  1. I hadn't seen a posting for this and thought it might be useful for myself and others. What are the available autopilot systems. Best Bang for the Buck? Low end? High end? I ran into a site selling non certified autopilot systems. http://www.navaid-devices.com $1300 Can someone educate me on why this is a good or bad decision?
  2. I've talked to the owner and told him I would take it. David Orr needs to talk to the owner and then I'll drive up there and pick it up in June. I just sent you some files via email. I probably swamped your account. Actually, I'm sure I did. How do you post pics on this system. I see the HTTP string when I click image. I'm guessing I need a webpage, to point to?
  3. Alright, That cleared that up pretty quick. I figured the veterans of the group would know the right answer. Basically it's better to go manual, save your bones and buy the Jack Wilhelmson's unit when you can afford it. Thanks,
  4. I finally found that third nose gear retract system. www.kitaircraftparts.com The system is a kit and it cost $390.00. I wanted to know if anyone knows any specific information about this unit. Some people tend to be wary of less exspensive unit with any purchase. Is this a fair buy or is it going to be future headaches?
  5. --Congratulations! Welome to the fold.-- Yea, I'm was starting to feel left out. --Get her some knee pads so she can sand the underneath.-- Knowing her she won't think there for sanding. I'll tell her it was your idea. --That's Dr. Funk, actually. Pity you didnt get chance to chat - he's a VERY interesting guy. I sat opposite him at the Sun & Fun dinner.-- I wish I could of made it down, it sounds like you guys had a good time. When is the next shin dig you will attend? --You'll get that. You'll also get raised eyebrows at fly-ins when you show up with an airplane after 18 months, while everyone else who started at the same time as you is still sanding.-- 18 Months?, Hey I might catch up with you. I think I'm going to stick with the basics as far as equipment goes. I would like to get it airborne as rapidly as possible. My bank account seems far shallower than others. We'll see how next years tax's go. My girlfriend is hyped up now after seeing one up front. She also likes the idea of getting out of town more often. Texas is such a huge state that it's difficult to drive out on a weekend. Anyhow, I'm starting to ramble. I'll post a few pics of the the project, there are lot of completed pieces that need to be assembled. Do you have an idea of how well the aerocanard cowling will fit with the 13B? :D Congratulations! Welome to the fold.
  6. What are the available nose gear retracts available on the market? What are the available pro's and con's. I've seen these two, but there is a significant difference in the price. http://www.eznoselift.com/ $1400 http://www.canard.com/~noselift/ $1000 www.kitaircraftparts.com $390 Anyone have any suggestions?
  7. Cat's Meow Hello, I was able to get a good looks at Cat's Meow and Funks Cozy. He even let me get in side and make the vroom, vroom sounds. I didn't realize how tight it was inside. It's not bad but it is deffinetly a reality check. What's interesting is that Cat's Meow used a lot of the Aerocanard quick build parts. Speaking of which I went ahead and settled on the Cozy/Aero kit from a guy in TN. I will be attempting to pick it up in a few weekends. Anyone up for a roadtrip? I enjoyed talking to the owners. The wife told my girlfriend she better find herself a hobby. Ha Ha, Her new hobby will be sanding. Just what all young woman want to do on a crazy Friday night. I tried talking to Mr. Funk but he must have like 10 kids, at least that's what it seemed like. I really couldn't get any detailed questions out. He did say they are building a second Cozy for the family. He gave me the raised eyebrow when I said I was buying someones project. Oh well. I'm happy.

  9. Mr. Slade recomended I make the investment in a plane ticket and come up and help you create less parts.
  10. Thanks Cliff, I'm aware of the disconection between Aero and Cozy. I would like to try and take "sides" in this discussion. I just want to know the facts. "By the way, cutting out the wings with a hot wire saw was easy and simple. We have done 4 wings and 4 canards. VERY REWARDING to see the airfoil come to life as you remove the cut offs!! If you can't do this easy task, you probably should not be building." So if the wings are included in this project? I shouldn't finish it? Maybe I opened the wrong can of worms. I know that numbers indicate a majority of the plans purchased will never reach completion. I'm just trying to even up the odds.
  11. More than likely I am going to purchase a Cozy that has the full Aero canard quick build components. I've already talked to John about this and he has attempted to educate me about what I'm purchasing. What I would like is to see is helpful information that will guide me in completing my purchase. I've also talked to Jeff Russell about his part in this and wanted to get a third party's opinion. Aero canard=Cozy MKIV +(prefab parts) The reason an Aerocanard is not a Cozy is because, why? I'm assuming it's because there are "unauthorized" changes to the plans? If you deviate from the plans it's not a Cozy right? I've read many sets of builders logs and what I don't understand is how all of the Cozy builders can make minute to major modifications and still call their project a Cozy. Has Nat approved all of these changes? What if I build the Cozy and have the wings outsourced by Aerocanard, does that mean my plane is no longer a Cozy? It seems unfortunate to split hairs when the community is as small as it is. I've read a couple of the Rutan books and this problem was resolved differently. From what I understand he did everything he could to accommodate the changes builders made. Yes I know that you just can’t have builders making changes willy nilly, but at the same time why abandon your flock because the want air conditioning and retractable gearing. If I purchase the Aerocanard project am I going to be the redheaded canard stepchild? Will I be forced to park with the Velocities?
