  1. I know what I would like to see, but this might be only of interest to first stage builders.: Weight and balance/CG/Center of lift: Issues presented by fuselage length or engine(weight) modifications.
  2. My guess (based on my own personal experience) is that it's either boiling down to a simpler issue or two. Money, or time. Time spent on the project is time potentially not spent with your partner. Try to include her more in the things that you do, get her 'pumped up' about it. After all, when it's finished, you two will get plenty of time right next to one another in that front seat! The build process could easily be tailored to be more compatible with her schedule, or to bring her in for some help occasionally. Also, make sure to spend extra time with her when you aren't working on the project. Money, this is a harder one to fix, and unfortunately is the root cause of many couples decisions to split. I'm assuming (there I go again) that you have a bit of dispoable income available if you are committing to a project of this magnitude. She could be having doubts about your finances, or commitment to the more important needs in your life. Some questions to ask yourself: Are your savings suffecient to sustain you in case either one (or both god forbid) of you loses your primary income? Have you bought a home yet? etc. I can't really offer up much of a solution for this one, other than to try to allay her doubts about your finances, and make sure that she is part of the approval process when you make purchases regarding the project. I guess you can just ask yourself. What are your priorities. Obviously (hopefully) the wife will come first. However, what happens in a worst case scenario, and this was just a taste of things to come? There are other possibilities to explain the sudden change of heart, but they are beyond the scope of civil discussion in this forum. Hope this helps.
  3. I've been inside some fairly complex engines, and I can tell you, the masic mechanics are all the same. Be sure that you have all the tools called for in the manual, don't try to 'rig' anything. ex: ring compressors, tools to split the boxer block, etc. Boxer/horizontally opposed blocks are a tiny bit more comples than standard piston over crank engines, since you have to remove pistons before you can split open the block.
  4. Count me in, officially. I guess since this is post #116 in the thread, that's my 'license' number.

    Again?

This was my suspicion, I just wanted to confirm them. Now to compare them against the LongEz on teh terfs...

    Again?

If the pdf's are exportable, I just want to export them to a textfile so I can run a 'diff' on them vs terf. That should seriously slim down the file size, as I have no interest in them for a building purpose. Educational purpose obviously. I want to see how much similarity there is between the plans, to see how strictly licensing or copyright was adhered to by the folks who release plans.

    Again?

I wanted to get a copy of the previously openly released aerocanard plans (waiter had a link to it from his site). I'd like to compare them to my CozyIV and LongEz/CP updates combo that are on my TERF cd to see what differences there are. Yes I know the aerocanard is a cozy derivative.

    Again?

I went hunting around for the canard wiki (off the canardaviation site) to grab a file off of it that I need, and it seems to be gone. Incedentally, so is thecanardust forum. What the heck! This is really starting to irritate me.
  9. Were you wearing big clunky shoes? You might want to try out a pair of driving shoes for flying. OH so nice for long trips with your heels resting on the floor, they have cupped heels, and they are form fitting to your feet which will give you more room in the limited space down on the floor. The one company even has a wicked name... http://www.piloti.com/ I personally wear the 'race performance' Monaco's or DTM's and I can attest to their incredible quality. Additionally, they are Nomex (fireproofing) lined.
  10. Not sure where the aeroelectric connection loose leaf "book" is located, but I downloaded the cd rom from his site. thats 300+mb, and while in the public domain (by his encouragement) including it in the OpenEZ plans might make them a little too large to download. Did I miss something on his site? EDIT: oops, found it. Yes, we could include a link to the 'buy it now' page or something like that. The intro is freely available though Not sure what the FAA's stance on redistributing materials is. Same with the EAA. They both have excellent, relevant technical resources available to builders.
  11. If all else fails, you have a wicked display you could glass in for.. erm... in flight passenger entertainment? EDIT: Look for anything with a "HI-Brite" label or something of the sort. A quick search through their site found this little 1000nit gem: http://store.earthlcd.com/SK_3024?sc=7&category=234

