  1. Research = reason not to build been there, done that for over a year, talked to variouse suppliers, got samples of carbon fiber, kevlar, diferent core materials, etc., etc Then read a book on composite construction, explaining all of the properties and materials, wisper foam, boron, eglass, then realized. new materials = reengineering enjoy the build dust
  2. Personal preference, with out an open mind, oil system is sacred and will not be touched, not one extra fiting allowed enjoy the build dust
  3. It's not the "giving" it is the system. the bulkheads are structural, even the seat back and the instrument panel, they transfer loads to and from the fuse sides, stiffen the bulkheads and you may have to stifen the fuse sides. Kevlar is not like eglass. eglass has about the same strength in compression as tension, kevlar does not. it is strong in one or the other, i forget which, and NOT the other. The other problem with kevlar is it's workability, it just doesn't. Special cutting tools to cut it and it doesn't sand, it balls up, i hear it is a real pain in the arse to deal with. Now if you are planning to fly over south america or africa where they test thier guns out on GA planes, then maybe try using the balistic kevlar to build the plane out of. enjoy the prebuild Dust
  4. Elec seats, mmmmmm, they are needed here in mi if you have leather seats. Just to put this conversation into perspective, OAT = -30 F Wife = better be warm enjoy the build Dust
  5. Ok, so here are my choices heat muff with air by naca or by blower liquid with radiators eithor part of oil cooling system or independent hot air from turbo system electric clothes Thats the whole list isn't it? enjoy the build, don't modify:confused: Dust
  6. Mike Slave and new builder, furom Drew slave and new builder, forum dust thane dave Had a great night and day at plane day, drew drove in friday night, takled cozy til 3 am, didn't waye up for thane and he had to wait, first time that hapenned, he he he split up into three groups group 1 dave, lonly making metal parts group 2 Thane and mike leveled fus #2 and installed spar and then helped with layups group 3 dust and drew played squeeze the foam, it appears we don't have enough for fuel tanks ribs on plane # 2. glued bits and pieces together and accumulated enough for all ribs for tank 1 and some for tank 2, even though some are 5 minuited scrapes, they will work just fine. Drew is now an expert in filling pores with thin micro, five minuiting together 3/8 foam and doing a "wet" layup, as all of them that we do on the inside of the tank are purposefully left wet, to prevent leaks. Drew, do i make enough dust to be called that? On reviewing the progress we made i think the five of us achieved the work of 4.8 people, and I was the slacker!!! enjoy the build Dust
  7. As far as i know, the heat muff, if clamped on is fine, the welded on om had a problem enjou the build Dust
  8. Make a bunch of short extensions, you won't regret it enjoy the build dust
  9. hang the plugs from the ceiling, much better than anywhere eles enjoy the build Dust
  10. OK, i use only slooooow hardener. precut all glass and mark layout lines on sides. mix 10 squirts of thin micro dump thin micro all over and then squeege in so that none remains on surface, brush into curved areas. keep mixing batches of 10 until it looks like you won't need 10 and then do less carefully place first layer of glass down and straighten fibers, use short movements, move the glass with 2 hands 1/2 inch or so at a time. With all slow hardener you have LOTS of time mix batch of 8 or 10 pumps, dump all over glass and promptly move all around with scqeegee brush very lightly areas that you missed and curves around longerons. Stiple the glass in at the curves and bends. When all is wet, no longer white, or a little over wet, glass wets out easier from beneath, carefully lay on and straighten out next layer. Don't forget to have all layers ready to go before you start. As you place this layer down it will start to wet itself out from the extra epoxy from below. Dump more epoxy where needed and quickly move it around with a squeege, brush non flat areas. With all slow hardener you have allot of time. When i brush the epoxy on i don't keep going until it is done, just keep going to new areas and when you get back to the area you brushed a minuites ago, it will have wet itself out already. use medium preasure on squeegee and lift up midway for a line, if you pick up and there is a line then too much epoxy. when i peel ply that layer will take out epoxy, but it is possible to remove too much, i make it soo the peel ply has a little sheen on it so that it is clear that it is wet, just a sheen, then follow sladers plastic peel ply instructions enjoy the build Dust
  11. The views is definatly not adding the views correctly enjoy the build dust
  12. No i'm not explaining it well. 1x 10's won't work for the table i described. To creat the torsion box you nail the 3/4 plywood to the frame work and it is hard enough to hit the 2x6's let alone the 1x's the wax is great, just keep the table waxed and all slopings come right up with a putty knife, it is not hard to wax table and polish all of the wax off. We were told to use wax paper, which i later switched to "wax butcher wrap" which is actually plastic. The torsion box with 3/4 plwood on BOTH sides is great!!! at to size, if you can fit the 12', do it if not go to 8 + 4 and use long threaded rod to connect, once you have the torsion box you can't get to the inside if my official photagrapher would post the pictures of the strake(do you hear this slave, ya know it is hard to get good slaves anymore), then i would ask for pictures of the torsion box. enjoy the build Dust
  13. I have the west system pumps and they wear out, for me they last a gallon or two. On another point, if you want to vary the fast to slow hardener, for diferent pot life and cure times, it may be allot easier to use the scale method. enjoy the build
