gullikson
Is a Nav antenna still needed now with all of the really good GPS systems out there? I am getting ready to start the canard in the next couple of months and don't want to install a Nav antenna if I really don't need it. I am not currently flying so I'm not up to speed on the requirements or desirements;)
TMann
I put two in my canard. One in case I need a backup. It's for more than just VOR. You get weather there as well. Don't make yourself solely dependent on GPS alone. gullikson
Thanks T Mann. I appreciate your insight. I guess it won't hurt to put it in regardless, that way I have options. Just looking for ways to save weight and didn't know in this case. Thanks again. Greg
JTest
G'day If you plan to use ILS or LOC approaches you will need a Nav antenna. Jeff

Kent Ashton
A nav antenna will also do well for an AM/FM radio if you want one. I installed two; one to the nav radio and I use the spare one with an AM/FM radio. Waiter
Winglets - Vertically Oriented, VHF Comm. Put one in each winglet, that way your covered for Comm1 and Comm2 (Comm transmitters cannot share same antenna) Canard - Horizontally Oriented - Nav, is best, but, this will also work as a Comm. Your range will be significantly reduced because of the orientiation. It will work, I use it for my comm2 (I didn't install antennas in both winglets, and I no longer have a Nav). it works OK for ATIS, ground control, anything that is close. Gear leg - Loran (No longer used, but connects to my AM/FM radio.
