  1. Spod- Thats a great idea I think- about the non-return valve in each L and R strake tank. Give me a McMaster Carr part number!!! The fuel venting during flight due to a lost fuel cap is the only real concern, I have heard, other than fuel contamination[reason for two separate tanks]. I would like to consider getting another 3.5 gallons of fuel available if the under spar sump is a good move. More thoughts?
  2. Wow! Very clean shop....I need to follow suite. Would pass the kid glove test!
  3. Thank Jack. As Hall & Oats say..."I can go for that".
  4. Wayne put the hinging door spin on my idea. I like that he used simple finger tip pull holes, instead of hardware....smooth simple move. I originally wanted just some room to put charts, waterbottles, a camera etc....and better foot access. It's definitely usable space if you put the lights in the nose[typical single light under left seat] and move the electrical buses[typical-under right seat] to the sides of the nose as well. The last item is the trim...if you go electric on the firewall, with a Wright/Hanka assembly...your roll trim can go amscray on the center column. And the support is NOT missed that goes under your knees... Heres some pics of my config. I cant resist...posting this last pic showing builder/friend Ted who came down to see the angled IP effect and the ability to raise the knees for an alternate sitting position on long cruise. His expression says volumes... [the side boards against the longerons are preparatory to setting the foam blocks against the canopy, that was removed to get Ted in the hotseat.]
  5. Good idea to know about places like that. Hadn't thought of it. Can you give me a couple of those aircraft junkyards websites? That would be a great resource to have in my file.. Are there alternatives to barnstormers pertaining to that kind of website? I am also looking for a 540 to rebuild possibly. I had a deposit on an engine to be built from a core with the 9:1 pistons in it, but am having trouble with that. So I am looking at options. Thanks.
  6. Jack-Is that why [i call them "ears"]...a guy has to make sure the mounting ears are part of an engine quote, when buying or looking at buying a 540? Because they are a separate interchangeable part? But a guy isn't stuck if he has the "wrong" ears, he can just buy a suitable pair? The crazy thing is a 540 core is a 540 core is a 540 core, or so I was to believe. I know the "ears" are a bolt on item, so I think a guy could just hunt for the ones to match the engine mount and then you'd be in business. Only downside is - it's like 300 bucks for a different set of 4 mounts, right? Peanutbutter boy out...=]
  7. I love it- thats how I mounted my center hardpoint, completely by coincidence, it matches your dimension. Since the Velocity Mfg boys were going to build me a 540 engine mount to the template I would send them...I didn't have to coordinate it. But since I am gonna get one from you...groovy that we are on the same page. Whoops- Hey, I've got your chocolate on MY peanut butter!!!!=]
  8. On the top single FW mounting point, thats 10 inches center to center above the two top Firewall o360 mounting points, right? Looks quite lovely, those photos there=] BTW - Happy New Year to you and all the Canardians.
  9. This is some major pain for this guy.I want to avoid this for sure. Chrissi, what mounts are you making your 540 motor hanger to mate with? Gracias....
  10. Well. Yow. Where to begin. Look in the archives for all of the EXTENSIVE discussions about alternative engines...performance...etc. Actually, not withstanding the giant question mark of the proposed engine you are proposing...a person can add to much engine to an airframe and have the capability to render themselves into oblivion. Theres a great reprinted article written by an RV group about TIO engines and altitude and easily passing beyond VNE due to power or gravity. Go look at all the information thats already posted about all your questions. Its there. Theres a LOT of claims about aircraft related modifications and equipment that remains to be proven...hopefully without incident. Good luck.
  11. Day jobs.... Well actually I have more of a night job. Dag-nab-it, somebodies got to do it. What can I say that Hervé Villechaize on SNL could not say better.. Alas, I confess, I AM..."the Batman". Just building the Cozy540 bat plane....to bad I can't paint it black.
