787Guy
Where is the preferred location for a landing light on the L.E. ? I've seen some mention of "Landing Light Plans/Drawings" - how can I get a hold of these. Seems now with LEDs and HIDs you could put something pretty cosmic in there. Kent Ashton
The usual LL is a hinged light in the belly below the seat and a simple lever to actuate it. You can see the lever between the pilots' legs here, just left of center http://www.longezpilot.com/PG10%20Instrument%20Panel%20Pics.htm I don't think the LEZ plans specified a light but the Cozy IV plans have some drawings, using the same sort of lever. I like this idea because it is light and you can set the light straight ahead for taxi or angle it down for landing but there are many ideas out there for what and where to put them. AVI
The landing light plans for the LongEZ were copies of the VeriEZ drawings. The Berkut drawings do show details for a landing light, also mounted on the belly.
787Guy
Wondering if I could instead put a small powerful one right on the portion of the nose gear that doesn't touch/rest on the ground while the aircraft is kneeling ? That way I don't need a second mechanism/ opening/control-lever in the aircraft. There are several small lights now available that put out a great deal of lumens at reasonably low voltage. Contrary to some opinions, most anything you hang out there on the gear is nice for landing drag but also drag for takeoff and we already burn up some distance doing that. Small and very powerful would be a nice compromise!Other designs have done what you suggest with traditional sized lamps and lots of drag. Just reduces your runway options. Not a game breaker but not good either. Edited November 30, 2014 by flyingriki

If it could be faired into the gear leg I think it would be worth trying. http://www.aveoengineering.com/index.php/product-info-helios Edited December 1, 2014 by 787Guy

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea - there are times you want your lights on and you don't want the gear down. Also, the gear vibrates a lot. With some of the small lights that are out there now, the nose or the lower winglets are good places. Some have used the canard tips or the LE of the wing near the tip. Quote Marc J.
