  1. Shazam had no idea.. if I was to have a guess at it from what (little) I know of music, I would say that it sounds like a composition by Yanni.
  2. do you have a link to the video? I can try running it through Shazam (music recognition softare)
  3. A pee tube? Seriously? Time to do more research. Then again, I have a bladder like a camel. edit: Oh man.. why did I google this. http://soaringweb.org/ART/pee.html
  4. I recall reading somewhere that deep stalls are possible (however unlikely) to recover in these aircraft... something about trying to 'throw' the aircraft over using combined rudder and aileron inputs. I could be wrong though. The lesson from all this is: Pay CLOSE attention to your CG limits, stay within them, and fly inside your tested 'flight test' envelope.
  5. I was one of the folks stuck in Chicago's Union Station for over 22 hours. In the cold (literally). In the dark (figuratively). And fairly discontent. Amtrak REALLY dropped the ball on this one. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5ifTg_yfYpAykFLdY6fVBnb3NeMZAD958N4DO0
  6. It's unlikely that I will make the plans available again in their entirety. Trust me, I wasn't even CLOSE to done with them. I may make certain parts of them available (cover page design which was completely my work, the license agreement, and a select few other pages). Actually, I completely disagree. Choosing to release something into the public domain (giving up your rights to it) is completely different than retaining your rights to something and not choosing to enforce them. Again, I want to stress that I think that this should be a full rewrite. For twofold reasons: 1. To respect Burts rights as the author of the original plans, we must make something substantially different. 2. In the VERY remote case that he has a change of heart and decides to start enforcing his rights, we would all be on the hook for violations. In order for this project to have maximum value, we must not be viewed as, or accused of being thieves or copyright violators. That being said: Let's move FORWARD!
  7. 1. Marc, I can't thank you enough for getting to the bottom of this for us. It certainly helps to clarify the path which lies ahead. 2. I am utterly stunned about the TERF CD's. There will be some VERY hard questions for the owner of that company from this community. I do not envy him. 3. I without question will trust Marc's word over TERF's, as he has never given me a reason to doubt him. Period. Unless they produce a signed, legally binding contract giving them authorization to redistribute the plans, I have no reason to believe them. 4. Since BURT is the holder of copy/distribution rights, I will honor those, and continue on with this project as a full rewrite. I'm truly sick (Influenza), and exhausted, otherwise I would write more. Still... absolutely stunned. I have no words
  8. Domain name is already set. I need to have a talk with Jon M and the other people heavily involved in the project to see how they want to handle ownership of the domain, etc. I would be glad to donate it to the project somehow, but I guess the site has to be owned by an entity (a person or legal entity, llc, corporation, etc). Other issues that need to be figured out are liability/licensing, etc. How do we move forward with the project, in essence, giving our work to the community, but preventing liability issues...
  9. I have the Wiki set up, but the domain name registration hasn't gone through yet. I am also in the process of setting up the project management portal as well. If you want a preview of the Wiki or Project Management system, please send me a private message, and I will send you the testing URLs. I have not enabled security on it yet, so It's not quite ready for public exposure.
  10. I agree, I feel that the chapters should be kept in the same order, and leave it to the builder to decide if they want to deviate from the plans order. The reason we would want to keep the chapters the same is that any updates or safety/airworthiness advisories will specifically reference chapters in the original Long/Cozy, etc. If someone can provide compelling reason to drastically deviate from the original order, then I'm for it. The website you mentioned appears to be 'parked' at godaddy, which means someone already owns it, and we can't use it.
  11. Not exactly... http://www.dscinet.com/eZ80/OpenEZ/ Thats more what I am concerned about. Been around since 2002, last update copyright 2002-2005.
  12. Bruce, I am in the process of setting up both the wiki and project roadmap (we'll be using a web based, open source project management system called 'dotproject' and of course the MediaWiki). I'm not really sure that I am the right person to lead/direct the project in the interim, but I will gladly take responsibility for getting the first few pieces together: Domain Name & Hosting Website Wiki & Setup Project Planning system anything else that needs to get done. I'm still a bit concerned about the name though. . .
  13. Yeah.. amazing. The use of CAD drawings throughout the plans rewite would be a very easy way to modernize them. EXACTLY! Not necessarily. I personally own a copy of the TERF CD's. I am sure anyone else who is seriously considering a build (or contributing significantly to this project) also has purchased them, or is planning to. I may or may not agree.. I'm not sure if 'best practices' have changed much with working with glass over the years, more experienced builders could probably answer that. Resin systems have changed dramatically, thats for sure. And maybe we can add new methods such as Randi and Chrissy's 'lo-vac' bagging technique to lighten up parts. In addition, there are some things that I would love to see addressed in the new plans. For example, a more robust rollover protection system in case of off-field landings.