  14. My way is the only way and it is best I just gave terribly slanted advice on the use of a pump and i gave it over the phone so no one could correct me! I use an epoxy ratio pump and i love it, but, many use and love thier scales, weighing each batch, effeciently and quickly. Soooooo could someone here give thier advice and experience on using a scale for measurment. Thought there was a thread, but, i couldn't find it enjoy the build Dust
  15. YES, If you don't have one start digging now enjoy the build dust
  16. Ok i would have made it the way i made my woodworking bench and the strake table 42" x 12' framework of 2 x 6 buy them straight and use them FAST before they turn into pretzels, i mean within an hour or two 2 12 ' 7 39" cut all to length very very square 3 sheets 3/4 inch plywood sanded one side cut to 42inch at lumber yard 42" x 8, 42" x 4, 42" x8,42" x 4, clamp and nail the 2x6's together in a box/ladder arrangement the clamps are needed to get it together tight 2x6 accross every 2' and at each end nail 42x8' and 42x4' on one side Flip and do the same but switch long and short side shim flat while you are nailing the plywood down cover one side with hard board and small finish nail it on so that later you can rip it off, this is a wear board, if you can find one 12 feet long so that you do not need a seam even better set this on legs, it is very very very strong, it is a torsion box and it will not move or bend my strake one 4'x5' is with an 1/8 of flat over 5' and solid as the day is long. Wax with johnsons paste wax weekly, no silicones enjoy the build dust
  17. If memory serves me right, one of the largest and most active posts ever enjoy the build Dust
  18. I can comment on west, i use it for woodworking ONLY because i don't want to buy another ratio pump. don't use it, it is smelly and you can't get the real looooong pot life out of it that you can with mgs the ability to change pot life by changing the hardener in your pump is really great for slader up in our shop we really like using the really long pot life, never have exotherm, can take a pop break during long layups enjoy the build Dust
  19. John and i are the most active posters and we are oposits John_______________________ Dust read everything____________ read just the sentence work every day_____________one day a week rotary______________________continental alone______________________a party enjoy the build_____________enjoy the build of course my way is the best oh wait, the last one is the same enjoy the build Dust
  20. an answer I have thought long and hard, i really like to be considerred GOD, not john and I have been the most active posters for a long time, i have read almost everything ever written on this forum. when i did my dustpicks thing, i went to the coffee house, well first i went to the chapter specific area to flag a post for cbarber that i knew was there and it is a REALLY IMPORTANT POST because it will save ALLOT OF TIME FOR ALL. i sorted the posts by descending date order, went into each one, read enough to remember the thread and then iethor go to next one or flag. it took more than 30 seconds each pick because only once was i zapped by the 30 second posting limit My method was flagging allot of posts as i tried to be liberal and not be accused of , wellllllllllll, you know, not be accused. It would work with a search quite nicely, it wasn't meant as required reading, just to make searches easier. Well, ok maybe required reading for those of you not building your hot boxes and work tables, he he he One reason i deleted my name, is so that in the future when i do something like this, i am not thought of as __________, just that dusty guy, and don't worry, i don't introduce myself as dust on a daily basis, only at oshkosh when i am looking at someone's finished plane and i meet other builders. BTW, one of those builders emailed me the other day, out of the blue, that he was still building, made my day. Lets get New builders building Stopped builders started building again All builders to complete enjoy the build Dust
  21. Ok white is the coolest and black is the hotest and epoxy is thermoplastic, that is, it goes soft when heated. On areas out of sunlight you are pretty safe the areas that recieve sunlight get the hotest. Also epoxy keeps curing as it gets hotter. These are it's basic charistics heated to 100 safe to temps of 140 heated to 120 safe to temps of 160 heated to 140 safe to temps of 180 the heating can take place years apart and the temps i used are generalized, check with each mfg thier are temperature colors charts and I swear, they all refer to a hot day in MICHIGAN as to what max temperature a colored surface will atain in the sunlight you don't have to use white, you can use linen eggshell WhiteSmoke ivory snow antiquewhite Actually you can do allot, but be careful, your gonna look at this paint job for 30 years enjoy the build Mike Hey CBARBER could you write us a disclaimer that we could add to the bottom of all posts explaining that this stuff is our memory or whatever, i think a thousand words should do it
  22. hey joe, did you build your heat box for the epoxy yet, he he he enjoy the build Dust

    ruckus

Mr. administrator, why not post the PM's you sent me so that all can see why i appear to be so frustrated and angered. Forum, Sorry for seeming to cause the ruckus, but when you read what the administrator said to me, you will understand. He ruffled my feathers, and if he was not the administrator, who cares, but he is and i would suppose he has the ear of the forum owner and what he said is going to happen. enjoy the build be part of the 20% dust

    SMA Diesel

I believe it is 80 or 90 thousand dollars US and the prop had to be beefed up an extra 50 pounds because of the power pulses of the four stroke diesel, thats down from 70 pounds. It is aimed strictly at the euopean market where they tax the living daylights out of aviation gas enjoy the build Dust
