  1. Well now I'm confused Dust. Are you saying the West pumps are the way to go now even though they only last a gallon and a half?
  2. A laptop can be helpful if you know how to put the system together. I plan on using a laptop plugged into a docking station in the console. Then using a 17" flip down media monitor that is attatched above on the canopy. I plan on using the monitor driven by the laptop to display moving map, while using the laptop also to drive normal appearing guages. (I don't like the current trend of putting all flight information on computer screens! Ye old steam guages are much easier to read than a computer screen! Think of it as a digitally controlled watch that displays the hands of time.) Should the electrical system take a dump, the laptop will have it's own battery to run with for 2-3 hours. The mollen 12 channel GPS I have right now is the size of a matchbox and plugs into the USB port. The solid state attitude, airspeed, and altitude system I'm looking at can also run from the laptop power system. Obviously technology is changing so fast that by the time I have my plane ready, this could be common place... or something more interesting could come along. But that is the plan for now. Joe! Where's our easy going brother huggin' hippie? I think you took what John said the wrong way. As you build, keep an eye out over here. When you see a few newbies come and go after talking about "what's the big deal" (I said that) and "how fast can I build this thing?" (sounds vaguely familiar), then you will understand John's perspective. He just doesn't want you to get discouraged and quit if 12 months turns out to be an unrealistic expectation. I hope you DO build it in 12 months and beat Mr. Higgins' record. (He told me he thought I should build an RV! ) So... uh... peace out, or... how did that go? Uh... I wish you plenty of beatings in prison... so that parole is so much sweeter? That doesn't sound quite right...
  3. GIB turns into BOW and fills up garage with lifelong collection of ceramic skunks while threatening to kick me out of said garage and attatched home leaving me with little money and seriously in debt to Dewey, Skrewum, & Howe much less the funds to build 4 seat Cozy which could be a blessing in disguise since I would then only need to build a 1 seat canard all because the !@#$%#$!!! pump couldn't hold its fluids.
  4. Ranting about price! (skip ahead for more meaninful epoxy pump information...) 1. John Smith says the price is right if someone is willing and able to pay it. (I kinda paraphrased that one.) 2. I'm in the software business, and the price of the software is usually 30% of the net gain in income created by it's use. (I work for a company that saves hospitals millions of dollars every year... our software is a little expensive despite the fact that its production cost is relatively low, or almost $0 for each new hospital!) 3. The price of an item is its cost plus a reasonable profit for the manufacturer, distributor, sales rep, local government, federal government, and the cost of those items that "fall off the truck." Now, since the pump appears to be 2 plastic containers, a metal stand, and a few leaky gaskets... I would prefer to pay Number 3. I expect that would put the pump around $75. However, those involved with the sale of the pump are aware that we will be working thousands of hours on our aircraft. A sticky stuff pump could reasonably save us hundreds of $$$ in productivity. Since this product saves valuable time, and since there is no competition, the price stands at $219. Can you tell my Masters' studies were in Economics? (-- skip to here! --) I didn't mean to get into all of that... I just wanted to know if the @#$%!@##@!!! thing was gonna spring a leak on my motorcycle! (The only place I have to put the hot box)
  5. Whoops... sorry about performing CPR on a dead post! There is alot of flack on one of the mail groups about pumps springing leaks at inoportune moments and soaking cloths, water heaters, garages, neighbor's kitty with large amounts of sticky stuff enraging spouse, family, fire departments, CDC, and neighbors. This has come up just as I am getting ready to place my first order. I for one don't want to pony up the 200 big ones if a scale and old tupperware bowls are more reliable. Anyone have a problem with leaks?
  6. It looks like a few of us pulled ourselves out of the swamp... 6 years in Conroe, 3 in The Woodlands, then off to Baylor University in Waco. There was a time when I had to explain to people where Waco TX was located.
  7. A few of us work in the IT field. Even we only know enough to be dangerous... very dangerous! Things change so fast, sometimes its difficult to keep up. Just when you get to grips with one technology, 5 new ones are released. But we all have our different skills and we come here to share with one goal in mind.
  8. I'm going to widen the fuselage by 4", but no major changes.
  9. uh... guys? Maybe you should make that point without pictures attached to your ID's. Just a thought.
  10. ... there's something about plugging in my drawers to an electrical current that makes me a little uncomfortable.
  11. ... which brings me all the way back to my first post ever, I think I need a BRS parachute on my plane!
  12. I plan on giving AS&S a shot simply because the SE wharehouse is only about 2 hours away. But I plan on buying everything by line item. I think I want to stock up on the glass cloth and some of the fittings like John said. It will be next month, but I'll relay my experience with them. On a side note, I mentioned to my wife that I was getting her an electric nose lift for Valentine's Day. Sheesh... she didn't take that very well!
