Phil, Maybe I can shed some light on this issue. The Long-EZ has a kink both in the wing planform and in the vertical position of the trailing edge. The kink moves the trailing edge forward about 5/8" and up about 1". This kink was to allow the VariEze cowlings to fit on the Long-EZ. When Nat modified the wing for the Cozy IV, he eliminated the kink in the planform but not in the vertical. He moved the inboard root template 4" further inboard and stretched it in length to make the trailing edge stay at the same angle as the rest of the wing. He did not change the vertical position of the template or adjust the trailing edge at all in the vertical so it still has that part of the kink in it. -Steve

Probably not since that is a compound curved thing. Also, there doesn't really seem to be a standard to follow. If anyone has an idea they'd like me to cut, I'll give it a try, time permitting. I've been considering doing some testing and helping a friend build blended winglets on his airplane but that will be awhile before anything comes of that.

I've finished my training for the summer and I've almost got my machine back together here in the new place in Vegas. I'm going to go ahead and start accepting orders again since I've been getting lots of folks trying to send me orders anyway. I've had to adjust my prices some due to huge increases in the price of foam in the last few months. These price increases have affected all foam suppliers including Wicks and Aircraft Spruce so it's not just me. -Steve

I wasn't refferring to just the nose. I meant the whole airplane including the rounded fuse but especially the wings, winglets, and canard

It will be a shame to paint those cowlings, the carbon looks so nice! You'd better believe Tony's Berkut WILL be symetrical. I've seen his and Dale's work first hand it is truly beautiful.

Looks like I'll be spending the summer in Alamogordo for some training. Unfortunately, I won't be doing any building while I'm there.

I just hauled a 4' x 9' trailer load of that stuff to the trash last night myself. Got to get the garage cleaned up now that the house is on the market. If anyone needs small pieces of this stuff in the future, I'll be happy to give away the stuff in my scrap pile (I still have scrap pile, it is just much smaller now:cool: ).

I thought about doing something like this. It would cost too much to mail it to anyone first but I could probably find someone to ship for me that is here in the Abilene area. I may try to cut a few extra to have in stock but the limiting factor is my available time. After working on the house to get it ready to sell, packing, house hunting trips, etc, not to mention my day job; there's not much of it left.

Just wanted to point out that the order deadline is the end of Jan 2009, not the 9th of Jan as could be misconstrued from my earlier post.

I've recently gotten orders to move again. Gotta love active duty; I don't think I've lived in the same place for more than 3.5 years since 1990. Anyway, I'm going to take orders through Jan 09 or until I have all I can handle before the move. After that all orders will be on hold. I plan on starting back up again when I get settled in but, due to training requirements, moving, setup, etc it will probably be Aug-Sept 09 at the earliest. My thoughts exactly. This isn't meant to provide structure, just something to mold the leading edges with. You might as well intentionally disolve the foam out after you get the glass on to save weight. Well, that depends on whether you've built your strakes already or not. If you have, they will have to be adjusted for proper fit and you will have this problem whether you get fiberglass parts or foam parts except that the foam ones will probably be much easier to adjust. If you haven't yet built your strakes, you just build them to match the leading edges. Yes, I suppose you could probably use it for either the Cozy or LEZ although, I make no claims to have done any testing whatsoever. The Girrrls and I discussed providing parts to make their Cozy IV strake leading edge design available while we were at Osh. It's something we just haven't gotten around to yet and had pretty much forgotten about it until I saw your post today. It's just an idea at this point but I think this is how Randi and Chrissi built their Cozy.

I may be adding strake leading edges to my product line if the Girrrls will ever send me the templates for their strake design;) (hint, hint...Chrissi and Randi) I can cut these along with the rest of your order if you want. Of course, these will just be foam cores, not fiberglass.

The cool thing about the Dritz cordless scissors is that if the battery dies, you just plug it in using the same wall transformer that charges the battery. This allows the same scissors to be used with a power cord so you don't have to wait to recharge.

Just bought a set at Wicks on my way home from Osh at the advice of the Girrrls. Also got most of the other stuff from the CG toolkit that I didn't already have like the permagrit rotary bits. I've only tried the scissors on dry BID so far but they cut it like butter. Erick at Wicks said they use theirs for cutting all sorts of stuff including Kevlar. Now I just have to get back to work on MY airplane!

In general I've had very good luck with FedEx although there have been a few occasions where there has been damage. The cores come packed in the blocks they are cut from so they are very well protected but foam isn't all that sturdy and can be easily damaged if mishandled. This is especially true of the elevators which are very fragile. The good new is that I always insure everything I ship through them so, if there is damage, they will pay for it. In the past I've had good luck with getting them to pay up for the damage they've caused. In Phil's case they bought him a new set of elevators and paid to ship them.

Oh, BTW, I also sampled some floatation billet foam. It is obviously not the same stuff as the wing foam called for in the plans. It has smaller cells and looks more (but not exactly) like the blue DOW squaredge you can get at Lowes or other building supply stores.

Well, I never heard back from RAF or ACS or Wicks but now I've seen quite a bit of foam from a number of sources. What I've found is that there is some variation not only between batches but sometimes even within a batch. I'm now convinced that the foam I've sampled from each source (including Wicks, ACS, and Featherlite) is the same stuff and it's the same stuff I'm using as well. This explains the different densities given from Wicks vs. ACS.

I cut a canard for a Berkut. It was the same as a Long-EZ except it had 14" long tips instead of 11". I'm still not certain about the wings. I know the Berkut has a straight trailing edge which is an option I've already made for the Long-EZ. I think it may also have spar caps of a different thickness. I plan on offering a full set of Berkut cores when I finally get to take a look at the plans.
