Drew
As a perspective Cozy IV builder, I have some questions that I've not been able to find a reliable answer. Usual "Rutan, blar, blar, blar. Long Ez waffle, waffle, wafffle, So Cozy IV, but........." Question 1 I'm 6'4", and would "like" a combined front seat weight of 450# Using Marx Zeitlin's aircraft weights, my CG would be out by about 0.5" forward when landing with no fuel (not ideal on either front there) Now, to help with CG and possibly my height, does anyone see any problem with moving the front seat back to about 61"-62" arm position ?? I would prefer to fly within the CG's, as I know some have said they have flown outside without issue. But my chicken meter alarm keeps going off. Question 2 Ive been looking for some plans to do a timber mock-up of the cockpit, is their something available? Seems a bit overboard to spend US$535 for plans only to find I dont fit. Yes, I "might" be able to find someone local, but they wouldn't have the proposed "mods" Question 3 Is there a dedicated active Cozy IV build forum? Other useful suggestions welcome. Thanks
Kent Ashton
Q-1: You might have to use a little more ballast when flying solo but others have moved the seat an inch or two. I am 5-11 and the only "fit" problem I had was my shoulder hitting the canopy frame. I scalloped-out a place for it, which helped. It depends also on the thickness of seat cushions. I imagine there are other 6-4 flyers--can't name any off hand, though. If you are broad-shouldered, that might be a problem. I have a 6-4 friend, rather stout and broad-shouldered, who just can't fit in my seats Q-2: I woudn't bother with a mockup but I'd find a Cozy owner in Oz and go sit in his airplane. Q-3: Many links at www.cozybuilders.org but here are a few I had bookmarked https://cozy1537.blogspot.com/search/label/Chapter 01 Description and Introduction https://ez.canardaircraft.com/www.ez.org/pages/waynehicks/index.html https://cozyserenity.weebly.com/ And a good Long-EZ builder site. Lots of overlap with a Cozy http://www.aryjglantz.com/p/blog-page.html Quote -KentCozy IV N13AM-750 hrs, Long-EZ-85 hrs and sold
Drew
Thanks Kent, 1: OK, so moving the seat is possible. 2: Yeah, I'm on the hunt, the SAAA should be able to help too 3: Thanks, hadn't seen the first 2 links. However, my question was more this type of Forum dedicated to Cozy, not just build blogs. But the blogs can be very helpful too. I would much prefer to start a Long-EZ / Open-Ez, but not sure it would be allowed under our Rules. Looking into this further too.

If you don't plan on putting people with legs in the back seat, that's certainly doable, although it will affect downstream fabrication of strakes and access holes to the baggage area inside the strakes. If you're going to be flying regularly with a relatively forward CG, you could also leave the canard at the ORIGINAL span and move your CG RANGE forward by about 1", to 96.5" - 101", rather than the current, shorter span canard's 97.5" - 102". Depending upon YOUR weight, however, that MIGHT require substantial ballast when solo. On 10/22/2023 at 6:42 PM, Drew said: Is there a dedicated active Cozy IV build forum? Yes. Drew
Marc, oops, sorry about that No one in the back, so plenty of luggage space without the strake storage Re canard. Heard about this. Will need to investigate more. But in reality, would be mostly solo flying. With your weights, i would only need 0.5", and if i have to move ballast for solo, so be it Email sent Edited October 24, 2023 by Drew
