  1. Added acouple more pics...foil is to ensure nothing makes camp in the wing while it is stored. Be safe! Sully
  2. Hi All, I just got my EZ placed in deep storage for my trip to Afghanistan this winter. I thought I would do a mock up of some of my parts for some motivational pics while I am gone. Not shown is the winglets, wheel pants, belly brake and some various items I still have to finish and fit. As you can see I still have to fit the canard to the fuselage (the strap was because it was quite windy today and I did not want my canards first flight to be a belly flop in the storage yard. I think the workmanship is quite good but still need to QC all the dimensions and hardware as well as finish all. It was nice to get it mounted on the gear and temp mount the canaopy for the pics. I am motivated and a little sad I can't get to it for another year or so. Waiters web site keeps me motivated...that winter retrofit is quickly becoming one of the nicest EZ's I have seen. Nice job Waiter. I hope to swing by for a visit on the way to Oskosh in 2008! I have been researching the plans intently. Picked up another set on E-bay as the plans that came with it are a littled chewed up. The new plans have the registration form and are complete (I think the registration form is useless as far as RAF goes?!?) I am still working out the finishing between the wing and strake...best as I can tell it is just a non structural filler...I have seen people use foam and shape...is this acceptable? Anyway I was pretty excited to see it mocked up...and real happy my wife was excited as well...she even jumped in the GIB slot for a couple of pics. I will post some higher quality pics when I get this whole upload thing started...I was also going to start up a web page for the long as well as some pics of our OPS in Afghanistan (few of those as most ops are at night). I was thinking some of you guys might be interested to see what your 8 million in tax dollors gets you in a Blackhawk. I already have a terra digital navcom ILS/VOR/ etc, GEM engine monitor, digital oil P/T, digital tach, standby 2 1/4" AS / VSI / ALT and some other goodies. Will install 2 1/4" electric ADI and primary EFIS D-100 (that is nice, split screen etc all for $2500 and 7" display or $5000 with the engine monitor!) Will it all fit? I did a mock up and it is a tight squeeze but with the full $5000 package I can chunk 4 inst. I was thinking of a heated nose mounted pito as well since mild IFR will be a definite. I digress. Thanks for the support, any comments welcome. Waiter I would like to send you some detailed pics so you can give me a heads up on the overall project. Thanks guys. I will be in touch, Sully PS It has the old canard...is the RONC canard a must as I read you can put vortilons on the old style for the moisture problem and how do you guys think I stand on the 51% rule?? I still need to do all electrical and flight control rigging as well as engine, finishing etc. Be safe.
  3. Thanks Waiter, first a trip to Afghanistan, then next year I will get crackin on it. Still gotta join EAA and CSA as it seems to be highly recommended by RAF for builders support. As you know if you have a registered build they will add you to the CP list and answer question for you when they can but they lean towards EAA and CSA for the hands on stuff. I will post some pics next week! Thanks again
  4. Thanks Jon, In all the excitement I tacked on the extra E. I found it listed on Barnstormers and the listing was 50 minutes old, immediatly called and drove the next day with checkbook in hand. I lucked out since the Army had me in Alabama for some courses and that happened to place w/in a few hours drive of the location. The owner was kind enough to hold it for thirty days untill I could grab it with a moving truck on my way back to NY. I will take some pics and post them when I do the inventory next week. The other parts I found on Barnstormers as well and same deal called w/in hours of the add and secured them, picked them up in PA on my drive back. Again another great guy that held them for a month. I have to do another one year hop in Afghanistan so I will probably get started next summer. Thanks again Sully.
  5. I found my project! Long-Eze with main wings, canard (orig), fuselage, strakes gear (main and nose), canopy (2 one custom built other featherlight) inst panel started as well as flight controls all in final layup ready for assembly and finish. Still have to mount winglets and a lot of wiring, sanding, painting, rigging etc. My guess is 50 -65 % complete. Also found O-235 engine cowl (featherlite) as well as NACA duct, wheel pants assorted fairings and aluminum spinner. Full set of plans I & II (transnfering registration with RAF for CP notification) as well as backup plans section I, II. Planning on a O-235 Lyc or possibly a Franklin O-235 if it can be done! Thanks Norris!

