  1. And... if you look at that site for the corvair... Why do they have to extensively modify the engine parts to make it work for an airplane??? Because, quite simply, IT WAS NEVER DESIGNED FOR AN AIRPLANE!!! What was this thread about? Legroom? Back in 2008? Oh...!

     

    Is the 5'10" girlfriend still around? I've been thru two girls since then! One of them came around twice.

    Yes she is... and we are building a Cozy IV now... The girlfriend won... ;)

    Just out of curiosity (if anyone knows), does the ez really fly similar to the Flight Simulator X version from AlphaSim? I downloaded that a few days ago and seems OK, I'm just getting used to the shallow approach (and can't figure out how to deploy the speed brake:( )

    Serious I want the panel to look sexy and easy to use.

     

    Just a super cazy thought.

     

    On the display one can get the artifical horizon stuff on top of the GPS or the synthetic forward view or whatever. Would it be possible to put it on top of video images.

    It can not be a big deal to put a forward facing cameralens in the nose and stream those images onto the display as background for the artifical horizon stuff. This would be soooo hot for the person in the back, since you dont realy have a good view forward.

  5. Well I'm about to start building my Cozy IV, what would you guys think is a good expoxy systems nowadays for someone building up north in Montreal.

     

    My shop as a controled temp of about 70-75 F and about 40-50% humidity.

     

    I'm leaning towards the MGS 285 system.

     

    Although the temps don't get to hot here in the summer, they do get really cold in the winter (-40 F), what effect if any as very cold temps on these systems? Just wan't to know what to expect leaving this plane parked outside (and using it) during winter months.

  6. It is expensive but it's a firewall back package... so you get every thing you need and its all NEW... not USED or an incomplete package...

     

    Mayby in a couple of years we can get one cheaper with say 1,000 hours on it or a prop strike or two... :cool2:

  7. If you use disposable gloves, you should be changing them every 1/2 hour or so even with incidental contact. Don't stick you hands in the epoxy on purpose.

    This is good to know, because when you watch the old video "Building the Rutan Composites"... Mr Rutan and Melvil use their hands to smear off epoxies and to sometime spread it around. But seing that Mr Melvil was using a barrier cream clearly indicates that we know a lot more about epoxies (and their impact on the human body) today then we knew back then.

     

    All these "does and don'ts" about safety should be stickied somewhere on this forum... no pun intended. :D

  8. Well I'm the proud owner of plans #1588 :carrot::banana::brocolli: .

     

    I'll be ordering a bunch of supplies next week. From then its right into the build. The shop being in order and my work tables already built.

     

    This weekend is dedicated to reading through these plans. I will be asking a buch a question before I dive to deep thought.

     

    On this I would like to ear from guys that are building with a 540 in mind (I'll be using a T4 turbo 20B rotary, but the weight is about the same I ear) Lots of ducks the get in a row...

  9. 2. It’s true, most VEs flying use O200, O235, some O320 and very few Rotax with one fatality caused by the engine that I know of.

    Are you refering to the VE that cought fire due to sub standard fuel lines? This accident was not caused by the engine itself but by inadequate accessories.

  10. If you buy a project, the plans should come with it. The plans have a serial number that should stay with the ONE plane that the plans were intended for.

     

    If you find a project that has older plans, you can update the plans using the info in the newsletters and for $50 you can buy a new set of M drawings so long as you own a serial number (a set of original plans).

    Thanks Phil, I know all of that but I want 3rd edition plans and a project that is just started. If I can't find one soon (say in the next 2 weeks). I'm ordering new ones and materials.

  11. Anybody tried an Akrapovic EVOLUTION SLIP-ON partial exhaust system built for Yamaha motors. When tested the temperature of the header tubes exceeded 800ºC and it held up.

     

    I know that the exhaust heat from a rotary engine can destroy most mufflers... so I just wanted to know if poeple that fly these installation have though of using a motorcycle exhaust... as they are light and built, as far as racing exhaust are concern, to handle hi exhaust temps...

     

    Maybe they can survive to the abuse of a rotary... and maybe not...

  12. That's a good idea, something in-between... I was trying to put a "quick start kit" together that had all the foam parts pre-cut (seat backs, bulkheads, etc) all the layers of glass pre-cut, sides already together and cut to shape, all wood pre-cut to size. Even have the forms that are needed for the Cozy sides and main spar pre-cut, for easy assembly. All a builder would need to do is mix epoxy and start laying glass. Sure, it would cost more than just the raw materials, but it would be a lot cheaper than buying a kit. Plus you're still learning the skills required to build a composite plane.

     

    I talked to a few "older heads" about the concept, they thought it would help sell a few, but it's a real difficult world selling small numbers to a limited market. Just look at all the mom and pop's in the home built industry, just trying to stay a float. This market has a few things making it a hard sell, it's a canard, it's plans built and it's made of composites. I think most people think of the smell, the sanding, the dust and they would rather deal with a "normal" looking plane made of metal that has almost all the holes pre-pinched for them. Van's has a really good business model as well, which really helps sell more planes.

     

    Just my thinking out loud thoughts...

    If you want a Kit... go with the Aerocanard or build your Cozy IV fuselage and buy a complete Cozy IV wing kit (canard + wings + winglet (installed) with controls installed and balance) for $15,000, a molded main spar (main wings and spar are predrilled) for $2,500 and their strakes for $2,500 and you are well on your way.

     

    Considering that building the entire airframe of a Cozy IV nowadays is about 20K (as I was told).

    When I ear thing like 10 years ago... I'm tempted to answer with a quote from Wayne's World... Dude live in the now :D

     

    Kidding aside, Lynn is right that the Lycoming is a plug and play installation with a proven track record. But 10 years is a LONG time.

     

    One should not attempt to reinvent the wheel with his rotary installation. If one uses the after market parts that are out their, uses a T-04 turbo (not really for the added power but to take away some of the energy from the hot exhaust gaz and compensate for a less then optimal intake) and follow the installation instruction that are available out there (yes it's all available)... you will have a reliable installation. If on the other hand you want to free hand it... well live and lurn...

     

    And some Lycoming installation that are flying today are plain and simple scary... it what happens when people experiment to much...
