  1. John is right. You will spend the next three or more years before you even need to start thinking about what engine you need. In that time there will be several more 13B's flying in Cozy's, probably some more Suburus too. And who knows what else. Get the airplane built before you worry about avionics and engines. Avionics should definitely be the LAST thing you do because with the flux in electronics and what the FAA might decommission over the years (decades), this is the area with the most potential for change. Unless, of course, you are going to put it tried and true steam guages. Enjoy
  2. What about putting the "Club" on the prop. If you miss that during preflight you deserve the damage that is done. Wait a minute - the theif might not notice though - hmmmmmm? Maybe a note on the IP reminding you and the theif to remove it.
  3. We're all going to be ready by Sun-n-Fun. It will just be different Sun-n-Funs
  4. Yes, the Cozy plans include all the full size drawings. A word of warning - there is some serious "friction" between Cozy Development Corp. (Nat) and Aerocad (Jeff). These two are always fighting about their "agreement". Aerocad sells plans for an Aerocanard, not a Cozy. Of course, the plans are based largely on the Cozy. I don't know what all the changes are and I'm not up on the support you would get from Aerocad but I have heard, second hand, that Jeff is a good guy. I do know the Cozy support is outstanding. Between all the websites by builders, the cozy builders mailing list, this forum, and Nat himself, you will have absolutely no problems getting a question answered. I have corresponded with Cozy builders from all over the world and have met many of them at fly-ins and the like. It is a great bunch of people with a lot of ideas (not all good of course I have never regretted choosing this plane and I am actually more and more happy about as I progress.
  5. I'm not sure why you think there is a hostility toward BRS from Cozy builders. I've never seen this. From what I've read, there are concerns about a BRS in general with Canards (all Canards) because of the speed and because the engine is in the back. It just opens a whole new set of issues to deal with for chute deployment. I don't really know anything about it myself. This is just my recollection of some past discussions I've read. If you want to add a BRS to your plane then that is your right and choice. Just, like all mods, do it thoughtfully and carefully and seek professional help where needed. And shame on Nat for telling you you're too tall and/or fat when he knows full well that he has builders/flyers that are at least 6' 3" tall. Also keep in mind that Nat is very closed minded when it comes to making any changes to the plans unless he has personally made the change (such as an electric nose lift). I understand where he is coming from but never ask Nat about making a change. BTW - where are you located? I'm sure you can find someone more than happy to let you sit in a Cozy.
  6. Well I've gotten MGS 335 from them in the past. I just checked the website and it appears they only have 285 on their site. Can't hurt to call anyway.
  7. Check out "The Composite Store" at http://www.cstsales.com/ They are in Tehachapi CA.
  8. I use a 10" bandsaw and it gets used a lot. There has been very very few times where a bigger saw would have been better. I used it to trim all the bulkheads in chapter 4. I use it to cut foam and aluminum. I use it to cut various wood blocks for jigs, etc. The 9" should be just fine, especially for $50. If it dies in a year, big deal, you got your monies worth. Just make sure you can get new blades for that model. If not, don't buy it.
  9. I made the decision to build a Cozy just days after I got my Private Pilots license. I flew some here and there at first. I even worked on my Instrument rating. After a while I started to get annoyed with spending $75 an hour for a C-172 knowing that in a few years I could fly my own plane for "free". I haven't flown in over a year now and it got me worried a bit. I let my medical lapse too. After some hard thought I've basically decided at this point that there is no point in flying just once in a while, the expense is worth it. I've decided to build full time (full spare time, that is), and when I'm about done I will spend some money to rent, get current, then seek out a willing Cozy pilot to check me out for a few hours, then fly my plane and no more renting. I'm glad I had my license first though. I'm very glad I did some Instrument training too. Both will give me better appreciation of what needs to be done, mostly with respect to the cockpit. If I was still single and not a new Dad, and had more money, I would certainly keep flying while building. But with my time and money, I can only do one - so building it is. I figure the longer it takes to build, the greater the chance it won't get finished. Good luck in your decision and building.
  10. Just curious about why the insides of the nose sides are carved the way they are. Why not just leave the inside flat? Is this to provide a little more space inside?
  11. I couldn't access that URL - is it correct?
  12. If I'm not mistaken, you still need your standard pitot tube and static port for EFIS/One.
  13. I'm a long way off for this but all this talk about hiding the canopy hinges left me thinking. Why use two, 10" length of hinge for the canopy? I presume you need that much to hold the canopy on, right? What about using two short pieces of hinge, enough so the canopy can open properly but small enough to be hidden. Then add a locking mechanism, similar to the pilot's side, on the passenger side. This way the canopy will be very secure but no visible hinges (or much less so). Somehow the two can be interconnected to avoid trying to open the canopy while the passenger side is locked down. Just an idea. Please feel free to agree or shoot it to hell.
  14. How about the Cozy Mailing List archive search engine at: http://www.maddyhome.com/cozysrch Rick
  15. I was talking with Nick about adding some more summary info to the main page when he reminded me of a useful feature I overlooked. To quickly see what is new when you first log in, click on the "View new posts" link just below the "Welcome <your name>". This will show all messages since you logged in last. After you read the ones you are interested in, click on the "Mark all forums read" link on the main page to clear the messages you didn't read - and probably don't want to. Works for me Rick
  16. Nick - the problem seems to be that the Control Panel doesn't understand Day Light Savings time. I selected Mountain time but it shows -7 hours from GMT. That is true in the winter and spring, not summer and fall. Right now MDT is -6. Rick
  17. I would like to announce a new service available to all canard builders, flyers, and suppliers. This service is called the Canard Pages and it is a web hosting service available for free. I'm sure many of you out there wish you could document the construction of your canard or provide pictures of your flying bird. There are several builders/flyers who also make parts available to others but have no easy way to provide a website. The Canard Pages give you a place to store your website for others to access. All you need to do is register, create your website using a tool such as Front Page, upload your files to this service, and then tell the world the URL to your new website. To visit the Canard Pages, go to http://www.maddyhome.com/canardpages Enjoy
