  1. G'day I think I saw that on Mythbusters last week. ;-D Jeff
  2. G'day I sent an email, but didn't get a reply. If you send some pics, I would like to look and maybe discuss. I would suggest posting the pics here too, but that is only me.... Thanks in advance. Jeff
  3. G'day Tmann We have been waiting for over 6 months and no pictures.... You holding out? Really, I am getting ready to lay-up the canard and I want to get some ideas (if you don't mind). Thanks in advance; JeffT
  4. G'day KillerB I had the same problem with my lay-ups on the sides. I have not had the problem after I did my layups above 75 degrees. The materials in my case may have been under temp during cure. All my layups have been greatly improved after the material was at temp for 3 hours before layup and during cure. I did mine in a hanger in Jan in MD....Cold. Keep it up! Much of the sides get cut for strakes/storage later. Keep up the good work. Oh, be careful on your picture posts. I have stopped because several people write information that scared the hell out of my family. I was posting so friends and family around the world who said they wanted to be part of the project could see the progress and I could ask the folks here questions. Most of the replies here were GREAT, but I can think of Two by one person that almost caused so many problems at home that it bloody near caused a blue between the family. I have elected to not share pictures as general posts, but rather send them directly to several people that know the answers. I am only a few months ahead of you and if you have any questions please feel free to ask. I may have already learned the lesson the hard way and have several ideas. I discovered the side layups would have been easier if under the longerons a 45 degree timber was installed like the lower longeron. Glass does not like 90 degree corners. I just don't understand why the plans have not been changed. I also may only be crazy on this one too. Hope to see you flying soon. Jeff
  5. G'day I just purchased the Warner Electric 4" travel capable of 100 lbs for $180.00; part name M-Track. I checked Google for "Warner Electric Linear Actuator" and went to the Warner Electric web site. The site has some old part information where the name was A-Track 1 but that has been replaced by the new name M-Track light duty actuator. I went to the distrubuter locator section of the Warner Electric site and called the numbers. I purchased on the phone and should have the actuator within two days of ordering. I hope this information is helpful. I will post more later.... Jeff
  6. G'day Jon I have been told by my technical advisor you are correct. Thanks for your comments and support; Jeff
  7. G'day mfryer Thank you for your comments. I made another F22 doubler and installed it per plans on the correct side and then put the 2" BID strips. F22 now has 2 not 1 doubler. (I posted a thread on it several weeks ago) F22 now has a doubler on each side, that is why the picture looks strange. I will cut off part of the forward doubler later if needed. My technical advisor has told me it looks different but it will work. Thank you again; Jeff
  8. G'day Mfryer Not sure what you mean about the F22 join or F28 looking a little different. I do still need to trim the extra glass, but that will wait for another day or two. I don't get to work on weekday evenings due to commute. If you explain your concern I will look at the issue. Thanks again; Jeff
  9. G'day Big Steve I try to stay rigidly flexible. I set some plans and then understand I only control what I can. Friday's winds, beyond my control outside. I learned and moved into the hanger where I could close the door.... Saturday was a better, but much longer day. Total time was around 17 hours or so. Thanks for your comments; Jeff
  10. G'day Hat Thank you for your concern. The tabs on the bottom were removed not the top. Please take a few minutes and look at my post from the last few days (April 13, 2008). You will see the fuselage tub. I did not remove the top tabs until Chapter 7 per plans. I understand your concern. My tech advisor told me to cut the lower tabs off, but he is 6' 3" and he may have found they were in the way for his long legs. I am only 5' 9" so they may not have been an issue, but they are removed. Thanks again; Jeff
  11. G'day Well, the weather got above 70 degrees for two days. Friday, April 11, I quickly moved the fuselage outside of the hanger and started the prep work for the uni. I didn't have help so it was a task. I then started the layup and Mother nature then added some 20 MPH wind to make it very interesting. Every time I took my hand off the glass to do something the wind blew it across the airfield.... Oh, did I say I was doing this myself. I was committed because the fuselage was slurried and clamped to two saw horses. I was determined to get 1/2 of the fuselage done on Friday..... Well, Friday was also my Son's third birthday.... Mommy had some plans too. Well, the women won. I only got one layer of glass applies and then peel plied the one layer and then moved the fuselage into the hanger.... Saturday, April 12, I got up and was in the hanger by 8:00 AM. The winds were planned to be higher than Friday. I was a little smarter. I decided to work in the hanger with the door open and some drop cloths on the floor to reduce drip mess. The temps were above 70 by 9:30 AM and I was ready... I managed to complete the two layers on the one side and then re-position the fuselage and finish glassing the tub. I finished around 7:00 PM and went home. Pictures attached are of my father inspecting my work in the warm room after cure on Sunday. Sunday, April 13, weather back in the 50's... I would rather be lucky than good. Jeff
