I hate to hijack this thread, but I hate even more to start a new thread when this one is already discussing the topic.  If the plans empty weight is supposed to be ~730 lbs, and installing a larger engine adds 150 lbs (gotta have a battery to go with that starter!), where do you typically see the extra 220 lbs (to get to 1100) coming from?

I don't know that I've seen a Q2 with this landing gear configuration before.

I saw that one too, and it looks like 1) he's holding the nose off for a long time, and 2) it looks like there's not a lot of friction in the pivot.

I know @Jon Matcho is working on digitizing, verifying, and making available the Defiant plans in the same manner as the Open-EZ.  I found an electronic copy of the plans minus the templates, which are really important to have printed accurately.  From a couple of conversations I've had, it sounds like building a Defiant is roughly twice the time and cost of building a Long-EZ.  It's pretty darn big for a homebuilt.

You don't see a Defiant up for sale very often.  Izzy's selling his.

Fuselage is at the tub stage, and it looks like the project includes:
--hardware (including wheels, brakes, hinges, etc) from Brock
--prefabricated landing gear bow, fairings, canopy, cowl, turtledeck
--engine mount, oil cooler, alternator, wingtip lights and some other hardware I don't recognize
--foam for the wings
--plans, templates, jigs, etc.

Anyone looking for a jump start on a Long-EZ? This seems like a pretty good deal, assuming the workmanship is good.

Yes, in part.  You'd have to increase the sweep of the center section spar, but that's not all.  The stock wing has the shear web forward of the spar cap, while the CSS has the shear web aft of the spar cap. You'd have to relocate the wing's shear web to be aft of the spar cap, in order for the shear web to be continuous between the CSS and the wing.  I'm no airplane designer (but I'm learning!), but moving the shear web aft sends up red flags--I don't know the proper terminology, but I'd be worried that moving the "center of stiffness" aft in relation to the chordwise lift distribution could lead to structural instability.  Think Tacoma Narrows Bridge.  It seems to me that you'd be better served by leaving the CSS's sweep alone, and moving the wing's spar caps to be forward of the shear web.