  14. Nobody to my knowledge has contacted TERF. The reason we are going to probably have to start over is that it is actually not possible to scrape the text from the PDF's on the TERF CD. In order to have the ability to text scrape, the PDF had to have been created with a modern computer word processing program (MS Word for example) and then "printed to PDF." The TERF CD files are PDF's of a scanned image, and therefore the text must be run through an OCR program to get the text out. When I was using OmniPage Pro 16 to do it, I was getting significantly less than 70% accuracy. Remember, the original plans had a lot of handwritten notes/corrections, splotches on the page, etc. OCR cannot handle that effectively. However! I feel that there is an alternative, that will let many people cooperate on the project together. MediaWiki. It would be possible to put together a chapter based plans rewrite with multimedia elements and have it all available online. It would give us the ability to have version control, complete transparency, and give the ability for a community selected member to 'lead' the project, as it were. So, I guess that I took Marc's concerns to heart, as I'm still a little concerned about stepping on these guys. They have been around a lot longer than us: http://www.dscinet.com/eZ80/OpenEZ/ The copyright on their page shows 2002, updated as recently as 2005. OpenCanard 2, perhaps? (2 for "two place")
  15. I think we need to get together the 'leaders' in the community, and those who have a substantial interest in seeing the project continue, and possibly plan out a roadmap for the project, and come to an agreement on how we can proceed without violating any rights retained by the original designers or those now licensed to distribute it. Call it the 'OpenEZ Summit' if you will. We have a tremendous opportunity to do something in the aviation world that has not really been done before. I'm willing to donate any resources (unlimited webhosting being one thing) that I have available to the project. After speaking with Bruce from this forum, he suggested that we do a chapter-wiki rewrite of the manual. Using a system like MediaWiki will enable the project to track changes, add photos, new drawings, multimedia objects, etc to the plans. I can get the base wiki easily set up in a matter of minutes. The community can contribute images, videos, car drawings, plans updates, etc. Speaking of OpenEZ... there is already an open source project with that name. It's an open source operating system for the eZ80 family of microprocessors..
  16. Marc, here is where I think the benefit would be: With re-factored, modern plans, there is a possibility that it would renew interest in the design, bringing more people into the builder community. Having a 'one shot' download of all the (updated) plans, drawings, POH, etc could possibly renew interest in the design, especially with EXCELLENT builder/materials resources such as Eureka, CozyGirrrls, etc out there. Even if people want to download the plans to 'kick the tires' as it were, to see if they even want to build at all.. that's better than nothing. I personally feel that there could be a resurgence in the type. I remember being told at one meeting that my new EAA Chapter was the 'composite king' and had the most composite aircraft (either finished or under construction) many years back. Now, I think there are maybe 3 composite aircraft left here. One of which is an old LongEZ in a hangar gathering dust. Shame, really. My intentions are pure, always were.
  17. Thats basically what I was trying to do, with the addition of: -Updated parts/epoxy/etc requirements -Fully OCR'd and very clear text -New, color photos
  18. The purpose of this was to bring the plans up to date. Why do you refuse to comprehend that? CP Newsletter updates, new build images (which are nigh unrecognizable in the, oh wait, PDF's that are provided on the TERF CD's.) Life is not without its strange coincidences sometimes. You really are wasting time on nitpicking. If you devoted half the energy you expend to ripping peoples thoughts apart to actually coming forth with a solution for all this, we'd be in a much better place.
  19. I think that all of these are excellent ideas. THe only issue is that producing a DVD would take years, and most builders choose to modify the plans in some way or another. We could do it by chapter, however, with various builders. Heck, I'll even host high definition videos for free, as I have an account with LimeLight Networks, a very significant provider in the content distribution network space.A full rewrite of the manual is another option, we could even include multimedia elements as part of a builders DVD. Working with TERF was always an idea that I was also open to. I doubt that they could afford my services, were I to take this on as a full time project. Working on it in my spare time, alone, isn't going to get this done anytime in the near future. My intent wasn't to piss anyone off at all. I could demonstrate and rewrite his first post in a way that would have expressed the same sense of urgency and objection in a more respectful and civil manner. Keep in mind that I replied in kind, only. If he'd like to bury this and continue on to a more civil discussion as to what alternatives there are for keeping this alive, I'm perfectly willing to move forward.. Remember, RAF is (basically) gone. TERF has the rights to the manuals, but, in this financial climate, what happens if they do not survive? What other alternatives are there? TERF could release this into the public domain as well, if they wished, or grant the OpenEZ project the right to update the builders manual, etc. There are a LOT of options here. Let's bring them all to the table and figure this out. I had/have NO intent to profit from this venture in any way. I just wanted to help move this project into the 21st century. Consider it stifled. Now that this is all settled, get back to building your airplane.
