    Canopies

OK, I have the tinted Aircraft Plastics. When we ordered 2 canopies we got discount (30%IIRC) and we saved a heap on the sipping by sharing. (to South Africa) Anyway, I seem to have a problem with the fitting of the canopy set-up as it is ... The front lip of my canopy has lifted and does so even more during the flight. It's proud by about 1/8" or more, but I can't measure during flight And it was so perfect when it was just completed ... How can one correct this? At this time I'm looking at adding about that much material to the Instrument Panel ... the one that meets the canopy.
  2. Congratulations! You'll enjoy the construction trip :-) Don't skip the "educational" chapter :-) C Van Hoof Plans # 219
  3. But does anyone know how the cold air up high was dealt with in the powerful old planes? Cowl flaps? or other air restrictors in front of the radiators? My motor got real cold! Yes I know, it's not like yours :-)
  4. My wife and stepson get those type of headaches. In their case they are tension induced (OK, don't go there). They can get rid of them by manipulating / massaging the upper shoulder muscles (towards the neck). It relieves the spasm and reduces the chance of headache and subsequent pain, stress and nausea. Hope this helps some!
  5. Thanks for sharing the trip description and photos! Anything they can do about that migrane type stuff? <sympathy smiley>
  6. the MGL unit just went all the way in the Henshaw Challenge, helping to break the record by some 18+ hours. They were not happy with the Stormscope - by another company. Their equipment was not sponsored, they bought or borrowed.
  7. Hi, About that turbo thing :-) Alfons Gessl has an TIO motor in his Velocity. The heating problems in the area of the turbo are immense and has various resultant problems. It melted (nearly thru) the one aileron linkage on that side. now fixed. Anyway, this problem has been going on for 2 years and he is considereing (so i understand) removing the turbo. FWIW. About your intended cruise of 150-160 kts at 12K ... just a 180hp would do that, IMHO. regards Chris Van Hoof Cozy Mk IV, IO-360. Johannesburg
  8. You people crack me up ... so early in the morning too. So, I won't do the Vegimite, since I don't do the Marmite :-) Thanks for the recommendation

    Trim Problem

DaveB, how does this differ from the feeling when you are 2 up in the plane ... is it still the same on the trim? What is your calculated CofG position when you are experiencing this required forward stick force? How does it feel when you come in to land, do you have sufficient up trim? Solo and dual? cvh PS, I have experienced same and got a massive speed increase by forcing the stick forward (stick forces = quite tiring).... after altering the battery position in my Cozy I have not been able to replicate the speed! 200,454 Kt to 179 Kt ...
  10. My Cozy operates exactly as per the POH. even on gross. My operations are mainly from BaraG (FASY). 3000' x 5400' ASL. typical temps are 20C (68F). They are not short field, like an Aeronca ... mostly because they are not Aeroncas regards
  11. FWIW, some of my alum epoxied parts came adrift by accident, this made me decide that all my alum parts were put in place using a structural epoxy ... especially the nosewheel assembly to the strut - Now, I don't think that little screw does anything but conform to the plans :-) Believer in structural epoxy for alum parts. cvh
  12. Ok, so how far advanced is the book? is there still time to submit more photos?
  13. Welcome Wladimir! My advice: You should follow the tradition of building as per plans It really makes it simple and you end up with an aeroplane that does what everyone else says it does ! Now if you were building a Boeing, then I'd follow those traditions :) Happy building!
  14. And then there was another twin IIRC, designed and constructed by the feller that later did the Europa. Or so it seemed at the time ... maybe my memory is totally shot after all Losing a few Lb's may make one live longer ...
  15. What am I using to compare size? Nothing ... just pictures! :-) Saw a Defiant (or two) at Osh in 1994. But back then, I was so Cozy focussed that my memory can't recall zip. One had two V-8's IIRC ... that sound was awesome! But if you are closing the group, I'd like to be inside, please.
  16. So mine goes thru the separator and then is routed out with a pipe that blows onto the exhaust. Did not care for holes in the exhaust ...
  17. Thank you for publishing the files! Question on the strakes ... they look small compared to the Cozy! (proportion wise that is). What is the fuel capacity of the Defiant? Thanks for the interesting topic!
  18. We operate from 3000' strips here (Johannesburg SA) all the time without problem, our elevation is probably higher too ... nothing under 4500' agl, most at 5000'+agl. Good luck with the new Cozy, wishing you have as much fun as the rest of us do!
  19. Here is a picture of Alfons's installation from way back. Like Alfons remarked, never mind swinging a cat, there is no room for a mouse! I should have looked before sending my previous mail, sorry!
  20. You asked: 'What is the maximum speed one can use the rudders as airbrake' There is no maximum speed, since they have a spring in the system that prevent them from deploying when there is too much wind over them. (or should that read deploy all the way) They do add some drag and therefore will help you slow down when deployed. Note that they both deploy by the time you start braking. When you run out of elevator, the most probable cause is that your CofG is near the front (or even forward) of the loading limit. Alternatively the spring resistance is insufficient in the trim set-up. FWIW
  21. Maybe the heating is a double edged problem. If cooling from the bottom, the turbo heats the air, before pushing it thru the fins to cool the motor. In your motor, the exhausts are at the top, so downdraught cooling would reverse the problem, but in both scenarios you are moving heated air to cool the cylinders - so the direction of cooling is problematic. Is there any manner to isolate the air around the turbo and get it out the cowling, so that it does not mix with the air that is trying to cool the motor. Some pictures of your installation would help us to understand.
  22. That was some good advice! What would have to be changed to bring that motor up to, say 180 Hp, bar the pistons?
  23. you should look in the engine manuals for that info.
