  1. Hello, I needed to know the approximate length of a wing. Let's assume the winglet is not attached. Of all the parts in the plane is the wing the longest? The reason I ask is that I need to take the appropriate enclosed trailer length. As the trailer gets larger so does the pulling requirement. This is also relevant in regard to the distance that the trailer will be pulled. One last thing, is this the longest broadest component I will need to accomodate? The project has a tub but the spar is not mounted. The wings and canard have been skinned but that's about it. The turtleback and canopy are also done, but not mounted. Thanks, Nathan
  2. No, David doesn't have a website. You tell him basically what your looking for, aircraft type and price and he'll send you a word document containing the various AC he has that match up. Some have already been sold some have moved. He can also broker a deal if you want. If you purchase a plane through him he charges 3% fee. I don't believe it cost anything to sell through him. canardfinder@worldnet.att.net
  3. In addition to David Orr, I would also recomend posting in the following: www.ez.org www.tradeaplane email Terry Schubert and post in the CSA and of course the Cozy newsletter.
  4. >quoted you through out most of his site. The only problem is he >thinks your name is Ken Garden. Send me the link. I'll rip him to shreds. http://www.lucubration.com/cozy/mods.html It's a nice website. >Your name is John Slade correct, or is that just your Cozy alias? I get this question from a guy called "noodles"?????? The nickname is a derrivative of my last name. It's always been there since kindergarden.
  5. John, I meant that in the nicest possible way. Your site is the best. I would pay to continue reading your worldly tales of Cozy building. Here is a funny side note, I stumbled upon a builders website who had quoted you through out most of his site. The only problem is he thinks your name is Ken Garden. Your name is John Slade correct, or is that just your Cozy alias?
  6. Yes, I did attempt to use the email but received no reply. I may try again. David Orr, Good idea I will probably send something off to him and see if I can get some info. I guess I would also like to know that someone is still actively supporting the equipment. It would be nice if it could be purchased through Velocity or Aerocanard. Either way about it I’m tempted to pick up a video or do some additional research. I’ve attempted to post David’s article but it doesn’t seem to be working. I’ll try it one more time. It's still not working. I'll post it in in a new thread. I believe that David originally wrote this for a CSA article, it was written in 1996 and is a little dated. It provides some interesting background on the subject of retracts and where they have come from David has a complete library of articles and support literature regarding anything canard. He has a system for Xeroxing and checking out documents. He has an index for his library and may be persuaded to send it out. His email is located in the link section of John’s Monty Python does Cozy building website. He goes by his nickname, which is Beagle. David Orr [canardfinder@worldnet.att.net] John, to answer you question about my project. I will picking it up over the 4th of July weekend. The current owner is located in Knoxville, TN. I have already sent my deposit and talked to Jeff and was given the go ahead by him and David. It’s about 1000 miles each way so I’ll probably use 3-4 days to retrieve it.
  7. Do you know who the contact person for purchasing the retracts? I'm guessing Scott Swing? You wouldn't happen to have his contact info? I would like to purchase the video they have and compare with Infinity. I heard it was a decent system, it's obviously less expensive than Infinity. The cost of the Infinity system is probably tied up in the Oleo struts and such. David Orr sent me a decent word document detailing the pros and cons of several systems. Give me a holler if you want it.
  8. No that’s not why he died. If you have access to the CSA newsletters and old CP articles, Steve Drybread is referenced throughout them and is well regarded as a knowledgeable canard builder. He died via a canard departure. It’s a long story but the condensed version is that he was distracted with a phone call and a customer who inadvertently tipped the Berkut back on the prop. The bolts that retain the canard hadn’t been reinstalled. After replacing the broken prop he hauled out of there. The retaining pins sheared and the canard departed. I’ve heard that his wife might be attempting to sell them through one of the co developers.
  9. Before his demise, this was Steve's retract kit. http://www.geocities.com/ezrg/
  10. Hello, This is a great website. I think it would be even better if we had the various canard archives in it or linked to it. Thanks, Nathan
  11. Alright, I was using the Rutan composite tutorial Moldless Composite Sandwich Homebuilt Aircraft Construction 3rd edition August 1983 composite kit from Wicks. Rutan, says to only use peel ply where necessary. He indicates that this adds unnecessary weight and should only be used when you are bonding two fiberglass components, because peel ply removes the shiny top layer. He states, “Another thing to remember is that peel ply adds weight. It fills the weave 100% with epoxy so it should only be used where it will serve its purpose of bonding of transitioning plies. Do not get carried away and peel ply any more than necessary.” Mr. Nat Puffer stated in his Cozy Newsletter #80 Jan. 2003 in his Weight Saving Column “Don’t add extra layers of glass and don’t use excess epoxy. Peel ply everythin and use a hair dryer when you squeegee, to remove excess epoxy.” I’m not trying to split hairs here but Rutan say peel ply only where necessary and Puffer say peel ply everything. So which one? Nathan,

  13. Hello, Is there a way to download the complete archive? Nathan
  14. Actually this individual just used the regular BID and epoxy. In the article he states that he had seen no degradation over two years. The author stated that the expense of carbon fiber was not justified in this installation. His was using a Subaru Legacy. It looked fairly simple and he also provided personal information if anyone wants to contact him. I highly recomend the Contact Books Vol 1 and Vol 2. They involve numerous auto coversions and provide detaile information in some of the articles.