  20. I couldn't find one either doing a quick search through my own posts on this forum, but my memory is better than average, and I recall discussing this subject with you at some time. It may not have been on a web forum or email list. Most people, myself included, rarely recognize when they are being rude, especially online. I'll admit, I went over the top of you in one of my posts, but I needed to make a point. Keep in mind, I would say any of this stuff directly to your face as well. I didn't mention this in my original post, but I might have been willing to sell (or if i was really feeling generous, giving back) my work to TERF so that they could include the updated, neatly PDF'd documents on another revision of their CD's. In fact, I was -seriously- considering that. Even if they didn't want to re-master their CD-ROM, they could have put in a simple paper insert or emailed update directing you to a download site where you could get the file if you wanted. Isn't technology wonderful like that? As for your tone, again, I recognize, and am extremely grateful for your vast contributions to the aviation community, and that you have Burt Rutan's ear (I wish I could have that). However, it does not give you carte blanche to speak to people any way you choose. Your contributions to the community will be clouded by your behaviour (in fact, based on the multiple emails of thanks that I got for going toe-to-toe with you, I'd say that has already happened.). Yeah, my old website which was listed in my personal information here... unfortunately the .net domain lapsed, and some cybersquatter decided to purchase the name out from under me. The new and updated site is at .com. If you carefully looked at the URL in my original post in this thread, you would have noticed that. I'm surprised you didn't see that glaring difference, being as observant as you purport yourself to be (remember my comment way back about selective illiteracy?). As for what files you may or may not have downloaded... there are things called webserver logs (located on my own server at /var/log/httpd/access.log) that can without question tell me exactly what was accessed on my server and by whom. Unfortunately, doing that would expose your IP address to the world, violating your privacy, so, I'll keep those to myself. Do you really expect the intelligent people on this forum to believe that you didn't click the link in my original post? Your would never have replied to this thread with such conviction had you not have seen the PDF file. In case you missed it, by some intergalactic miracle, here it is again (obviously this link doesn't work now):
  21. I'll respond to your questions at approximately the same time (most likely a few minutes after) you acknowledge that I acquiesced immediately to your request to put my project on ice.
  22. -sigh- Your rude request along with veiled threats of legal action: Me, saying 'ok, i concede, and will cease working on this project immediately': Which I made in my second post in this thread, no arguments! This next part is highlighted to make sure you don't miss it. In your following post you don't even acknowledge that I accepted your request to cease, and instead you chose to nit-pick apart every OTHER thing that I said. Being a senior engineering level person in my career (as I believe you are), I realize how easy it is to simply pick to pieces almost anything anyone says or does. Let's call it a 'disadvantage' of being an intelligent and well educated human being.. However, I also have the maturity to recognize when someone concedes defeat, and to let the issue drop. Those are the actions of a mature, well educated, and classy adult. Now.. let me step off my mature/intelligent/classy soapbox and speak on a level that you might understand: Based on the above statements of fact, I can with absolute certainty say that you are a condescending, selectively illiterate azzhole who doesn't deserve to have the things that you do, or your status in life and work. I don't care if you have a hotline to the most expensive hooker on earth, that doesn't give you the right to talk to people the way that you do. Make your points, but show some respect to the people you talk to. Remember, you have NO idea who I am, or of what I am capable. I do know this though: Someone needs to put your ass in check. Quickly. Gentle readers: I realize that I came over the top of MZ a bit hard, however, I just don't think my points were getting across to him the 'kind and gentle' way. My sincere apologies to you all.
  23. shocking. I'm truly stunned. I recall making a post about this a while ago and having nothing but support from people here, yourself included. I didnt even get into the embedded multimedia, completely re-doing the images/drawings, etc. Moot point now I guess. Ok, done. Project ended. Files removed. Ciao. fyi, your tone was excessively rude as well. And, I'll thank you to throw away any files you may have downloaded from my private website. We'll call it even.
  24. Hey everyone, I know that I have been MIA for some time, as my life has taken some very interesting turns. I now live in Texas (yay year round build weather!) and work for a major hosting company. I haven't had the time to move forward as fast as I would have liked on the build plans re-work. So, here I am to give you an update, and to ask for your help. I don't think that I will be able to fully re-factor the plans by myself, it is just too large of a project. Here is where I am at (a PDF output of the file that I am working on): http://www.aimana.com/openez/OpenEZ.pdf Here is what I need help with: -Moving forward with the OCR conversion. -Images & Pictures need to be redone -Importantly, the CP Newsletter changes all need to be added in to the new plans. -Most importantly: Bill of parts & Materials needs to be COMPLETELY re-factored. Here is what you need: ScanSoft OmniPage 16 (I have 5 licensed copies, 4 that are unused, if you are serious about helping out with the OCR, I will give you one of my copies and walk you through using it) Microsoft Word 2003 or newer
