  1. I think there is a problem with how fast the new post get rolled into the individual catagories. Last week I posted at about 2:00pm and it rolled out before 5:00pm That means it only stayed on the new post menu for 3 hours, maybe less. In this regard I don't know what I might be missing from other posters if they roll out that fast.
  2. On top of each column of empty weights is the plane designation, Long EZ, Vari EZ, Cozy etc. Did they not show up on your sheet?
  3. I forgot to mention, include any information you feel would be useful. Rick
  4. Attached are the results of the survey mentioned in an earlier post. This will be ongoing. If you have a flying canard and know your empty weights, you can contribute any time, Contact me at rglos721@comcast.net Canard Weights.xls

Mfryer I did not get your message Try rglos721@comcast.net
  6. Earlier I posted on another forum, a messsage calling for a survey of canard empty weights. The result was that information started pouring in. The initial information is really astounding and the results will be posted but I need a larger profile. This is what I need. Type of plane, Vari, Long, Cozy. E racer etc. Empty weight, Engine and any comments on how its decked out, nose lift, long nose, electric trim, battery size etc, anything that adds to the overall weight. I have lots of Long EZ's and a few vari EZ's reporting in. Unfortunately no Cozy's or any kind or other canards. If you have any of these planes I could use your data. The idea is not to draw any scientific conclusions but to gather a comparitive data base to see where you stand or if your building, what to add to your plane. It doesn't take that much time. Send me an e-mail to rglos721@yahoo.com or rglos721@comcast.net

I tried this before and will try again. I am looking for a set of templates that came with the Long EZ plans for the aluminum engine baffles on the O-235 I would be happy to pay for copy, mail or any other expenses.
  8. What do you need a hanger for at Mojave? It never rains, and is never cold. All you should need is a couple of gallons of Coppertone instead of wax.

    Engine Baffles

I am going to rebuild my engine baffles and am looking for for a copy of the original drawings. I have the standard, not the sport flight cowls I park outside and it is a little too cold to be tearing into the engine just now. I could wait until spring and copy the existing ones but I am looking for a winter project to get done before the spring. I would appreciate any help I could get. Even if all you have is tracings of the original drawings. I could not find them on the open EZ drawings Rick rglos721@comcast.net
  10. Keith Where did you get your information? I have parked outside now in the Chicago area since 1986. Rain, snow, temps from -14 to 104f Heat build up in the canopy? Never measured it. Cracked and crazed canopy, zero evidence. Outgasing on the inside with a thin film. Must be every thin. Metallic joints corroding, they should but hav'nt yet. Gritty paste, nothing the rain doesn't wash off or a good coat of wax can take care of. I'm on a limited budget being retired so I try to keep things as nice as I can all things considered. A months rent on hangars would buy me nearly 80 gallons of fuel. That being said check out the pictures and you can still see a little shine on the paint.
  11. I'm not exactly sure of this but based on others construction photos, the main gear is wider on the Cozy IV due to the wider fuse. That being said is the wingspan longer because of the extra fuse width or are the wings the same and just sticks out further from the centerline?
  12. Rick, We probably did talk at one time or another. Florida is a long way from Komo up in Minn,Minn. What are you doing down there now. Anyhow thanks for the compliments. Rick Glos
  13. Wow, Hatswitch, good storyteller. But the moral is a little heavy on Chairboy. Chairboy, their is nothing wrong with your idea. Maybe the consensus goes the other way but that is another thing. My bet is that he already has read these posts. Several posters work for him. They are not spys but interested employees & are like us . So mission probably accomplished. I can't believe he is the type of person who would send down a team of lawyers if he objected. He would probably have someone raise his objections in a civilized manner. After all he is pro-homebuilding deep down. In this case no news is good news. Build your "Chairboy EZ" and make your dream come true.