  15. Hey John, How did those prefab runners work out for you? If your still having problems I have an article from Contact Magazine showing how to make composite intake manifolds from carbon fiber and epoxy. Aaron has also identified some high temp epoxy which you could use to enhance the composite part with for probable 13b temps. It would also be a significant reduction in weight. Nathan
  16. Seriously, here's an update I posted in homebuiltaircraft.com recently: [Nathan] www.homebuiltaircraft.com , this link isn’t working John. maybe add a P51 scoop here or there. [Nathan] You cold always do you runups without your cowling on. Nathan, >This seems like a lot of cash. Tracy's prices are usually very competitive. [Nathan] He’s also a fair individual, I just don’t know how those little gaskets add up to $500. I’ take your word on it for now. Getting stuff from Tracy ensure's that you're getting the right stuff for our purpose, and the more business we can all feed his way the better for all of us. The man just won't stop innovating. Which is why I plan on purchasing his kits and components, it’s like getting Paul Newman’s Salad dressing, you know the money is going to a good cause. Personally, I wouldn't even think about doing the rebuild myself unless I was a highly experienced mazda engineer. [Nathan] I always thought that was interesting about you John. I figure these things are idiot proof and if you can install an AC unit in a Cozy you can replace o-rings in a 13B. On the other hand if it takes me 2 years to complete this thing, it may be wise to consider the Renesis. Will see, I just don’t want to drop all my coins on the 13B just to see the new kid on the block with his Renesis. Sure, we can learn anything, but why bother (and spend the time) when you have an expert like Bruce Turrentine out there who'll do a superb job for a few k and let you get on with the airframe building stuff. [Nathan] What’s the average price for his services? Even Tracy Crook, who installed one of the first flying rotaries, got his new engine from Bruce. [Nathan] I haven’t talked to Tracy, but I would feel that this is a time issue not the lack of skill ”On top of that - a word of warning - installing a rotary is NOT an inexpensive proposition. Don't get into it if you're objective is saving up front cash. Maintenance cash, yes. Cash flow, yes because you don't have to plop for a large lump at once. Initial investment, no. By the time this sucker's running I will have more invested in it than I would have had in a low time LYC IO360.” [Nathan] This investment actual depends on how long you plan on having your plane. It’s not that great of an investment when you consider many folks don’t like seeing an “Auto engine” in the back of a perspective aircraft. If you fly your airplane long enough the maintenance cost you are avoiding will eventually pay for the engine, and the possibility that you may have to remove it some day to sell the plane. I know that many of us don’t plan on selling their planes, but this possibility has arisen with many builders. Either way, airplane engines are not for the feint of wallet. Think of the cost of a homebuilt this way - ”Airframe cost - one third Avionics cost - one third Engine cost - one third In the case of a Cozy, expect each to cost you around $15k.” [Nathan] This cold cruel fact has begun etching itself into my fun money plan. The first 20-30K can be justified the last 15K will be the big push. I’ve explained this to my girlfriend, and the fact that she may have to work an extra job to get me an EFIS/One. It might be time to trade the GTI in. ;( Is any of this tax deductable?
  17. Has anyone purchased the overhaul kits from Tracy's site. I noticed that it runs from 500-1000 for the basic and master packages. This seems like a lot of cash. Is this kit necesary? I would think that most of the components can be picked up at Autozone or some equivalent.
  18. Hello, I plan on attending Osh Kosh this year and wanted to know how many other folks plan on attending. Depending on how reservations go, my girlfriend and I will be camping out over the first weekend. We will fly in via commercial spam can to the Appelton airport and hitch a ride up to Osh Kosh. Nathan,

  21. Seems inexspensive for what you get. http://www.echoflight.com/order.html www.echoflight.com What is WAAS stand for?
  22. I've seen several sights with people carving there own blades. If you can build a plane with epoxy and cloth you can build a prop.
  23. You're a programmer right? That stuff should be a piece of cake for you. No really I feel bad, I probably delayed the launch of your Cozy by 2-3 hours. It starts to add up over 3 years of interuptions. [/b] Yes. A web site is best. You're going to need one anyway to document you're progress. A lot of peole will be interested in how you get on jumping into a partial project with no idea how to do this stuff. [/b] That will be interesting, I'll just get one of those little on line cams. You guys can watch me buff in the buff at 2:00 a.m.. :0
  24. ”Not only does this website SHOW you what the product looks like, it LISTS the website where you can FIND more information about the product.” That’s excellent. ”Remember to use the epanel website. I true gold mine. Those guys provide an invaluable service for us!!” Thanks, I kept glazing over the sight. It’s definitely an excellent compilation of what’s available on the market. It may be some time before I would need it. I enjoy gleaming information from the Cozy crowd. There landing light kit seems like it might be worthwhile? Have you personally used the Navaid? If so how does the smart coupler work into the picture?