    Rutan videos

I have the same one. Great instrauctional video, not the best quality. I wish we could get Burt to do a remake using modern equipment!
  13. Oh, you dont want the touchscreen edition for a production HUD. I imagine it would be a little bit hard to reach. Even for a mock up, it would be oodles cheaper to just get the standard one. I couldn't see using that display for much else as it's only one color.
  14. I just ran across another few documents that I think would be very important for inclusion: http://www.aeroelectric.com/articles/Getting_Started.pdf The aeroelectric connection's "Getting Started" guide. Also we might want to include a link to something like: http://www.bd5.com/bd01002.htm - Chuck berthe's "Flight testing of homebuilt aircraft" Or a link to Vaughan Askue's book: http://www.actechbooks.com/flight_testing_homebuilt_aircraft.htm Thoughts, ideas, etc? I'm sure that we could split the files into OpenEZ specific files (drawings, etc) and other "supplemental" files that would be of benefit to anyone building or flying a canard. Importantly: In order to protect intellectual property rights, we should include LINKS to commercial resources in a links file, while actually providing the relevant 'public domain' resources/documents/etc in their entirety.
  15. Sr. Systems Administrator. I work with both Windows (AD, IIS, Exchange, etc) and Linux (Apache, Postfix, MySQL, PHP, etc). I'm also a Virtualization specialist in Xen, and I'm coming up to speed on the intricacies of VMWare Server. Also do a little bit of computer security, but, realistically speaking, what Admin doesn't. I work typically in large datacenter or enterprise environments (100+ users). I'm actually looking for a job right now, so, if anyone has any leads.. please throw me a bone.
  16. How odd, I am working on plans for a killer fuselage rotisserie, counterbalanced, variable height and everything. I figure being able to flip the fuse while doing the interior finishing, landing gear some of the bottom layups, and avionics install will make it worth the effort. Just have to have a little welding skill when I get the drawings done and online, and access to a couple of small I beams. Everything should be available at Home De-port or Lowes.
  17. GAH. I knew the evil empire would do something stupid like that. I used to work for an email company, so I know exactly what you mean. I was just trying to figure out who's holding it up. I've actually seen some pretty ugly delays on outbound SMTP Queues. I really need to get my personal server back online, thats the long and short of it.
  18. Quick question.. how fast do notification emails get sent out when people reply to your 'subscribed' threads? It seems that google (gmail) has been on a consistant 30min-1hr delay in getting those emails to me, and I am trying to figure out if the evil empire is delaying my email, or if email is slow getting out of this site. Honestly, I dont see a php mail() interface being that much delayed, based on how quickly vBulletin responds. Any ideas? I'm about ready to stick my foot up google's azz because I am on a job search, and darnit, every minute counts! Back when I was running Zimbra on my own dedicated box, my emails would show up in literally seconds.
  19. I'm a night owl kinda guy. In my line of work, I'm occasionally on a night shift or night on-call rotation. I'll say that I do my best work in the dark. Go figure.. I work with computers... Sr. Sysadmin (Windows/Linux). But yes, thats basically exactly what I'm going for: Have the plans and most important (common?) publically available documents and links to most important sites 'all inclusive' in the one file that the 'Open-EZ project' provides, then pointers/links to stuff that costs $. You are an american expat in the land down under? I -REALLY- would like to talk to you about that sometime, if you wouldn't mind.
  20. Hopefully I wasn't misunderstood. I in no way want the plans or other documents from the terf cd included, all the things I listed were freely available on the web for download. I already got my TERF CDs, but I wanted to see what other 'open source' stuff people wanted to include on the zip download.
  21. I have been thinking (which isn't necessarily a good thing) but I have started to collect some files that are available on the web that I consider 'must haves' as additional info on the project. I was wondering what you all thought of including them as part of the openEZ drawings zip file. Also, if you have anything you think should be included, feel free to chime in. Of course, if we include any files, we should give credit where it is due. Or, if people are not comfortable actually including these files in the drawings zip file, we could include a 'links to important files' text document or something. In no specific order, here is my list... Oshkosh 2007 presentation by Terry Schubert and Gary Hertzler on engine cooling & drag redux. (available on EZSquadron) Canard Pusher 1-82 sections (also at EZSquadron, and TERF cd) Aircraft Spruce PDF catalog "Most important canard links" document file. Any other ideas?
  22. Folks, try to stay away from MEK/P whenever possible. Check the MSDS on it. The stuff is a toxic waste dump in a metal can. Causes cancer QUICK.
  23. Edge, The thread originally wasn't about scraps. I just wanted to see if I could just save a tiny bit of effort by ordering cozy chapter/section materials from spruce or wicks for building my OpenEZ. Then it morphed into... scraps, other fiberglass sources, cabin heat, formerly respected members of the canard community etc. PS: I'm not stuffing a Lycosaurus in the back of my plane, so I want to explore other heating alternatives. It will most likely be a Subaru conversion. I'm still not comfortable about the EGT issues with turbocharged rotaries to want to use one. I have plenty of 'streetracer' buddies who have turbo'ed RX-7's who are having almost endless issues. And these guys are tuning their cars on chassis dynamometers, with experienced rotary tuners. I'm sure i'll earn the wrath of the cozygirrrls for those comments.. but.. It will be me and my 'family' in back... so... I want to be 100% confident with what keeps the plane from gliding to a crash site.
  24. I checked out his writeup about the install and oil heat system (which I figure you are referring to). I think its an awesome idea. I only have one concern, which he actually commented on in the writeup about his own install. Running oil lines up to the front will cause you to keep about a quart of oil in the system at every oil change. I would prefer if there were some way to get all the oil out of the system 100%, every time. I am thinking of doing something along the same line, except with coolant. You can run a smaller diameter insulated hardline up front, use a smaller, purpose designed 'heater core' and possibly get the same results. Actually, with coolant, since it is so flexible to work with (less viscosity than oil, so pumping it all over the airplane isn't as big a deal) you could theoretically have separate heating units for the PIC and RIO (back seat pass).
  25. Wow.. I would have never believed it if I hadn't seen the videos for myself. VERY cool, and runs on Jet-A. You can get that at most larger GA airports!