  12. Oh, the joy!!!! it appears I am going to be able burn through a delightful pile of money...hit and missing, to get my combination right. Is there a secret handshake or tattoo that I need to get so that I can become one of the innercircle and thus decipher this great enigma. Perhaps the mounts have serial#'s?....I need to assend the mountain and talk to a Guru-exspurt at mounting a 540..... Just prooves my iguana like ignorance=] BTW- Sorry to hijack you guyz 13b mount thread....=[ Ding!- A lightbulb just went off over my head!....Lynn- I will PM you about hiring you as my 540 jungle guide...Gracis regarding saving me a bunch of headaches!!!!=]
  13. Lynn- I knew the mounts were important to make sure they were included as part of an engine "deal" for that 250 dollar reason...but didn't know there were two different types of mounts. Are the Lord mount 'dough nuts' the equalizing part here? Or are there different Lord dough nuts for the two types of 540 core mounts. What are the names for the two diff mount arrangements? Girrrls. What are the mounts that you are building to? Velocity mentioned absolutely NOTHING about this- all they wanted was to know if it was a parallel or angle head engine....so I am glad this surfaced. I need to have everything match obviously.
  14. Yea, it is shaped to fit my preference. It is also doubled for rigidity for the front hinge mounting. Although I am not using Uli's hinges I can suggest going to Jerry's website for his tips about placement.
  15. Heres a view of the 8-3/8 inch extend-o-schnoz...before working on mounting the pedals and closing it up. If you do your nose like Marc and Don H and Doug and Patty's [to name a few, and some others I've seen] it looks good short[per plans]... But if you get it all blocky and pointing down to much it looks pretty stubby[and we've seen those before too... so I figured extending it would guarantee me un-stubbyness. It defibnatly worked.
  16. Is a parallel head, a parallel head, a parallel head core all the same? I was under the impression that they were all the same core/same Dynafocal, same Lord mounts?... The angle head is the heavier 540 engine and that is NOT the engine to put in the CozyIV. I am sure the Cozy girrrlz are savvy to this. But Lynn, is this the two different cores, therefore two diff dynafocal mounts you are referring to?
  17. TMann, I too am slurping...cuz Chrissi emailed me last week saying they are working on the 540 mount for the Cozy MarkIV... ....now I can just get theirs instead of sending my F.W.template to Velocity..and them farming it out. Low and behold my center top F.W. hardpoint ended up being in the exact 10 inch center to center position they were building the jig to! What luck=] Sluuuuuuurp! Ok - I admit I am in the wrong post-hole...over here in the rotary rastafarians....but it was...oh f'get it....
  18. Sorry I forgot to mention that a guy needs to order the 2" wide version from Summit..they are available in 2inch and 3 inch width. No hookers allowed in my plane:rolleyes: Glad they're workin' for you though Rvig.=]
  19. For value, these 6 point belts [omit the bottom two if you want 4- thats what I think I will do] with the ease of a single twist racing closure, from Summit racing, for 129 bucks sure seem GREAT! At the cost of those Hookers- they ain't goin' in my plane...sophomoric name, and they are expensive.[i guess heavy too.] These G-Force's look pretty racy...and when you look at them close, they still don't look like they will wear out very quick. Aren't those Hooker harness' an aerobatic type item?
  20. It would be great visually to have one of these generated on a stock Mark IV airframe/power plant. Very neat indeed.
  21. This should warrant starting a new thread..on "shops". The Goood, The baaad, and the ugly. Post shop pics -without any fudging now...there and face the music.
  22. Let me dig out a picture to show this. Actually there is no change to the top center area of the panel widthwise or its shape height wise-these pics have the original panel top, just the lower panel is sliced and spacered up 3/4". This area is well within the bubble. These pics are after the second "trial' canopy cut.. next will be the taping and cutting down to the 1/4 inch line. The old first cuts will be lost in that trimming. I think its working for me...in gaining the 3/4 inch spacer [seen between the paper templates] the net top of the whole I.P gained 1/8 inch. I will probably cut the top center area down 3/8" anyway- as it seemed a bit tall and I won't be using the Cozy prefab electric panel I don't think. Theres time for that later...but it would be nice to see over the nose a bit easier for my short-stuff spouse.
  23. It is easier if I just post my emails from MGL regarding my questions. Rainier is trying to sell his product, but also seems pretty candid about it all. He also is very above board, regarding answering peoples questions about what MGL is offering. There is nothing here that is privileged information. At what is offered NOW..it is a great value. Let alone with what is on down the line. This is exactly what you were talking about Chrissi- everybody should wait to see what is coming, due to the "EFIS wars" for market position in the next year or two. These two emails are just Microsoft notepad format. MGL questions one.txt MGL questionss two(2).txt
  24. I think Chrissi and Randi are the secret Beta project...they just haven't added the upswept tips and winglets! It is so cool looking...it almost hurts to put wings on that.
