I am seriously considering making my seatback (only) 3 inches wider. I've considered all of the past discussions (Wider in Albq), etc; I know I'm test pilot doing something new that may affect the... The CG Strakes give me elbow room but I need it at the shoulders (upper arms). I'm about 22 inches where my shoulders and upper arms come into contact with the canopy latch rod & longeron while Jan is about 19 inches at her similar point. This leaves us cramped into the 39.5 inches of width at that point. A 3 inch width extension should allow us enough room for comfort (still Cozy) while minimizing any undue negative effects. Jan asked about the staggered seating (ala Steve Wright's StaggerEZ) but definitly wants rudder pedals. I plan on leaving the control tubes, etc in the same location, so the only building difference is in the width of the seatback and the changes in Chapter 5 (the fuselage sides). So I'm basically trying to figure out what I need to be prepared to look at in Chapter 5. My questions are: 1) is the shipped longeron long enough? It should be only a moderate addition to that length to fit the arc. If not can I just add more to an end (structurally is that ok) or do I need to order new and longer longerons (the chapter 5 order is sitting in the shop)? 2) Where does the seatback fit into the arc of the side construction? I'm also planning on moving the seatback an inch so I would need to mod this anyway. Thanks - big flame suit on (why isn't there a flame Smily?) Bob

I've updated a picture gallery on one of my web sites with pictures that I took of Lloyd Gimple's Cozy. He was kind enough to let me and Jan come down and visit him in Albuquerque, NM to check out his plane. A short drive down from Santa Fe and we were both drooling in his hanger. Lloyd spent a very patient four hours going over his bird and showing us different things. This was the first time we really had an opportunity to look a Cozy over or sit in one. We were both grateful and excited for the opportunity. The first set of pictures was taken during this visit. A few weeks later he had his bird down for an annual and invited us back to help with shimming one of his wings. It was great seeing the guts of the Cozy and how the basic pieces fit together. The second set of pictures was taken during this visit. Both visits gave us the opportunity to see and touch something tangible when all we've really seen were 2 dimensional plans. There's also been a fairly good discussion of this on the other forum as well ( canardaviation forum). I have limited resources like dollars, space, etc, so ordering by the chapter as I need stuff makes sense for what my limitations are. If I had the room and the dollars, I'd buy it all at once. Of course that's some what misleading since I think I'd spread out the limited shelf life items like the epoxy to as I needed it. Either way you can't go wrong. I just ordered Chapter 4 & 5 this past Monday from Wicks. Of course I also ordered epoxy, hardner, gloves, stirring sticks, mixing cups, etc. Then there was the Fein sander, etc. I already ordered and received the Dritz scissors when I found they were going out of production several months ago. I had an epoxy pump from a Christmas present years ago and now hope to be able to use it SOON! If you order the hole enchilda just make sure you have a safe, dry and clean place to store the foam, glass, etc until you need them. Have fun!!!!! Bob

Hi! I too was getting ready to build the Open-EZ/LimoEZ/TonyEZ But after talking with my wife we decided to stick with our Cozy plans. There is another Cozy being built in Albq and a little south of you in Mid-Valley (Los Lunas) is a Vari-EZ builder/owner (Jack Hickman). He had just got done teaching a composite workshop (which I unfortuantely missed) for the local EAA Chapter. Mid Valley also had an Open Hanger that was fun 2 weeks ago. My question is on many of the web sites I see the chapter 4 order also include a misc. parts order. Other than epoxy, latex gloves, stirring sticks, & cups what will I need beyond the Chapter 4 kit? I already have 'the pump' and the Dritz scissors and of course a bunch of rivet/metal working tools My mod plans are Front hinged front canopy, da big hatch, mazada engine (non-turbo), front seat moved back 1", thinking of the 4" wide'r' mod, Cozy Girrl strakes, Cozy Girrls IP mod with 1" more room for the BMA's and JD retracts w/ small fuel sump/tank in the hell hole. What are the mods to your aircraft, besides the long nose? What makes it different from the OpenEZ project?

The rudder plans are on the TERF CD, so if you pick that up you'll have the rudder plans as well. [NOTE: The TERF CD has no templates] I believe the original rudder was a much smaller surface area than the larger rudder plans. The larger rudder is similar to what you'd see on the Cozy etc. There may be inof on that set of plans as well, just haven't gotten around to reading them yet.

So you wouldn't wan to use Long-EZ wings on a MK IV but what about the other way around. Is there a down side to using a Cozy wing on the Long? Would it allow a higher gross weight? Bob

IT - well... I've been in IT for mumble, mumble years. I've done most to the roles, programmer, sysadmin, user support, systems analyst, network admin, manager, grunt, etc. I too was in Dallas at the end of the internet boom and had to shuffle jobs as one company after another folded. If you're doing direct support you're probably ok, but the programming jobs and any other that can be made to fit are moving overseas at an alarming rate. I thought about getting out of IT and into healthcare but spending all of those mumble, mumble years in IT makes the payback unlikely especially consdiering I'd have to quit working for while to go back to college for another degree. The IT jobs aren't bad and you can find them. It's just that the market is not as stable as it once was (like everything else I guess). Keep your eyes and ears open and your resume & skills updated.

Wicks shows the materials kit(s) at about $4700. The Cozy kit is about 3x's that. If figure engine and instruments to be roughly the same. I tried to find out if the Long-EZ kit included everything needed to build, minus the engine, instruments, interior, etc (a la Cozy) but the response to that question left me scratching my head... I really like the way the canopy sets on the fuselage. Instead of looking like the canopy is too small for the airframe it looks like a totally integrated fuse. I also like the rear window instead of our small porthole. It would appear from the picture that there is some internal bracing from the seatback forward. Perhaps the rear longerons are in their original position and the front is lowered (with support of the extra bracing). Any ideas? Bob

Wow - why didn't I find this thread earlier? Count me in on anything I can do to help. I have a set of Cozy Mk IV plans laying around that I was thinking about starting soon. I'd be tempted to start the LongEZ first! Keep up the great work and you won't have to twist my arm for help. I've been playing with modifying the Cozy fuse like ShaleDC in Rhino and have been working on my own. He's definitly way ahead of me, I'm still learning the software!
