  1. I'll take the darn near transatlantic range with ferry tank, thank you very much. If i want to go ballistic.. I'll go talk to the guys over at mythbusters. I'll have them strap me to a rocket or something.
  2. DUDE! Those LED's were awesome. So is the controller circuitry that you built. I really hope that you get something like that to market. I would definately go for it. As for wig-wag.. you definately can't do it with a Xenon-Arc/HID system. You will shorten the life of the bulbs, and possibly the ballast incredibly. I will be at RR08, hopefully we can get all the electronics guys together and see if we can brainstorm some ideas and whatnot. We can do it here online as well.
  3. So, I have been thinking about packing up shop and moving somewhere... ANYWHERE other than this rotten cesspool called upstate New York. One of my (odd) criteria is access to a quality GA airport, and the possibility of renting hangar space (or a whole hanger even) Some of the towns that I have looked at are: KENV - Wendover, UT KTSP - Tehachapi, CA KMHV - Mojave, CA My line of work permits me to telecommute, and I travel a little as well. Anyone have any suggestions? I would like to move SXSW (south by southwest) from where I am currently. I am sick of this sh*tty weather and peoples even sh*ttier attitudes
  4. If you were at RR07, you couldn't have missed my demonstration of the power of HID lighting systems.. My Mcullough/ACRO HID 5" handheld spotlight illuminated the ENTIRE length of the Rough River runway. Brightly. I'm thinking of slapping TWO of those on my finished aircraft. Probably to the chagrin of my local tower...
  5. I can apply the text updates that I have from the OCR/PDF CP newsletters, but after reading through them, it seems that some of them come with (and reference) illustrations that I do not have... If you want me to build a Wiki/Portal Website, I can bang together something on my server here at home in about 20 minutes...
  6. What is the range on that beast (on standard tanks, not the additional ferry ones) ?
  7. I like this idea, nice bright screen. just need more contrast and reverse the lettering: http://www.thedukes.org/rv/lcd.html
  8. I think you have missed about 5 years of drama. After dust et. al. split away from this forum to go 'start their own' several years back... they SPLIT THAT FORUM UP AGAIN (in 2007). Many, MANY members who jumped ship back then have come back here, and many people who joined the new forum have come back here, and vowed never to return to a forum run by those other guys. Not to disparage anyone else.. but really.. bailing on your community twice? I don't think so. EDIT: I am basing my opinions on my OBSERVED actions of others, Dust, Slade, Jon M, etc, etc. Not words.
  9. I downloaded the reformatted C.P. 1-82 PDF document from cozybuilders.org, and am going through them. I am trying to figure out why we don't just combine the relevant CP updates into the build manual? It seems like it would be trivial to OCR the typewriter-produced original build manual, then insert the reformatted updates and drawings into the Open-EZ build documents, then add the Roncz and long rudder (or other) plans. It's actually a project that I could take on myself, as my box absolutely rips at OCR, and properly cuts out the images. I will look into it when I get my TERF disc ordered. Then we could release it as either a .odf (open document) or cleaned up, single PDF. Anyone have any objections or see any barriers to doing this, then releasing it as our own 'Open-EZ builders guide' ? ex. Would it be considered a copyright violation if we did extensive re-edits of the documentation? I'm envisioning a 'one click' download of the plans drawings & builders guide for future builders, along with an OpenEz per-chapter Wiki, perhaps at a dedicated openez site. The Wiki 'framework' I could have done in an afternoon, as I work with that type of stuff on a daily basis... EDIT: In fact... here is a summary of the safety related changes to the Long-EZ that were included in the CP newsletters: http://www.cozybuilders.org/ref_info/Canard_Pusher/LongEZ_Plans_ChangesUpdate.htm Very valuable summary.
  10. Why the findmespot instead of an AF/ELT or an AP/ELT ? A_/ELT's are specifically designed to be used in aircraft, and can be triggered automatically in the event of a high G-Force impact. I would use a findmespot but, it would need to be booted up, acquire and track satellites, and then see the sky to transmit its position information to the satellite. In the (god forbid) event of an incident where you were knocked out by the impact of an aircraft falling out of the sky, something like this would be of little to no use. Hey.. if Les Stroud (Survivorman) has one.. you can be DAMN sure that I will be getting one of these for my collection of camping gear, but I'd be wary of using it in my aircraft.
  11. Mil spec dye pack, the only one to get IMO. These are the ones that I carry on my boat. http://www.landfallnavigation.com/-sfdye.html
  12. Hella lighting puts out some very nice projector style (and freeform reflector) High Intensity Discharge lights. The low beam would be appropriate for ground ops/taxiing, and the high beam system would be an appropriate landing light. These lights are extremely compact, and bright beyond belief. http://www.rallylights.com/hella/90mm_modules.asp#90mmHIDXenon I know for sure that they are available elsewhere (much) more cheaply, if you search around on the internet, there are knock offs, etc. However, if you have access to a wrecked audi/bmw/caddillac/other luxury vehicle, they ALL use the Hella D2S assembly, you just have to extract it (and the ballast) from the headlamp housing. beware installing these lamps in an area where fuel vapors may collect, as they sometimes generate arcing while in the 5 second ignition cycle.
  13. I am thinking reentry would be a real *****.
  14. I just checked out their site, and I will be ordering their cores the day he takes the orders off hold. Wow those look fantastic.
  15. Woops, I meant John Slade. I suck with names. My apologies
  16. If Marc Zeitlin needs a hand, my co-builder and I would be willing to lend a hand. Me: Sr. Network Engineer & Sysadmin Him: Sr. Internet Systems Admin