  12. He does a poor job of advertising, but he actually is the designated vendor for the CD.
  13. Has he posted his specs and price anywhere?
  14. I finally got a hold of Charlie. He said that he can do his direct drive because of how his prop is made. He didn't think there would be enough thrust to use it on anything larger than a Verieze. He was going to use twin subs on his Cozy but ended up changing to the 13b. He is going to use all of Tracy's gizmos.
  15. Yea, I'm not to sure about using an old or new transmission. I want something a little more meaty. I would hate to total out my plane because I forgot to shift or I missed a gear. The term reliability and transmission don't seem cohesive. I know a PSRU is actually a transmission, but It's designed to be in a aircraft, at least Tracy's Cooks is. It just seems more robust. Anyhow this guy has a small log attached to his flywheel. The log is made up of fiberglass and epoxy. It's probably a foot in diameter. I just don't understand how that circumvents the over reving problem. Outer or inner diameter on a fly wheel is still going to be too fast wouldn't it? The last CSA article quotes him as saying that everything is working just fine, he is knocking out 230 MPH. He also is also building a Cozy MKIV, and he has is making it into a twin drive. Each engine is sitting a little out from the centerline. He made composite mounts for those engines as well.
  16. I guess I've been a little spoiled by the quick responses in past. I read a post regarding people revealing personal information about others. The big issues being anonymity. I attributed the lack of response to the subject of that post. Probably jumped the gun a little. Some how this guy has put together a direct drive for his Suburu engine. I thought that was a rather unique solution that bypasses the old speed reduction unit. Since I'm a fan of the 13b engine I thought that it would be something that I could possible implement into the standard engine conversion.
  17. Apparently nobody has heard of him or they feel they may jepordize his privacy by putting me in touch with him. Anyhow I just want to know about the mods. I'll try to contact him through other resources. Thanks, Nathan
  18. Hello all, I’ve been digging through 2002 CSA’s articles and I’ve noticed Charlie Airesman has several articles on implementing his Subaru engine in his Verieze. On the January issue he indicated he was doing 230 mph with a normally aspirated engine. I was curious about the various modifications that he has made to it. I would like to know where I can get additional information on the following mods. I’m extremely curious on how he accomplished this changes and would like find a detailed story on the success of these mods. I’ve thought about emailing him, but I don’t want to intrude. Does any one know him? Maybe I could get an introduction from someone? The most important is how he came about using a “Direct Drive” on his Subu. Unless he is keeping his RPM’s low wouldn’t he end up over propping? His prop extension looks like a small log that is attached directly to his flywheel on his engine. No PSRU!!! Is this possible, if it is I would think the rotary guys would love to bypass the gearing. Foam and glass prop that he made in a mold. A detailed description of this process would be ideal Composite engine mounts. Has this been done before, are there significant difference between the two assemblies. Is there a way to do stress calcs on a glass engine mount? Thanks,

  20. Hate to say this, but I finally got a response from someone at Williams International about their little Turbofan. The fact that they arent doing so well with the Eclipse people probably had a bit to do with that though. My request was for some technical info on the EJ22 fan that they were working on, this is the reply I got: >Dear Mr. Jaeger, > >I'm sorry but we do not sell engines for non-FAA certified products. >(You can thank the trial lawyers). > >I suggest you find military surplus engines for that use. > >Regards, >RS So all of you that were hoping to see a turbofan in the experimental market (where it should be... imho), you'll have to keep your pants on for the mean time. -Ian
  21. San Antonio would be a nice trip to make. I subscribed to the CSA a little over a month ago. I also purchased last years CSA articles. They came in the mail along with the directory of local builders. I'm in the process of tracking down some of these builders. I called my designated state CSA representative but he is moving to Florida this weekend, go figure. I talked to his wife, I haven't talked to him personally yet. There are about 3-4 other houston builders that I need to email today. I will also email the San Antonio and Austin builders and find a good weekend to come up and do some work.
  22. Dennis Butler huh, I'm not familiar with his name. What is he doing know, building or a flying? I would like to meet up with someone local, and talk shop for awhile. Do you think he would be interested in humoring me for an hour or so. I think I can throw in a free $100 hamburger. I checked his profile and he has his email locked. I noticed that he doesn't make any contributions to this site yet. Does anyone know if he checks his mailbox here?
  23. Anyone know these guys? I'm heading out to EAA chapter 12's meeting tonight. I just noticed that there are a couple of members with rutan style ac, this will be my first meeting. Reitz, Richard has a completed Cozy 3 Lee, Allen has a Defiant project Barber, Christopher has a Velocity project Mollard, Norm Wesley has a Aerocanard project.
