  1. I received two shipments yesterday and just wanted to confirm and update some facts going on the forum(s) months ago. It's true what I previously read about ACS being able to slip under the HAZMAT radar with a single shipment of 1 gallon resin, 2 quarts hardner (F & S). ACS shipped me the stuff with some other minor things, 24 lbs. for $17.98shipping from Peachtree, GA to Detroit, MI (760 miles). Wicks shipped me the same epoxy except the resin and hardners were in separate hazmat boxes and bagged sealed inside the main box. Hazmat stickers on the outside....jeeze. 18 lbs. for $33.00 shipped from Highland, IL to Detroit, MI (525 miles). Note: Both ordered same day, both received same day, both UPS ground.
  2. I'm sorry too. Wanted deperately to make this year my first SNF. Back to work and getting life back in order now the rest of the country is catching up to us. Now it's $398.00 round trip for gas alone. Rediculous. Okay, maybe. Found airfare same price as gas. We'll have to barbecue Sat. night at Jerry & Debbie's place. ;-)
  3. Jack,I think Aiman's still in the startup stage. How about you? Seems your beast is dying for the next step.
  4. Sounds like some communication gap Mitch. It sounds like maybe you should just wait for Dave to get back in a couple weeks and try to call him. Sounds like he's not looking for a friend but simply stalling with his replies from a hotel room. Seems like he wants more info about the buyer to make a good match. Or maybe he's just cranky from too much hot food, sun, and cervesas.
  5. I must admit, I fit better in my plane when I started. It's much easier to avoid extras glass than it is to remove extra ass.
  6. Kyle, thanks for the insight on your history and I enjoyed your Flash pics. My son wants to go into your field but he's like a kid in a candy store right now not knowing what graphics, software or which college to apply. As far as your decision making on building, I suggest you speak with Dave (Beagle) Orr. I didn't buy any plane parts through him but he gave me a great deal of insight and information. He has no problem discussing things on the phone as well. I'd say when I first thought of building he gave me staight forward real life information about support, cost, timing, family interference/support, etc. He's very neutral about the topic with all the reality.
  7. You're not far from Wright-Patterson in Dayton, OH if you want to touch it. She'll take you breath away to stand under it.
  8. So, gontek, you building or flying yet?
  9. I was reading an old Sport Pilot magazine (circa late 80's) and was surprised how many alternate powerplants were being shown. There were lots of car engine conversion companies, diesels, etc. Seems like the buzz now is vaporware and electronic gadgets?
  10. The nose get glasses to the fuse with a 1 inch overlap. Actually, after glassing the fuse the recess shrinks to about 3/4". Does this seem a bit weak to anyone else? I extened the BID an inch beyond the fuse groove then added a 6 inch swath of UNI with fibers parallel to the fuse. I know, second guessing the plans but my thought is hard landing flex of the nose area may show some mico or paint cracks down the road.
  11. I had a VUE. That stuff's incredible. Avoided a road rage incident (two other guys) on ice and tagged the rear end of another car. The steel hood was curled under and the grill area puckered like someone eating lemons. I got out and popped out the grill area by hand. It went back into place. The rood needed replacing. They're making the VUE's from metal now because it's cheaper. Funny what we percieve as cheap and what is truly cheaper.
  12. I couldn't find this in the writing Wayne. Sounds interesting to read. Do you have a biography of someone's accounts?
  13. They come off when not needed Lynn. Heck, if I'm going cross country I'll lose 5-10 knots and enjoy the view for the extra room. Only wish I could put my stinky dog in one.
  14. I'm amazed as well. The life changing contrasts is what gets to me. How does one become a project engineer from being a fisherman for 22 years? I California, most expensive State to live! I live in a rust belt area of the U.S. Most of us go through life living breathing, eating, sleeping automotive. There is no living here without it. Regardless of your career here, you are affected by it. I do it, my father, grandfathers, friends, relatives, doctors, lawyers, all related. You can be a plumber here but you'll remortgage your home if the auto industry takes a dive. I'm an engineer. Never drew a single car except when I was a kid. I was in Quality, a programmer when there was only such things as DOS and no icons, tier 1 supplier development, purchasing, now a different type of engineer. The titles/jobs were/are indirectly related to the actual work. Most recent career is squeezing $$ out of my suppliers for a fair price. Funny how a few cents can become millions. Not living the dream yet myself but paying the bills and I thank God for that. Far too gray here too long. I'm ready to pound nails, plant trees, or open a DQ on the coast somewhere else any time now.
  15. Yeah, I drooled over it at OSH last year. Costs the same as a jet. The salesman let me go inside. Sho' ain't no Lear. Lots of party room! My opinion but I'm optimistic we'll see something like the Starship again. When the FAA comes around to finally accept new materials and technology for applications come up to make it economical, we'll see it I'm sure.
  16. Okay Spod, that was waaay too quick of a response with that. "He says wearing a sheepish grin". What was the thread? Where can you buy absinth and canard pontoons?
  17. I'll help spread the word Bear. Got friends who are jealous of me building because their family or so-called better half won't allow it. I understand completely. Got my Aerocanard wings that way. What about getting rid of the Musketeer and buying a (49ish%done) Cozy? Maybe she'll meet you half way with that idea?
  18. Not to stray from the subject but I had a similar problem with my landing gear axles to get those Matcos to fit. Hope its common.
  19. I was wondering about the width of the nose strut cover. I made mine a half inch wider so the edges could rest on a lip. Then I thought about how much drag these might make at takeoff. Now I'm thinking of going just the width of the strut. Anyone done any research on if the width makes any kind of difference in takeoff or landing?
  20. Since the thread is leading to far off places..... I thought the Girrls were considering a rotary as well. Including a high performance V8 at one time. Not to mention the chance of a nasty oil leak or hot lines traveling through a hot plane in the summer. I was wondering how well the oil cooler to the (insulated) heat duct would work if you had a good fan to blow it forward? I hear manifold heat sucked but maybe a better controlled source? At least you could turn it off.
  21. Looks like spilled milk. Beautiful.
  22. Whew! Dave said it best. Well done. By the way, Nat enjoys a good phone conversation about airplanes if you can catch him sitting down for a moment. On a lighter note... you can use your "Rutan approved" scrap pieces as specified in the plans. Especially all those triangle ends. Keep em' all. I've used thousands. Overlap them for BID and butting them together with parallel threads for UNI. With multiple plies put the scraps in between the plies to keep them in place.