  13. If the Berkut is also using the Roncz airfoil, what are they doing at altitude since 300mph indicated would be waayyy over Mach 0.5?
  14. Is this a bad time to mention I found the article on the Avanti... and that I was right?
  15. Years? No way... I check your site every few days to see the latest. If the last updated date has changed... I tear through it looking for the updates. Hey that reminds me... could you add pointers to the last pages that have been updated?
  16. I would respectfully disagree with John. Although I am just setting up shop, while John is almost flying, I think some considerations can be made ahead of time and simplify building. John, if you decide ahead of time to build a rotary (or whatever), won't that help with plumbing and other decisions instead of back-tracking and reconstruction?
  17. Okay... I stayed out of the discussion of administration before the website moved. I held my thoughts when all of the trial balloon changes were floated as innocent ideas for improvement. But enough is enough. Leave Dust the Hell ALONE! So you don't like him inserting "Dustpick" in posts he thinks need to be saved or marked. Get over it! Sure its an inefficient way of marking good threads, but right now you have no way of sifting diamonds from dirt. Dust, a self-proclaimed non computer person, has come up with a solution while others are still considering the problem for months. Get busy writing code to change this and leave Dusts' breadcrumbs alone until you have paved the path! And who the Hell says this forum needs to be another repository of collected information? Does the internet NEED one more canard archive of information? Don't the UCS, CSA, mail lists, cozy newsletters, et al cover every technical detail? The value is not in the archive... the value is in the people! I'd rather ask a builder a question than sift through the archives and hope the answer I find hasn't changed! So WHAT if the question has been answered 500 times. Don't tell people to go look it up in the archive! The real repository of information is people like Dust and John who are doing it. One value of this site is to be able to ask a question and have it answered by several people. The other value, and this is the only one exclusive to this forum, is to be able to "shoot the breeze" and have fun discussing wild outlandish ideas unmoderated. At this point I wanted to illustrate my point by telling the story how my favorite restaraunt was ruined when it decided to become more "respectable"... but I'm out of time, and I think you get the point.
  18. 300 mph Cozy is nuts? Well... the Berkut is basically an improved LongEZ. What's nuts about taking a 4 seater to that level? At this point I'm not saying that I will try it. But C'mon people! Where's the fire of enginuity that burns in us to never be satisfied whith the status quo? Where's the spark that defies conventional wisdom and says "yes... man CAN fly!" Aren't lost causes the only ones worth fighting for?!?!?! Isn't defying the incredible odds against us what made this country great?!?!?! Did George Washington ever say "I'm not going to cross the English Channel because its cold and there are too many Brits with guns on the other side"?!?!?! WELL I FOR ONE AM NOT GOING TO STAND IDLE WHILE YOU PEOPLE DENEGRATE OUR GREAT COUNTRY! YOU CAN ALL JUST... wait... $50 a square yard? This carbon fiber stuff is expensive! Uh, 200mph? I'm good with that.
  19. I REALLY like the idea of a water heating system seperate from the engine cooling system. I'm not worried about leaks from the system, but moving the engines coolant from back to front and back introduces possible problems with air pockets or pump failures. With a seperate system, if there is a failure in the cabin heating system, its no longer engine critical. But the benefit of heat transfer is still there. Thanks Wayne!
  20. Dust! Fly as high as you want. I know you'll do the homework before trying it. And if you and your houndsicle ever get stuck in Atlanta again for 3 days, let me know and I'll come down and rescue you!
  21. Jon, I tried to change MarbleTurtle to Napoleon Bonapart, but I couldn't resolve how to do it! Until I can change my alias to my real name, I will continue to insite fisticuffs and generally question the manhood of all to fail proclaim me Grandpoohbah of all things relevant!
  22. No... there is no problem with elevator flutter when one sticks to the design parameters. What I am thinking about is how some of us are looking at higher powered engines for our Cozys (and one jet powered Cozy ). The largest single problem with exceeding Vne up to... say 250mph or 300mph is the potential for catastrophic elevator flutter.
  23. Agreed! Whoops... Perry himself has written through the Unofficial Cozy e-mail list that he knows that parts of his design are wrong and at some point he is going to change them. Let me say again that my goal would be, not to outperform a standard prop, but to reach close to the cruise performance of a standard prop while eliminating the complexity of driving a standard prop with an auto conversion. Of course, at static (0 mph) speed, the ducted fan IS already more efficient! Also as I said before, if half of the "ducting" is actually the streamlined body of the aircraft, the penalty of the ductwork is reduced.
