  1. Are you guys talking about an automotive engine on an experimental aircraft or something else?

A Porsche may be great on the ground, but I really doubt its efficiency in a low RPM, prolonged run time. Just my $0.02 opinion.

All I know is that Lycoming has been in operation for a long time... :)

    Cheers,

  2. Yup, the blue foam is for the wings/canard. However, I will echo others that it will cost as much or more for shipment of the foam. Don't ask how I know!

Another consideration... I would definitely buy the thicker foam from ACS for the inboard cores since they have the thicker blue foam, which negates the need to add a sliver of foam if using the 8" thick blocks. It's a real pain in the A##!

The shorter 41" blocks will require additional work and more micro-ing afterwards. No big deal if you consider the cost savings on the sale billet. But be aware prior to buying.

  3. Uploaded a few:

28k modem (no joke!), so it's only a few, and they're resized.

Good fun, cool planes, neat people.

    Hey Bro' Rick!

You have the eyes for camera work. Thanks for the memories! I hope to see you again next year, by golly, bring along some completed bulkhead!! :)

    Cheers, Bro!

  4. There has been incidences where BRS can be a detriment. A few Cirrus drivers, overly confident of the BRS have pushed the safety envelope, only to perish while deploying the system at unsafe speed.

Personally, I'm not convinced that BRS is a panacea. The cost factor, IMHO, greatly surpasses safety. Once again, it boils down to common sense!

    Just my $0.02...

  5. Merry Christmas everyone!

I've spent some time this morning in the workshop trying to reinstall the elevator onto the canard with the hinge pins. As you all know, it's a difficult job. After searching the archives, I'll try the battery drill motor trick with a slightly bent pin to seek out the holes, unless there is a better way.

The other difficulty I have is keeping or slipping the thin washers in the tight space while locating the pins. Does anyone have a tip as to how I to overcome this problem? I'm thinking of gluing the washers onto the brackets.

Waht appears to be the simplest of task is turning into an exercise in patience. I could really use your feedback.

    Thanks!!

  6. Phil,

Waiting for MGS availability has been difficult. I am most in need of slow hardeners (287) since there is only 1 quart remaining. :(

IF I happen to run out of MGS and the supply line is still cut off, I would likely work on building jigs and cutting templates. The flying surfaces need templates, the turtleback needs a jig, and then I can begin to cut foam cores for the wings and winglets. Certainly those activities will hold me over until the MGS supply resume after satisfying the bureaucrats. :)

  7. The supplier has been in the process of getting packaging recertification from a Canadian agency in Ottawa and has been hoping to get approval for several weeks.

    Aircraft Spruce

How will the packaging recertification effect the increased HazMat fees imposed on the MGS system?
  8. Well since you asked. I think you're a non-conformist, anti-establishment, anti-social, sociopathatic deviant that needs to be looked up in a cell measured in metric. :) <--- that's a SMILEY

You know I couldn't let that opportunity pass Jon. However, I'm in agreement with you on the tenths business, but I conformed and have the Stanley tape for fear that the plane will be out of spec and something horrible may ensue. The problem is the tenths become hundredths, and my marking tool isn't thin enough to differentiate.

There has been some discussion on dimensional tolerances and I've come to accept that the Cozy isn't going into space with the space shuttle, so close is good enough.

My latest struggle is the accuracy of the digital level. I have spent an entire afternoon leveling the canard and its incidence angle to near perfection (+/- 0.1deg) only to return the same evening to have the alignment differ!! I think I have a draft in the basement. :) So I begin to question the reliability of the digital level. Once again, some smart ass told me the early canards were built using the bubble levels and none have had any structural issues. DOH!!

I guess all this ranting exposed my idiosyncrises and insecurities, so I'll just fade back into the woodwork and lurk some more.