  15. And then what happens if he says no. Is it then so simple as to proceed without the yes. I am for the Open Project. Not so sure what is gained trying to get an answer that we already know, or worse get set back. He has already said, as I understand it, do what you want just don't call it a Long EZ or associate it with him. If you want a real answer get a legal opinion
  16. I think what everyone is trying to tell you is that you don't change the CG box That dangerous unless your an aero engineer. The wing/canard relationship does not change or should not change by adding a bigger engine. To keep things in the box, the added weight is offset by either adding weight to the front or shift the weight up front. The most popular convention has been to make the nose longer so the battery weight can bemoved further forward.. The canard position does not change, the nosewheel stuff does not change and the wing does not change. It's the easiest solution. Go past this and I think you have to start playing with the relationship between cg and center of lift. I am a heavy pilot. I could put the bigger engine in and probably not have to change anything to stay in the box.
  17. This will work. I think you can even make it simpler. Find the station for the engine put it on the W & B sheet and put in the "difference" between the new engine and the old. It will be the same as if you added a starter after the original calculations. The engine station should be somewhere near 140-145 but verify this.
  18. I am now currently retired. I was Vice President Sales/ North America for Heidenhain Corporation, a German manufacturer of very precise rotary and linear encoders, CNC platforms, and ultra precise gaging. I served on the ASME Standards Committie, B5-54, TC 56 Information technology on machine tools, B5-54 Standards for Machine Tool Accuracy. These committies wrote the standards on how machine tool performance is defined. I was also the special projects liason between the company and our National Institute of Standards and Technology. Member, American Society of Precision Engineers Member, ASME. I also consulted on precision measuring systems in the field of Astronomy, both optical and radio platforms, primary and instrument package axis postioning.
  19. Good Question. I have had my exhaust on now for 20 years and it hasnever leaked at the slip joint. I guess it has something to do to least resistance. Why try to squeeeeeze past a joint when there is a big pipe to go through. My gues is that it would not even try unless there was some back pressure like a muffler or something.
  20. This happened at the airport for the capital city of the Hounduras. My guess is that after he landed he taxied off the primary runway ( or was told to) just to clear the runway. I checked itout on Google Earth and there is only one runway. If he sits there, the next plane could have been commercial. Afif, is this close? When I did mine I scrubbed of a patch only about 3x5 inches and the small aluminum plate on the strut. Rick
  21. This is about the most damage I've seen on a gear up landing It is from our friend in the Honduras. Afif Saybee He is open to suggestions or help Saybe Engineering [saybeengineering@hughes.net]
  22. Mixing slurry which is white micro usually comes out lighter in color. Heavy epoxy is a definate possibility. Epoxies also darken when exposed to the sun or when curred in the sun. This is a no-no. Ez poxy that is old is darker in color but I don't know if it effects the strength. I had some two year old ez poxy that was very dark, the same color you have but it cured up just fine. But I was using it to patch up some household items, not on the plane. Other than that , the tub looks fine
  23. Doc You will have to give up some more details ie static rpm on the ground, empty weight, all up weight, what altitude you were flying from etc. I have an O-235 L2C with a Great American 62x62. I get 2450 on the ground and about 2800rpm top. I just had a total engine overhall andhave been breaking it in. On an overcast day at 3000 ft, I firewalled the throttle and topped out at just about 153Kts at just about 2750rpm. The plane weighs 860 lbs empty, I weight 240 and I had about 180 Lbs of fuel on board. I haven't watched the climb with two on board recently but my guess would be something above 700 fpm. On another forum, this was very typical to three or four similar Long EZ's running the same prop. There was also some that were a little slower in the 130 to 140Kt range. For normal flying and to consere fuel, I usually fly around 130 kts. The plane is 20 years old Rick I hope this is a good comparrison for you.
  24. Rich has made some excellent points. On my Long EZ ( 20 years outside ) I remove the wing bolts every other year for inspection. And every other year-nothing to report. I never have even had to wire brush them. That is not to say that the bolts on this Long will be the same. It's an easy study. Remove the bolts one at a time and look at them. You say that this craft has been grounded. That should mean it was flying at one time and therefore has paint over the glass and epoxy. If this is so the structure should not be in bad shape. San Diego? How close to the salt air? Your may notice a different by checking the bolts on the engine mount and linkage attachemnts under the cowl. If these are not rusty or just mildly rusty, you should expect the rest of the hardware to be the same.
  25. Thanks Rich The Dragonfly was one of my first building choices but I finally wound up with a Long EZ and I'm happy with with it. Just finished some paint touch up over an Imron original coat. It was suggested I use a single part paint and they recommended DuPont Centari. It went on great and was nearly a perfect match. Rick
