  1. It's not so much that the forum software allows or disallows the spiders to read the content; it's that most spiders cannot read dynamic content (pages that use '?' characters in the URL). On this forum we have seen Inktomi spiders able to browse around wherever a link was available to a non-registered user. They used to be, but with the move and redirect from www.cozyaircraft.com/forum we appear to have lost them. I think this is good, provided the root site (www.canardzone.com) is found by the spiders and ultimately fed into the search engines. I can certainly put a link to your site at www.canardzone.com/?Section=Links if you do the same. Shall we?
  2. Yes. This is actually related to the browser situation, for which I have caved into the massive pressures pushing resolution of this issue. I will be discussing options to improve both issues this evening with some of the greatest minds on the planet. I will keep everyone posted. Regardless, I still think you should throw away your Mac/Linux contraption. Switch back from Mac Switch to Linux
  3. Browse to http://www.canardzone.com/?Section=ProposedHierarchy for updates including feedback from this thread. For those that do not have Internet Explorer, you can download a RTF file here. Thanks to all who contributed feedback this round.
  4. If you were watching TV and heard someone trying to jimmy your back door open, here's the order of things you'd get upset with: 1) the jerk at the door 2) the brand of door for exposing a flaw 3) the majority shareholder of the door company Hackers are criminals. Linux has security flaws, so does the Mac, and so does Microsoft -- they all do. Microsoft just happens to be the most attacked and written about. Assuming you're talking about open source Linux vs. Windows 2000+, I would have to disagree. Over the past two years, I have seen Microsoft turnaround fixes to security threats within the same day as when they had been reported. Other fixes require no more than 1-2 days to distribute via their www.windowsupdate.com site. I hear what you're saying, but once you use the equivalent of a power tool, it's hard to put it down -- especially when you get more done through its use. Regardless, I acknowledge the need to support the common denominator for Web browsing and will see what I can do to accomodate. Your site works for me, and I want www.canardzone.com to work for everyone. Still, this light-hearted flash movie sums up my feelings for Linux: Switch to Linux
  5. No offense here John, but I'm a huge fan of writing computer programs to write more computer programs. The tool is entirely extensible, but has not yet been extended to support all Web browsers. It's also not so much a code generator I'm using though, than a Web site manager. For the curious, you can find more about it here. I agree. With regard to content, I feel priority #1 is to enhance the forum hierarchy so that posts happen in more appropriate areas so that the weight of our collective knowledge base becomes ever so valuable. Going forward, there's nothing that cannot be done given time and money. I am all ears. Hmmm, I agree that we should cater to Cozys, Longs, and others, but what better way to get the juices flowing than to be taunted to sand some Starship-like lines into your Cozy project? It would actually be nice to have list e-mails feed in and through the forums and give members the choice of how they wish to interact with the forum. This would be quite a feat, but something to move towards... gradually. Thanks for your feedback John, et al.

    New Virus

No need to apologize when all things are considered in the Coffee House. For virus protection, browse to either one of these links: McAfee or Norton. These are the two most popular virus products.
  7. I say go for it. Shell out the $500 and spend many a night updating the plans with the corrections from the newsletters and reading ahead. Go crazy and get the 'practice kit' from Aircraft Spruce -- you can "build" that in your kitchen. Speaking of ACS, get catalogs from Aircraft Spruce and Wicks and spend months planning your first order. Visit a few projects to get a feel for what you're getting into. This was about the order I did things. I'm in the same boat of working to establish a good building area while I read the plans. I have no regrets at all and continue to be dead set on flying a Cozy that I will eventually build.
  8. Ha, I guessed wrong on that one. I suppose it doesn't count though that Microsoft owns $150M worth of Apple though? I did view the site using IE running on Apple's OS and it was viewable, although not perfect. The problem is that all browsers, no matter how supportive of open standards they claim to be, do take some amount of liberty in how they implement those standards. You will always see differences in how a site views between different browsers. The result is that Web sites are often forced to effectively maintain multiple versions and implementations so that the site renders on all browsers. This results in increased costs to maintain sites. I am not about to petition any anti-Microsoft person to switch to Internet Explorer. I do acknowledge that the main www.canardzone.com site is only viewable using Internet Explorer. I recognized this as acceptable for most (but not all) going in, and wondered when it would come to a head. This situation gives me some motivation to have development at Brickhouse Software open up to supporting other browsers. I promise that I will look for easy adjustments that can be made so that the site is viewable by everyone, even if not as pretty as when viewed in Internet Explorer. Remember, the forums should have no problem whatsoever. Please keep in mind that this service is FREE...
  9. This has been corrected and should now be fine to send e-mail to support@canardzone.com.
  10. Everyone, the only area that some people are having problems with is the main Web site (www.canardzone.com) and NOT these forums. There are two different softwares at work here, and the forums has and will not change. The forum will not be changed to prevent access by anyone. The Canard Zone Web site is a problem unless browsing with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher. The issue here is that I donated time and money to make the www.canardzone.com Web site happen. It has been optional viewing, perhaps until now. ON-TOPIC Replies I put this on the list of things to pursue. How is a 'Just Getting Started' section? Is that what you mean? Depending on the improvement, it should either go under skunkworks or perhaps a Modifications section closer to the type-specific tree. Without any moderators, we will all have to try harder with keeping to topic. This is a worthwhile consideration, but realize that it requires that we allow moderators to do this and whatever else they're enabled to do by vBulletin with the 'Moderator' privilege. This could result in a problem that's worse than the original. Given our relatively small membership, I am against this for right now, but it is on the list of considerations. Yes, very good to use 'sticky' threads where appropriate. They are not used here presently. I will include on the list. We are talking about the www.canardzone.com Web site, and not the forums as powered by vBulletin. Less-than-ON TOPIC Replies Were you forced to turn on your computer or did you choose to? With the options available today, you do not need to use anything Microsoft, but be prepared to pay AT LEAST triple in money and time. I cannot figure this one out Jim; this should just not be. I will contact you in a separate e-mail on possible solutions. Every moment of my working life is building corporate Web applications. My deployments consist of 1,000-10,000 domestic and international users at a pop, sometimes on multiple continents speaking different languages. I am keenly aware of the standards of technology at large, my customers, and that of 95% of my potential corporate customers -- they're all running Windows. Last I checked, Microsoft-based computers are unbelievably inexpensive ($350 @ Dell). If anyone would like to debate this topic on another thread, I will be happy to tear notions of 'Micro$oft' as villian or Linux as an ROI advantage to shreds. Everyone, I will continue to work to get the www.canardzone.com Web site viewable for those that do not use Internet Explorer. This will take some further investment on my part, so right now you have the choice of using IE to see the content over there.