  12. G'day all The weather was cold and damp this weekend so the Fuselage outer skin had to wait. The layup is just to big for my warm room. The temps only make it into the 50s most of the weekend and the rain didn't help much. I did manage to get most of Chapter 8 completed. I built the rollover and installed a new marker beacon antenna on my 1956 Cessna 172. I am finished with my annual and just need to install the seats. I will be flying next weekend if the weather is good. Oh yeah, chapter 8 rollover. I have posted several pictures. I know it isn't exactly as plans. I have trimmed the top down to allow for my GPS antenna. Here are several pictures. Jeff
  13. G'day I use a simple seven step process that I have perfected. Step 1 Measure with micrometer. Step 2 Mark with a fine calk. Step 3 Cut with a sharp axe. Step 4 Beat or Sand to fit. Step 5 Flox the gaps. Step 6 Paint to match. (Optional) Step 7(a) Determine it is backwards. Yell "F**K ME TO TEARS!" Step 7 Drink a Beer. Think what to do next. Hope this helps. Feel free to use the system anytime. Jeff
  14. That is a mod to allow extra room for gear doors to close all the way. My advisor told me to not add more than 1 inch to the bottom because of the nose gear crank clearance. He said it was easier to correct now than wait until I discovered that when the nose wheel was retracted the doors didn't have room to close. I added some spare .999 inch foam. I hope this helps. Jeff
  15. G'day Good eye. I wished I would have seen that about four weeks ago.... Yes, I have a doubler on both sides of F22 now. I will trim the corners of the forward one down for the canard. I sniffed a few to many fumes that day and mis-read (Doh!) the plans. Mid-week after the cure I noticed the problem (Doh doh doh...). I made another doubler per earlier chapter; glassed and installed on the back (correct side) of F22. I then restrapped with BID. I wrapped the mess with plastic wrap, epoxy, and Flox. I then used clamps to install the second F22 doubler on the correct side. My bulkhead now has two doublers (tripler). As I said, I will need to trim the forward doubler to install the canard later. Microsoft calls this a service pack for an undocumented feature. I will have a weight penalty in the nose area. I will have to start drinking diet beer. Thanks for your comments and good eye. I didn't get the feedback for several days and the whole thing had cured. I would have damanged F22 in the removal and re-install process. Jeff
  16. G'day all I have almost finished Chapter 7 of my Open Ez. I formed and shaped the fuselage over the last couple of weekends. I have attached a couple of pics. Jeff
  17. G'day Hat Yes it does. It seems my hanger mate's nose is almost as well known as he is. Jeff
  18. And now the pictures that didn't attach....due to size. I resized.... Jeff
  19. G'day Mike I am not sure if my warm room could be considered a clean room. I have a lot of foam on the floor, but the shopvac will clean it up fast. I am finishing Chapter 7 this week. The room has allowed me to work on my project during the winter. I didn't start building the aircraft until after New Years, so I am making good progress. I have included a couple of pictures of the room..... Jeff
  20. G'day Jon Great! Thanks. I am finishing Chapter 6 this weekend and will be cutting the section out on Sunday with any luck and my two kids get over the flu again..... Thanks again. Jeff
  21. G'day all I talked with Larry at Featherlite and ordered the $30 NB and another $1500 of stuff.... Hmmm, I have the same problem at Lowes and Home Depot.... I thank you, but my wife is going to have a COW! We have a herd in my yard already... He he he.... Jeff
  22. G'day This may seem like a stupid question but with the TERF CD being printed on regular paper not the plans sized paper from Burt the template on Chapter 7 Page 1 is to small. Does anybody have the dimensions of the rounded area that is cut out under F28? Thanks in advance.... Jeff
  23. G'day I got the answer; Aerocanard and Featherlite sell the pre made part.
  24. G'day I got the answer from another section. Featherlite and AeroCanard sell the part. Thanks Jeff
  25. G'day all Thanks for the quick reply. I will contact Featherlite and Aerocanard today. The folks that post on Canard Zone again have saved my bacon! Now if I could get somebody to take care of my lard..... Jeff
