  1. The inspection of the wing attach is not trivial. Mine was alodined before assembly and always indoors (not costal) so I feel pretty good about mine.... YMMV (or YFTMV (flight time)).
  2. assuming after "plane being rebuilt from scratch has no damage history now" the FAA provided provisions to return to service (flight testing). Sorry for all the costs that you must have incurred! I agree, not taking shortcuts on safety is paramount. (that red one is not N220EZ - or that repair list would be a BIT longer....) <<we should move this to another thread to keep this one on the topic of "sales-ive-seen">>
  3. The tail number is NOT what designates the aircraft. It is the manufacturer and the serial number. Aircraft change tail numbers all the time. (I have heard unscrupulous builders take name plates from salvaged aircraft and stick them on their aircraft to avoid needing to go thru the silly AW (which you can request a copy from FAA) and 40hr fly off time....) - and chain of custody is just a scribble on a piece of paper and sent in...)
  4. Wasn't Valdosa GA where that Govt auction EZ sold - for 1,600 bucks?
  5. Not sure if you have access to a junk computer or tablet to go to that link - it might be a file (worm) to get access to your computer and contents. Make certain the person is the person on the FAA registry - if not you will (maybe) have a chain of custody challenge. These scammers (if in aviation) know this and actually set up fake emails and fake facebook accounts with that persons name - they can even spoof the number they call you from to make it that person! Sometimes things like this are legit - but I would never send any money until you actually put hands on it and met the person - in person. (heck - even then check their drivers license! These scammers are getting REAL good at their trickery! I even had one be so bold and call me out on a forum saying I was delaying the sale to someone else! If they say they NEED a deposit before you meet... get those hairs raising. (they will tell you they have had 100 people calling and you just happen to be the first... (of course they say that to the other 99). I wish the world would be a better place, but we just have to deal with it... it will get worse before it gets better.
  6. I ask them to call me... My personal number is 911-231-5552.....
  7. Looking at the profile for @EmptyBox - his name is "Michael" and is in CA. The youtube is "Dan".... so @zolotiyeruki, I think you are correct...
  8. @EmptyBox? (I was assuming that he posted the youtube link that it was he that is the "guy"). Hard to tell the quality from video - but I do not see anything grievous modified from what I know about the Vari.... I recalled Marc finding misoriented layups on a inspected main spar - not sure how "nice" it looked... There are a lot of "experts" on the internet... ESP Youtube where they hide behind aliases...
  9. @EmptyBox - I do not know your skill set - but there are some VERY talented people interested in people being successful with canards here. I encourage to set up a separate topic and share questions and finds as you go thru your new investment. Do not get offended by comments like "probably should rebuild xyz part" - as they know what it means to have failures (life or death). There is a guy kinda in your area (maybe) Marc (marc_zeitlin@alum.mit.edu) that does prebuy inspections.
  10. My chance to contribute (something useful this time)... https://www.facebook.com/groups/Aircraft.for.sale/permalink/5447056505373919/?sale_post_id=5447056505373919
  11. Maybe a good start, maybe not… anyone here get this white elephant?
  12. Actually, I recently was told of a scam method unscrupulous people use to steel money.... they post a picture of an airplane (not theirs) - and get a response and ask "what is your best offer?" and they get lowballed (like maybe offering $30k (15k under Marc's spitball thought based on the limited info given). Then the "seller" says, I NEED to sell this (aka first sign of scam - heightened urgency) - and says if they velmo or cash app $5k he will hold it for you to review all the paperwork and come pick it up with the balance in cash or bank check... (even offer 100% refund if not everything they desired!) They spoof the phone number so the real owners name pops up (it is a short lived phone number of course) - and even an email account for the velmo/cashapp that kinda sounds like what an owner of an airplane like this would maybe have "longandEZ@hotmail.com" (again short lived for the duration of the scam. One transfers the deposit thinking they just got a FANTASTIC deal - a $95k plane for ONLY $35k... To never hear from "the seller" again after the $5k transfer is complete. an example that my friend showed me (he is a cop interested in aviation and he said there is little that can be done). PLEASE be careful out there - these bad actors are becoming more and more clever and frequent. They obviously have no moral compass. (not to say THIS Long-EZ is not built to perfection and the photos are just not very good and this person actually believes it is worth this much.... but, I feel this might be one of those scams) M.