  11. The www.canardzone.com site is new and improved, but unfortunately only Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 5.5 or higher is supported. IE 5.0 also works, but not gracefully. The reason for this is that I am using a Web development tool built by Brickhouse Software that is tuned for Microsoft-based sites/intranets. We are aware of this limitation and can offer the following options: 1) Wait until Brickhouse enhances the tool/site (www.canardzone.com) to support non-Microsoft browsers. This will take time and money. 2) Install/upgrade to Internet Explorer Version 6.0 for FREE. 3) Do not view the site. My recommendation would be to upgrade to IE 6.0. Unless you're running Linux, you should already have a version of IE installed. Personally, with the integration of Windows+IE+Office, I wouldn't consider anything else for my own use at this point. I'd be happy to continue this discussion in a separate thread if you like.
  12. I am planning on making some improvements to the structure of the forum categories in the coming weeks. We need to get ourselves out of the Coffee House and posting into relevant areas of the forum. This is the only way to build a useful knowledge base. I put together a proposed hierarchy which can be viewed here. Please review and send me your comments so that I may incorporate into the plan. Note that no thread or message will be lost with this activity -- all posts will be moved into the new hierarchy. I would also like to use this time as an opportunity to put some sheen on the look and feel of these forums with some enhanced graphics, etc., yet keeping it 'down-to-business'.
  13. I was surfing recently joined members and noticed member named PaulL. His Web site is: http://www.abri.com/sq2000/
  14. This setting is so that thoughts don't change over time, and not to inconvenience anyone. I hope to have this issue resolved shortly. In the meantime, I will set the e-mail to send directly to my address.
  15. Spirit, welcome to the club -- you're in. Personally, I found buying the plans just another step to my affirmation to build. The next step was reading them and updating with newsletter changes and updates. The next is planning. When it warms I will finally be building, and faced with 1,000 more steps. This does seem to happen here much more than on the COZY mailing list. Being the admin here, it does concern me. I am in the process of putting some guidelines together which will hopefully help. The other thought I have is to create a discussion area which can only be accessed by 'senior' members, which would be monitored for abuse by a couple moderators (but don't ask me to define 'senior' right now). At present, not a single message is moderated, as is evident from some of the messages you see. Everyone, please write your e-mails knowing that you will someday meet the person on the other end. Write as though you're talking to them in person, and that in reality, they are not your 'arch enemy'. This has certainly been done, but not too often. Topics of doors and canopy raise good discussion and I'm sure someone will chime in here with additional info. Welcome again!
  16. The focus is on sport plane and ultralight aircraft (which also includes balloons). However, I did check the October 2003 issue and found a small article referencing Nat Puffer about wetting out your layups. Next to the article was the 'cowboy dude' from the plans.
  17. Don't forget this one, with counter rotating props: Ruben and Carlos Leon's Cozy MKIV
  18. I know of these: Custom Planes Kit Planes EAA Sport Aviation EAA Experimenter
  19. I fixed the problem. Everyone can feel comfortable with suggesting improvements to the forum.
  20. I was not aware the definition for 'canard aircraft' was so specific. I wonder if the designer of the planes with canard wings in the attached picture requires a similar education. BTW, one of the planes is the Triumph Business Jet, by Scaled, a similar design to that of the Avanti.
  21. I understand that 'canard' refers to a forward wing contributing to up/down control. The plane as a whole does not need to look like a Long-EZ to be considered a canard aircraft. In other words, any plane that has any sort of canard wing in the front can be considered a canard aircraft. Here's a link to the Piaggio Avanti: http://www.piaggioamerica.com
  22. Outbound e-mail notification is now fully operational. -Jon
  23. Check out these builder sites: http://vonsquid.com/sq2000/index.htm http://www.abri.com/sq2000 The SQ2000 building process strikes me as being built from the outside-in compared to Cozy plans. Jon
  24. Presently, any outbound e-mail coming from the Canard Zone server has been disabled. This includes a variety of features, such as: 1) subscribed forum notifications 2) lost password retrieval 3) private message notification This will be corrected within the next day or two. If you need your password reset, send me an e-mail directly at jonmatcho@gmail.com and I'll have it reset so you can get back in and change it to what you like. No passwords have been lost or changed. Jon
  25. I was considering the SQ2000 before I purchased Cozy plans. Factors for me became: 1) It's a kit -- will they be around (KLS is already 2nd owner, I think) 2) Limited builders out there I didn't have the guts. However, at first glance it looks like a very interesting plane. I saw a SQ2000 builder site last night who had very detailed pictures and narrative, better than most Cozy builder sites. You could tell the construction is rather different than that for a Cozy, but keeping with the moldless composite technique. I say "go for it" if you can buy the entire kit upfront. We can setup a SQ2000-specific section here and can solicit additional SQ2000 builders. Jon