  7. Hi, I shot you an e-mail with a contact for the VEZE mount. Hope you got it, if not let me know and I will send it again. Good Luck!, Sully
  8. levansic Thanks for the response and I will look into that. Seems it is quiet in the NE USA and all the canards are in the SW USA. Good luck on the build! I will see you around, be safe, Sully
  9. I cant help you with building it but your mount is on ebay for 99.00 with no bidders. Good luck. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=26437&item=4535073085&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
  10. I am sure the guy who lost his canard on his Varieze in California (NTSB)would have liked one...overestressing the airplane and flight into moderate to severe turb should have got him thinking. The Long-Eze who lost his wings due to over tqe on the attatchment bolts probably would have liked it too(NTSB)...I guess if you did not build it yourself it would be good insurance against cato failure...if it is well built then we have to look no further than Dick Rutan who flies a rocket eze in testing without a BRS. Just the same if you are interested the NOAA has an Eze with a BRS http://www.noaa.inel.gov/Capabiliti...wnersManual.pdf EMERGENCY PARACHUTE During NOAA research missions, N3R also carries a model BRS5C 1200 ballistic parachute recovery system (BRS) which is tied to the airframe to allow safe recovery of the pilot, aircraft and instruments in an emergency. The solid rocket, which deploys the chute, is activated by pulling a handle located above the pilots right shoulder. When activated, the rocket accelerates to 150 feet per second within the first 0.1 seconds ripping through a "blow out patch". In the follow on 0.8 seconds, the rocket extracts the parachute and stretches tight its lines and the airframe harness attachments. FAA certified tests have shown that full parachute inflation occurs as low as 300 feet above the ground. Actual "saves" have occurred below 150 feet. Once under canopy, the rate of descent will be around 15 feet per second. When stabilized, the aircraft will descend in a flight level attitude with the nose slightly lower than the tail. On reaching the ground, the nosewheel will generally touch down first. Fortunately, we have never needed this safety system. However, as of June 1999, 127 lives were spared by actual use in other aircraft. The chute canister bolts to the forward face of the center section spar. Just above the canister is a 34 CAUTION! We have no experience with N3R’s BRS. Limit use to catastrophic emergencies where the cost of the aircraft is not the main concern. Obviously, if you can land successfully, this should be your choice. A BRS system is an option of last resort. thin fiberglass "blow-out" patch consisting of 3 oz fiberglass to allow the chute to exit. The chute is tied to the airframe with a three-point Kevlar harness. One strap ties around the fiberglass gear bow. The other strap runs through the strake and around front of the pilot seat- back. The strap lengths are such that the aircraft would come down in a level attitude. Some deployment scenarios for using the BRS could include: ºCatastrophic airframe failure (mid-air collision) ºEngine failure at night or over inhospitable terrain ºPilot incapacitation, and ºAnytime massive deceleration is needed. The idea of the parachute is to reduce forward speed and create a survivable vertical impact with the ground. Before chute deployment, airspeed should be traded for altitude and the propeller stopped turning. To deploy, one must pull the activating handle - hard! Before touchdown, The nose gear should be extended and electrical and fuel systems cutoff. For additional information on the use see the BRS, Inc.web page at Html://www.airplaneparachutes.com/index.html.
  11. All conditions considered as well as flying Long-Eze. Will entertain all situations and if it looks good will travel for inspection. Plans considered in any condition. Thanks in advance.
  12. Hi all, Just joined and am interested in getting to know more about the LEZ/VEZ as I want to build/buy. If anyone is interested I will pay for fuel and a burger for a flight or a burger for a walk around and familiarization/orientation. Military Instructor Pilot with 3200 hours in UH-60’s Helos and 200 FW. I want to work on this project in between OEF/OIF rotations and would like to know inspection criteria for purchase as well as basic flight characteristics. The posts are interesting to say the least...lots of info! I am active duty in upstate New York by Watertown and will drive w/in 4-5 hours. Any canard would be great for the Fam/Orient. Be Safe. Thanks in advance! Sully. P.S. If anyone knows of someone who gives duel instruction in canards (esp. LEZ/VEZ) please let me know.
  13. I have flown Helo's in moderate to severe icing and I can tell you electric systems are anti-ice...and fixed wing boots should be used the same way as anti ice. You should have the hot stuff on way before you encounter it. It is a little freaky standing on the ground and looking at an H-60 with huge junks of ice dropping off the airframe. No matter what system you develop in the world of the "Super Canard" I think the important thing to remember is the prop location and FOD from shedding ice...as the tractor or twin conventional is not at great risk of FOD on the prop from ice shedding. In the case of heated rotor blades and tail rotors if a de-ice fail light illuminates you shut down the system and exit the conditions ASAP. Think of the imbalance a canard would have if the de-ice process did not work equally across the airfoil. I would have to agree with the opinion to stay away and having the system would temp you to go into trace or light and encounter moderate or severe. I have had to fly in it due to mission constraints but otherwise...not so much.
  14. http://mysite.verizon.net/res7yblj/id2.html He is on this forum, very exp, and willing to communicate and help. Check it out and give him a shout. Good Luck.
  15. I just re-read all the AD info from RAF on this subject. I see it could be a simple fix or a nightmare that could involve total reconstruction. Could be why that VEZ is a great deal. Anyone have any experiance with this WAF issue? Thanks
  16. Hi, I was wondering how big a job it would be to replace the wing attatchment fittings on a veri and does anyone know if you have to make the wings fixed IAW the reccomendation on the AD from RAF. I am new to this but saw a vari at a good price requiring this work to fly again. Thanks in advance! Sully
  17. All makes sense...I was wondering how to pull it off if the workmanship is vg. It would be possible to buy a dinged EZ and use this as a great platform to start with legit paperwork for a rebuild of the plane. Seems like so many other ads the bait is on the hook but the fisherman has gone away. Thanks waiter for the heads up...nice webpage and nice EZ! adouglas thanks as well and I copied all on the first dibs...you are number one in the pattern Thanks again.
  18. I am interested but unsure how one would proceed? Would you buy another set of plans and start from that with completing the build and certification? I am new to this stuff and have recently jump started an old interest in buying/building an EZ. Thanks