  13. red the price go up. If it were carbon fibre motif it would be well over 150k
  14. Yes, I have a pretty good feeling with my current direction (and advice that has been provided). But until I have that AWC - every second and penny I spend fixing this VariEze is a risk.
  15. @pilothicks, My Varieze debacle is not regarding the registration (I did get the chain of custody worked out). my challenge was that I was told it was a flying airplane (and it looks like it had from the wear marks on the controls and pilot elbow areas). However - FAA did not have AWC date in records and claims it never had. Yes - the way of getting a plane new airworthiness working thru a DAR is exactly what I need to do with mine (If FAA does not have one on record). I have talked to 5 different DARs about hypotheticals to understand what they need in my area... Being that most are not familiar with fiberglass moldless construction - they were wanting to see build logs and validation of what parts were built in a factory. To get the chain of custody for THIS opportunity - if one could get hold of Michael Vendi and have HIM fill out the paperwork to transfer ownership to the new buyer, that is all the FAA _needs_. The fact that it was being held onto in storage by Don Morris is not material (from an FAA perspective) (as explained to me by the FAA HQ). I will not get into the mess of what an outstanding bank lien on record can do to this effort (a friend of mine told me his horror story!) So... bottom line: Need to make certain one buys a safe airplane AND can managed the paperwork for owner transfer and AW. After all - it is not the plane - it is the pitot.
  16. Condition/Annual = Condition/al 😉 - yes Marc making fun of my errors.... So per FAA records it Does have AW 07/23/1984 - so one would be able to get a duplicate copy. You MAY be able to reach Don Yoakam to see if he found the logs (build logs not as critical as flying logs - however it would be piece of mind for certain to know that it was built to plans with no deviations! I do not think they had cameras back in the 80's so logs would only be written notation (just kidding, you never know..). For 10k - you MIGHT have a good starting point - a condition or pre-buy from someone like Marc would be a smart thing to do unless you KNOW what you are looking for on these birds. Layers of paint either tells me that repairs were made, was parked on a ramp tied down, or had creative colors along its life... Prob smart to get down to first primer or last fill and save 20-50 lbs or more... Chain of custody SEEMS feasable - it just would need to be done. Does not say much about engine other than "was not pickled"... so... Thinking "big OLD white elephant"...
  17. I did not see the N number to look it up. The valid registration is quite different than a valid AWC (ask me how I know this 😉 ). Thanks for the clarification on the IP - we always treated it as “major” in the certified world. I would put my own “work the bugs out” restrictions and documented test plan (and fresh W/b - even though could be calculated…) for this even though not required! I would assume the plane was out of annual - so if no conditional, I would certainly get a thorough pre-buy inspection.
  18. Full chain of ownership, valid copy of AW, condition inspection, and faa fsdo phase flight approval for major change (to add the instruments is a sig change)..
  19. I do like the side view windows on N36SD... My Rans S9 has this and is handy on landing. I am also a fan of Beaslys rear bottom view. adds comfort to the person in the back as the wing hides so much.
  20. I found finding new cylinders now is a bit challenging - and I am more prone to overhaul... (my last one had a cracked spark plug hole - and to fix it (by them) would have been way more than a new cylinder)
  21. 52 hrs is very low hours - the fact that it has been sitting around for 15 years would mean going thru the engine unless it was pickled… original builder? Wing tip gear - or hoop gear? build logs? Air worthiness? Chain of custody? definately get someone that is knowledgeable about these planes to do a pre buy before you dive in.
  22. Absolutely true - follow the money. Ever wonder how the “food pyramid” was designed? Or even the current “best practice” for eating (what ever it is called…. It is set up by the a group of people that are dairy farmers, cattlemen, etc. that insist that everyone needs to have their product to be healthy… Dr.s are no better they get visited by pharma and pitched their drugs.. that is where they get their “facts” - from the sales people! diet book writers are the same… we need to pay attention to our own bodies and adjust to what it is telling us!
