EZ-85 hrs and sold
mquinn6
OMG!!! I can hear Klaus' voice explaining what you just said Kent!!!! LOL!!!! Barry
Gotcha. I always assume that vacuum lines will get gasoline vapor at some point, which will eventually return to a liquid state IMO. On cars anyway. Same thing should be true of aviation engines I *think*. That is pretty small at 0.079 ID. The 3/16 is 0.111 and the 1/4 is 0.15, which I'm sure you already know. I like the nylaflow hose for many things. Tough and durable, and holds its shape very well. I use a lot of the 3/8's in industrial applications. Kent Ashton
A rant about JP Instruments: I used their Slimline Tach, a nice little digital tach which expect a +5V, 1 pulse per rev signal. My Lightspeed Plasma puts out a +10V, 2 pulses per rev. So I need to fool the tack into thinking my 4-cyl engine is an 8-cyl. Their literature says https://www.jpinstruments.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/SLTACH_INSTALL.pdf Here is print 420810, See any "Pin 9"? No. In fact the pins are not numbered and there is no Pin "9" marked on or inside the unit although the print is adequate for use with a magneto. JPI Tech support is worthless: no idea about the pin or how to wire the tach to a Plasma. JPI Sales also has no idea and says "This tach is obsolete and we are going to probably discontinue it" but they are still selling them with their faulty 1994 instructions. I asked who manages the company. Somebody named "Scott" but they won't tell his last name or email. A little sleuthing reveals one Scott Waldmann. It appears I can use a CD3014 IC chip and divide the 2 plasma pulses into 1 with some simple wiring. https://www.eleccircuit.com/cd4013-dual-d-type-flip-flops-datasheet/ I suspect the tach will tolerate the Plasma +10V signal but I can step it down with a simple voltage divider if necessary. Waiting for parts. The funny thing is that I used the tach with a Plasma I and got it to work somehow although it was a little squirrely. Kent Ashton
Listening to this very interesting video on coronary calcium scoring. (Below) I was always pretty healthy. A little overweight but felt good. Then I had a heart attack (clot/blockage) at age 59 1/2, went on statins, had another one 13 years later. So I KNOW I have arteriosclerosis and statins did not prevent my 2nd HA. There is much new info saying that cholesterol and LDL are not your enemy. It is carbs, sugar, and foods with a high glycemic index—all of which I used to eat freely. But that’s not my point here. This doctor says that a 10 minute CT scan of your heart can give you a coronary calcium score which is highly and reliably predictive of arteriosclerosis. This is little help to me now but were I a younger man, I would take that test for sure because fighting with the FAA to get Special Issuances is a real PIA. https://youtu.be/afW7ZNMfaec I have found very interesting and, I hope, life-preserving info on two YouTube channels: “Low Carb Down Under” and “Eat Mostly Fat”. Kent Ashton
Finishing up on my JPI tach + LIghtspeed Plasma problem discussed above https://www.canardzone.com/forums/topic/18661-kents-long-ez-project/?do=findComment&comment=80731 After much head-scratching I discovered there was no tach output from one of the Plasmas. After trying everything else I hooked the tach up to the other Plasma box and it was fine. It might have been an improperly wired connector from the first plasma but this harness came from LIghtspeed and it is a little awkward to remove and check at this point My chip idea (to convert 2pp/Rev to 1pp/Rev) worked on the bench but was not needed. Neither was a voltage divider to reduce the 12V Plasma output to 5-6 V for the tach. This makes sense because my tach worked with my older Plasma that also output 2pp/Rev at 12V. I don't recall if I ordered it to that spec from JPI. It was fun doing a little electronics work, though. 🙂 Edited January 3, 2022 by Kent Ashton Quote -KentCozy IV N13AM-750 hrs, Long-EZ-85 hrs and sold
Kent Ashton
A guy on FB asked about how long he can idle his engine before takeoff without overheating. I have never encountered any long delays except leaving Oshkosh, where the engine starts cold, or arriving Sun-n-fun, where the engine is already hot and there is a slow-moving queue for parking. I don't have a number but I think it's good to wire your airplane so you can shut off the engine and monitor the radio. With an E-bus (Essential bus) you can shut off the power, turn on the E-bus turn off non-essential equipment and listen to the radio. That's probably good for over an hour. I had to use that once when I was denied entrance to the D.C. SFRA. I had to land outside the SFRA and refile my flight plan. I never figured out why but it was handy to be able to sit and monitor the radio. We flew into Mannasas once--inside the SFRA--the train to Washington was just a short walk away. Kent Ashton
Just reading this accident today: an apparent heart attack in flight. http://www.kathrynsreport.com/2022/01/medical-event-piper-pa-28-181-n75191.html Having had two of them (on the ground) I am more interested in preventing one of these in the air. I was never a big sugar user--always stuck to the diet colas and stevia in my cereal-- but 6-8 dates in my oatmeal was pretty normal and we liked our oatmeal cookies. Sweet tea was a regular. However, I have been educated on high fructose sugar. Americans used to eat 9 pounds of sugar a year. Now they eat 80-100 pounds (estimates vary). In the hospital the other day, the waiting room drink machines were filled with 20 oz full-sugar drinks. A 20 oz Pepsi has 9.2 HEAPING teaspoons of high fructose sugar (69g) (pic), a Mountain Dew 10.25. It's crazy when you look at the fat patients waddling in and yep, I am one. Maybe you never thought much about high fructose sugar but this doctor has some excellent videos on the problem. Here is one https://robertlustig.com/fructose2/ As I understand it, sugar doesn't block arteries but it leads to diabetes which damages the arteries and leads to coronary plaques. Check dates on the Glycemic Index. Yikes! Quote -KentCozy IV N13AM-750 hrs, Long-EZ-85 hrs and sold

Kent Ashton
I have an electric pitch trim (a 3.7V screwdriver motor) operated through a PWM and a Carling toggle switch mounted just behind the throttles. Here is a cheaper idea which could work just as well using two Grayhill DPST pushbuttons ($4,00 each) and a $5.00 ebay PWM (pulse width modulator). The wiring would be simple. Yeah, I would like to have a two $200 hat switches on the stick like the big boys but as little as I use the trim, a couple of pushbuttons would suit me fine and be simpler than what I have now. The only downside I can see is that if you push both buttons at once, you would blow a fuse but make some little guards around them. Kent Ashton
My GP is bothered by me going off statins but he was not interested in the youtube doctors I've learned from. He said "I read the journals" and "don't be your own doctor". Fine, but it shows me he is not open to new information. Ya know, my brother had bypasses at age 50, went on statins, exercised, lost weight, and died in the car leaving his gym. I took them for 11 years and still had a second heart attack. No, I do not trust modern medicine. On a happier note: I was Just talking to a chap about crosswind operations. I try to avoid strong crosswinds but when I encounter them, I try to remember to lineup on the upwind side of the runway, pointed to the downwind side with aileron into the wind. Let the crosswind weathervane the aircraft into R/W alignment. Brake use will increase takeoff roll enormously so try to avoid it. For landing, I fly a full crab until just before touchdown, then kick it straight, make it land before a drift sets in and put aileron into the wind. 1 Quote -KentCozy IV N13AM-750 hrs, Long-EZ-85 hrs and sold