  9. Welcome aboard Chris and Aloha cousin...

As you are rummaging the neighborhood for foam scraps to hotwire, be very careful that they are not urethane based. The burning of urethane will emit a toxic fume... (cyanide??) Look for simple styrofoam to hotwire.

As other builders are well aware of this information, I just thought you might not since you are "new". :)

  10. Sorry for the quick thread hijack... :)

Steve, nice web page. Just a note, your spam check may be malfunctioning. It did not allow my Guest book entry despite my 3 attempts at correctly spelling the spam check 'pass' word. Oh well...

  11. OK, the picture is getting clearer. I'm a bit myopic ;) and dense :o

It seems the key is to present Burt with the GPLD licensing plan and convince him that it will release him from all liabilities. Since he is no longer interested in selling his Long EZ plans, this will harmlessly pass on his wonderful creation to future generations.

As above, Burt has the prerogative to accept or reject. IMHO, a dialog with Burt needs to take place before launching this Open EZ movement, AND if he rejects the plan... so be it. It is not ours to take without permission, even if we don't call it a Long EZ.

Please don't misunderstand, I would love to see the resurgence of canards at Fly-Ins. The gaggles of RVs are becoming an irritant. :bad: It's just that I would like to see it with "daddy's" permission. And as you stated Steve, if approached with a good sales pitch, Burt might buy it. I hope we are on the same page.

  12. Please keep us posted on the long term effectiveness of those HF blades. I strongly suggest wearing proper eye protection when using your Fein, especially with cutting a hefty piece like the gear strut legs or tabs.

  13. If the crux of releasing a copyrighted material into the public domain requires consent of the copyright holder, what happens if Burt rejects the open letter for consent? That would mean that any release into public domain will be illegal.

The current thinking of releasing his plans without consent is asinine, in light of the concern over his impending rejection. The liability rests squarely upon his shoulders.

I also don't understand the idea of changing the name of his plans to, say, OpenEZ will absolve him from any liability. Isn't that analogous to merely changing the title of a thesis, yet keeping the content intact? That's simply plagiarism. Even Nat Puffer changed some wordings in the Long EZ plans to make it 'his'.

This matter may need a legal eagle's blessing, but it's pretty black and white.

  14. Open generally means non-proprietary. Everyone is encouraged to contribute what they can to the effort, but no one owns the copyright to the final product.

Firstly, nice write up on the latest Sports Aviation magazine!! :) You're so fortunate to have such a supportive wife as Cathy.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Long EZ plan or for that matter, any of the RAF plans are proprietary in nature? If so, then by placing them in the open domain will make them non-proprietary? That sounds a lot like socialism to me. :D Does the plans owner have any input while his properties are being fleeced? :irked:

As I said, I could use some edumacation here.

  15. Somebody please help me understand what is meant by "Open". By being "Open", does it mean that there is no longer intellectual property infringement?

As one who is obviously ignorant of this concept, the idea of disseminating copyrighted plans under the "open" umbrella is fishy, and borders on copyright infringement without permission from the plan owner.

    Inquiring wants to know....

  16. Thanks Hat for the kind words. I am humbled by your comments.:o It was during the opening minutes of the Broncos vs. Seahawks game that I decided to give the auction a shot... admittedly I enlisted the help of an online sniping outfit. :bad: It was my first ever attempt at using such a service and had no expectation of winning, it was a trial run.

The CDs will be a nice collectors' item for me since, at this time, I have no intention of building more than one plane of any kind. The Cozy is and will continue to be a hobby that can interfere with some of my other responsibilities. :D

Do tell via PM or otherwise what Matt of TERF will impart upon me. I have no intention of reproducing the contents of the CDs, it's simply an unscrupulous act that I will not participate in. Thanks again for the heads up Hat!

  17. Thanks for the information "hat". I wonder if Jon would have a 'buy it now' feature and close off the bidding if someone is willing to match the max bid.

The last second poaching prevalent on eBay can make bidding unpleasant, unless it's an item I must have.
