  1. Just to post a couple of pics of Jack's and my work on my wings over last weekend to show the spar cap assemblies since many are wondering about the blended cores structure. Veru easy to accomplish and is now ready to cut out the rudders.

Yes, I am not just "winging" it...but am working with the brightest in our community. Looking at a "system" using oversize wet strake leading edges, longer original canard etc to fulfill my 540 powered Cozy with regards to Cg and performance across the board.

Thanks, Marc, Jack, Chris, Lynn for all your help and input.

i see the LE is even, stab and wing that is, and when i did mine there was no way it could be done. one would need to draw a line from wing le(side view) to the tip of the stab Le, them copy that angel. 62.5 iirc.

you just showed me a pic of a flying BW and i saw a convexed LE right at the blend (it is what i would expect if one did not alter the stab but left it stock).

so, did you make a new airfoil temp for cutting the big end of your stab ?

it looks factory ? even i cant read this...i will dodal it, tap, tap, here you are

  2. That's the ticket. Make the 3" troughs. Cut the L.E.'s off with a hot wire. Round the fronts and 2 ply BID shear web to start out with. Trough the back of the L.E. to allow the wireing for the tip lights/stobe. Drag a heavy string [or the wire] through and exit it at the top. Then 5 min epoxy the L.E.s back on [4 hands is good for this] and install the spar caps. 2 layers 3 inch wide spar tape to the top, then 2 @ 4 Inches down, 2 more at 6" down and the last 2 at 6" below that. Gives 8 layers of spar tape through the blend. Trough the rudder cable line and install the comm tapes and torriods. Micro the surfaces and then 2 plies UNI at the proper orientation to cover. MAMMA MIA!!! Thats a SPICY MEATBALL!!! No, actually thats a beautiful strong B.W. =)

No liability for the above is expressed or implied. Quality is totally subjective to the builders ability and consistency. YMMV.

did you follow......i'll pm this. sorry
  3. i put in a cap and a spar (in the first wing/blend).

i tapered the tape as it got closer to the tip (it made no sense to put all that wight up there). i kept the cap 3" all the way up

mine is also one long run, no splice, although ilbet yours was a lot easier to cover;)

  4. This shows a 12 inch diameter disk for scale. Also sanding out the sparcap depth prior to hot wiring off the leading edge. The leading edge matches the wing leading edge.

All of this is completely experimental and YMMV. I am only offering these as a partial tease to show a flown design that worked to above 260MPH. Other guys are hemming and hawing about what goes into the blend...I know this works. The Cozy is a subtly different platform, and as best I can, I have pieced together what seems best for the Cozy540 airframe I have produced to work. As far the the winglet, no questionable interior structure, just a proven, simple sparcap.

As we talked, a valid concern is the various blended structure/no structure assemblies, and the possible failure and bad name associated with them, based upon some of the structurless assemblies.

I hope that doesn't happen. Then there is the CG issues and deep stall consideration.

So this is what I am doing along with other aspects in my airplane...and to others, I say good on ya.:)

    Peace out.

i just did my last wing/blend and with hope i'll get the stab on tomarow  its funny how mine looks so much like yours...

  5. I am also a short hop south of Steve here in Olympia, if you come over to the cooler side of the state (ha ha) you can check out my Long-EZ project as well.

I'll be filling in for you on the hot wire job since you can't make it.

i wish you could be here to see the fruits of your labor:D

the first wing i did spent a month in the jig with nothing but cursing and thumb nail biting.

your wing cuts are already coming out of the jig today.

Evey were i go on the wing in fine all 5 fit gr8.

I'll be starting the blended end i an hour or so.

    once again, many thanks

PS. if you need a hot saw buddy, this guy can count to 15 with out missing any numbers ;)

  6. Again, thanks for all the posts! There will be times when I will ask advice and hope it is not misconstrued as wanting someone else to do my thinking for me.

This is definitely a proof of concept. I am trying to do my best to keep it feasible other wise there would be not point. I do believe the frame is of sound construction and when joined with the fuselage they would form a strong composite structure. When I reach the end of the virtual build, and it did not end up in the virtual dumpster, then it would go on to the professionals. I create complex structures everyday and understand the need for engineering. Certainly not an uncommon process and one I follow on my multi million dollar projects.

Perhaps the emphasis of this build should not be just to reduce build time but to create a construction method that would appeal to those outside of this forum. If I see one more RV I may puke.:irked:

    Well back to the build...

If the tube frame was ordered and arrived on a Monday and the control components arrived on the same day then it took me three hours to get the controls installed. I had the template for the inst panel and constructed it prior to the arrival of the frame. If I constructed the inst panel per plans and it took me 4 hours then I have 7 hours invested in the project so far. I think the next items to install would be the gear so I can get it on to a rolling platform. I would construct the main gear legs as per plans. The frame is already prepared to accept the main and nose gear. With the nose gear I will install the lift motor as well. (Advice) Anyone see a problem with that order?

I should start a parts list along with prices and weights. Don't want to build a 2000# hundred thousand dollar doe-doe-bird

can you build in a door ? i hate denting up my strakes getting in and out.

and # 2 a biggie for me in washington.....flots, plz add this option

  7. Well unfortunately Steve, I'm on the east side of Washington in Spokane. I would be there at 6 a.m. knocking on your door though if I were on the West side of the state :D . I greatly appreciate the offer though and I hope your project is going well.

well thanks, it is going very well(time for the other shoe to drop).

i did get some help from this forum for tomorrows wing cutting.:D

    and you are welcome anytime.

  8. Have you decided to ditch the turbo's?

i wont need the twin set up, AL has no turbos and the low compression rotor's(9.1) same as mine and are intakes look about the same and hes 170knt @ 50% power burning 9.5.
  9. Is this it Steve??:yikes: You've gone to the 20B side for sure? And still not smoking? Daddy proud o' you! By the way, 150#? Dude, go get a burger and stop spending on the plane for food.:D Good luck!

    164# wow, no more w/b issue's
  10. just want to move stuff around in the shop so i can finish my wings

can i mount the 20b on the fw ?

no wings,no canard,no people, no fule

will it be safe to roll around(out of the shop on to the street, around the corner and into a car port ?

  11. If they say they don't want the money, leave it in the plane after the ride. It will be appreciated.

IMHO, It's just the right thing to do.

thats what i was planing to do, but i got the feeling that they would be insulted. the wording was some thing like "most infaticly no thank you"

just pay it forward....are turn at bat

  12. i was waving 20's around and only got 4 rides

nobody needed the money, but it sure got me in the planes

hope you like upside down and fast turns est.

i think chris will be brakeing mock this year

    he gr8 for rides

    so is steve W

and jon and bill.....there are lots of cool foks willing and able

early is good, easy in and back

    no joy on sunday

hit up the kitten for a ride (john)

but stay right above the field so you can glide back....:envy:

  13. When theres something written worth responding to, people tend to respond. Lately there's been just a bunch of theorizing and farting around. What more can be said, the posts have kinda run their course. You could be like dust and start answering your own questions.;)

i would post but all i seam to do is mods, and if i share them you will use me for a pin cushion
  14. i was just going to think of that.............

thanks T-man for filling in for the girls......(i cant believe they missed this one ?) age?? to busy to care, boy friends, food ?....humm:p

  15. you have just gotten a killer deal, way to time it :bad::sad::mad::P i wish i was you. 500 then 875 and 2 weeks wait and all i had was a seat- back lol
