  1. In considering use of the Cozy wing design on a Long Ez. I am looking for someone who can come to a conclusion as to how the Cozy structure is carrying the increased useful load. I now know that the E racer has a befed up wing and that the Cozy has a larger wing. Is the Cozy IV wing also beefed up to get the additional useful load over a long? Maybe that I need to post this in a Cozy forum........ ........................Mike
  2. CP; Thanks for the response!! If the Cozy uses the same wing and canard rigging how does the Cozy attain its Useful load which is higher than the Long?
  3. I am considering using some of the design criteria for the Cozy on a Long Ez (wing and wing F/S to Canard F/S). Does the Cozy Mk IV have larger wings / canard or F/S #s than a Long Ez? Can anyone let me know what the weight and balance sheet looks like on a Cozy? First flight envelope on the Cozy IV? F/S numbers on the Cozy IV? etc. etc. on the Cozy IV? The Cozy looks like a nice airplane but to get the economy of build and the utility that I am looking for I am going in this direction. Thank you .....................Mike
  4. Please let me know how much you want for the plans. I intend to build a Long Ez with some of the design criteria of the Cozy built into it. Am interested in cozy plans for this purpose. Mike .........zies8@comcast.net

I have a set of VV plans that I would probably be willing to sell if you are still interested. Also have solitare plans.
  6. Try contacting the manufacturer and then locating vendors from their vendor/ distrugutor list. My 2 cents......................Mike

  8. I recieved my Long Ez owners manual in the mail and it sheds a lot of light on the process of preparing the airplane for flight. I think that the mocifications that I have in mind will be doable. They are; 1. Considering using the wings and canard from the Cozy. setting up the Long EZ for the specs on the Cozy (namely F/S of Canard and F/S of wing) I am thinking will get me the 1000# gross that I am looking for. Any thoughts???......................Mike P.S. Thanks for the Excell spreadsheet Waiter!!!!!!!!!!
  9. Tony; Glad you were able to round up copies. IT's great to have a group of people that are willing to help the way they do.
  10. I do not have an operating manual. I will have shortly when I get my new set of plans. You are right that I should have been refering to the W&B instead of the C/G for most of the equation. Does anyone know if the canard of the cozy is moved forward? Seems that I read somewhere that it is or the limo is. I'll check the article that Mr. Kridel sent me. If that is the case why should'nt the Long Ez work with the same canard forward position. Ass-u-me ing the the cozy is different. I ......"GUESS"....... the C/G is the same on the Cozy in relation to the main wing.
  11. I have a set of Long Ez plans that are incomplete. Until my new set arrives that I just bought on ebay I will be in the dark unless I ask y'all my question. There are many modifications that you guys are making to the canard planes. When these modifications are made what method are you using to come to your new design criteria? I mean what starting point are you using to develop a CG envelope for your new plane? I would like to start a long ez and I need to make modifications like the limo ez and long nose etc. Do the plans come with a set of FS #s that one could use for developing the CG envelope or would you need to start by weighing your airframes CG and go from there? I need to design my plane with my 270 lb frame in mind (no fat).
  12. Thank you Bob. I think that you are probably right about leaving as many portions alone to eliminate the need to redesign everything.

If one were to make modifications to a homebuilt aircraft like so many have my question becomes this. How is the CG envelope determined on a "new plane". Is it necessary to become a test pilot and experiment with the planes forwad envelope and rear envelope until you push the envelope so far that problems arise? The answer to this question would be very important if one were making modifications like nose extensions, altenative engines etc. etc.
  15. The fuselage that I sat in did'nt have the strake holes cut out. I guess if they were cut out you elbows would fit in them offering more space for the rest of the body. Are there any 6'-2" people out there that have wide shoulders who fit into the Long Ez?
  16. I have a question for you if you would be kind enough to take time to give me your opinion. I am looking at a Long Ez project that is already started. The project has the fuselage completed with the air grake installed the nose gear bowl installed and the landing light installed. I had never sat in a long ez before I sat in this one. I have shoulders that are just too wide. My arms are pinned to my torso while sitting in the incomplete fuselage. My question is this; In your opinion would widening the fuselage on this project plane be worthy of merrit or even possible. I am thinking that it could be cut down the middle and made wider. Would this be possible using the methods in the plans for repair and do you think that the added weight and structural questions caused by this repair would make starting over more desireable? The fuselage that this fellow put together looks very nice. He wants $2250.00 for his project and all of the plans books videos and many ken brock parts. It looks like a sweet deal unless making this conversion to an existing fuselage would be a bad Idea. I would greatly appreciate your opinion. Mike in Utah
  17. On a fishing trip to Alaska a few years back we fllew out to one of the rivers on Kodiak. Our ride was in a Cessna 206. This 206 had a baggage pod. It is interesting to note that the pilot was an approximately 180 to 200 pound boy and four of us all relatives from a big boy family are 200 to 250 each. We put all of our fishing gear either on our laps or in the baggage pod on the belly. That was a fllight to remember. I recall looking out the window at the landing gear and noting that the gear were flexed (loaded) to the point that the tires were on at least a 20 degree angle to the ground. The airplane had no problem taking off. At sea level it is amazing how much better an aircraft performs. The pilot never weighed anything. That plane really took a beating if that is the way it was loaded day after day. It is no wonder that the safety record in Alaska is the worst. I will be looking at a Long Ez project today that has the fuselage complete. If I were to consider modifying an already built fuselage would I be considering something that is kosher?
  18. Thank you Wayne; To give you a little more information. When I say that I am 6'-2" that is not all of the equation. I went to buy a new suit for church the other day and I caused a little bit of consternation for the salesperson. You see... I am a size 62 suit. You'all might think that to be funny for some one that is considering a long ez. The problem with a size 62 suit is that it comes with size 60 pants. It is impossible for a tailor to tailor a size 62 suit to fit my size 42 pants. The option was to get a sport coat and buy pants that fit me. This is where I am at. I know that the fuselage can be widened and the nose streatched and the seats moved. Waynes answer as to the capability of the aircraft makes sense when you weigh it against the cozy which is a wide long and has a gross of 2050 lbs. and a useful load of 1000 lbs. Is it logical to assume that you could write your weight and balance sheet to show a useful load that matches the cozy? I am a pilot who has looked into homebuilts for a lot of years only to be discouraged by the FAAs "standard pilot weight of 170 lbs". That is a rediculous # to use. Practically most "4 place " airplanes are not 4 place at all. I would bet that the average person in the U.S would weigh in at more that 170. For safety's sake would'nt it be better to design aircraft around a person who weighs more like 220? If you start to take into consideration density altitude on a hot day in the Rockies your aircraft that is designed around the 170 lb person leaves no margin for error when calculating W&B. Many have been killed flying from the plains to high altitude, loading to max gross and taking off without figuring D/A (density altitude). Sorry for the rant. Guess I am just making excuses for my fat ass.
  19. I am 6'-2" and my son is 6'-3". I have been interested in building a Long Ez forever. Is it a pipe dream for us to fit into a Long Ez? I have located a project that has the fuselage already built. I will be looking at it tomorrow. I have searched this site for info regarding useful load and I can not come up with difinitive information on the usefull load of a Long Ez. One of the post's mentioned Burts flight with a gross weight of 2000lb. The weight added to the rear seat in the form of an auxiliary fuel tank. If I could get some feedback from you guys it would be much appreciated.
