macleodm3 Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 OK.... I'm finally finishing up Chapter 6 (it was a fun chapter), and looking and reviewing Chapter 7. Edge, Big Steve.... and any other recent Chapter 7 guys... did you do the landing gear cover joggle in Chapter 7, or did anyone here try the Wayne Hicks landing gear cover modification? It looks easier, but the plans have been working good so far. I would prefer to avoid this joggle and go with Wayne's idea, but just how hard is this joggle work in Chapter 7? Does it require redoing once or twice? I know, I know, we're on here talking about whether or not to do plane modifications.... this one shouldn't add a year to the build (but who can say for sure). Phil Kriley Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 I did the Wayne Hicks method, and I'm glad I did. His plans are very easy to follow, and the end result is very pleasing to me. If you choose to go this route, make your cutouts in the flange to clear the landing gear tabs before you drill the holes for the screws and nutplates. I got lucky and my nutplate locations did not interfere with the cutouts. I bought a rivet squeezer and it worked great for attaching the nutplates. Jason Heath Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Andrew, I did the joggle and it (and the cover) turned out great. With that said, I would probably go with Wayne's idea if I had to do it again. The joggle, aluminum inserts, drilling and taping, the fairing in with micro etc. take a bit of time and leave very little room for error, without having to redo anything. Wayne's deal is pretty straight forward and if you screw up one of the flanges now or at later date, it's easy to fix. Quote Regards, Jason T Heath MarkIV #1418 heathjasont@yahoo.com
Big Steve Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Andrew: I did something similar but not exactly the same as Wayne Hicks. Infact I do a lot of thing like Wayne but hardly ever the exactly the same. Here is a link to the picture of the nutplates I put in mine. I dont remeber if it was a joggle or what. It works good was hard to make and bolts in really tight and nice. I would do it the same way again if I did it over.
