Defiant Plans?

Does any one know of Defiant plans for sale and or have any specs on the plane?

A friend of mine has done some reading on composite construction and is interested in mold less construction. I've told him to look at the cozy but he wants something with more space. The Defiant looks like it might be a contender but I've told him that plans would probably be difficult, if not impossible, to find. I know that the RAF does not sell them anymore.

Thanks,

Sean

I have a good friend who is a defiant builder. I will ask him if they have a list or if he knows anyone or can suggest places to advertise. It IS BIG. He is a "cave diver" and chose it because it would hold all his SCUBA gear and he could sleep sprawled out in the plane. It's not fast (maybe 160-165 kts) but I believe it will cruise all day SE. Took Forest nearly 15 yrs to build.

I'll tickle him on it .... Jim S.

I know very little about the defiant, have seen two, one at oshkosh and one at oakland pontiac airport and i talked to one owner.

I am not one for negative building thoughts, but, they take a looooooooooooong time to build, very complex.

On another note, the one owner that i talked to was in process of rebuilding his, lost an engine shortly after takeoff and ended up in trees, but he did love the plane

The brock catologue does list parts for them

enjoy the build

Mike

maker wood dust and shavings - foam and fiberglass dust and one day a cozy will pop out, enjoying the build

From a friend who built and flies a Defiant:

There is a Yahoo Group for Defiants. You can post a request for plans there. At this point

there are only copies available.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/defiantflyers/

Dust is right - they take a long LONG time to build. But then again, if you want a twin, it is the only game in town. If you were to get with RAC and see if they would be inclined to look up their list of sales of Defiant plans and compare it to a list of completed projects from the email list above, you might be able to find plans or an abandoned project. Or get on the list and see if anyone there knows of someone who quit building (or never started).

Thanks for the info! I will pass it along to my friend.

I saw a real nice example of one at the Rough River fly in. It is a large plane.

Jim, I met you at Rough River this year. I was the guy hauling around three kids. We talked a little bit about rotaries and your

plane.

Thanks again for everyones input!

  • 4 weeks later...

I purchased an original set of defiant plans (serial # 56) from Burt way back when. I had maybe 1500 hours into building it when Hurricane Iniki took my project, along with my dad's own designed & buit bi-plane, and scattered them all over Kauai. At that time, I thought that I might build again, and obtained exact copies of the template pages that I had cut up, from another Defiant builder.

I never did restart the project again, mostly because of having kids and other financial concerns.

Now I decided to start building a new plane again, but this time I decided on a Cozy (less expensive and less building time).

I never really thought about selling my plans until now. I just joined your forum and have discovered that there is still interest in people wishing to build Defiants.

BUT, before I ran into this thread, I found another forum member that was interested in purchasing the plans. Not trying to gouge him, and just feeling good that someone could use the plans,I offered him a pretty small price for the plans, in which he sounded elated.

I told him that I would be out of town until Jan 4th, and would contact him when I got back in order to complete the sale.

If for some reason he decides to back out, I would gladly sell the plans to anyone else that is interested.

I will let the forum know of what happens in Janurary.

Happy building/dreaming!

Hello

My friend and I bought the late Mr. Baker's partially completed Rutan Defiant project. His family told us he was an aircraft engineer for Boeing and some of you may already be familiar with him as he was very active in the Defiant community. We have complete Defiant plans and are able to offer complete plan sets including updates. We also have patterns. We may also be interested in selling the Defiant project aircraft. There are too many parts and details to list here but photos and descriptions are available to serious inquiries.
