  1. Burt makes a lot of sense. But it's really tempting to make changes for aesthetics, such as lengthening the nose. Seems like it should be OK to do that, so long as you keep it straight and symetrical and don't go overboard - yet Burt says it could actualy slow the plane down... Whodda thunk it?

Would a nicer-looking slightly longer and sharper shape to the nose really screw it up? :o

Remember the article is written regarding the Vari-Viggen.

  2. Guys. Steve was just working on downing the brew from the bottom of the still, and it gets pretty potent down there. He'll catch up to reality pretty soon.

That was more words than Steve used all last year.

...at least words that were spelled write!!:)

  3. Not to fling poo, Tman..but his closing remarks say that with the past setbacks and still missing ECU's, he hoped to be flying April 09.

...and that after he needed to ship the engine back for "updates".

What the friggin samhill is a "update"?

I gotta say that I envy the fewer parts of a hamster spinner, but you guys definitely get the optimism award due to all the handwringing. The guys at FlyRotary are the kind of guys that put us on the moon. [never say die] Glad you folks are out there![wheres the clapping hands / applause emoticon to place here?]

  4. I'm exactly where my signature states, presently. I just put that signature on about 3 weeks ago. I just screwed up my upper back this last week in the gym, and it really sucks. Cant move my head past two o'clock either way or bend over to use a tool or stir a cup 'o resin.*

    Getting older is a PIA.

Building a fast airplane is schweet!!!

    Back at it soon enough.

    * So in semi-frustration last night, I just drew a tee-shirt screen that I've been thinking about in the interim, and am going to drive it down on Monday to a local shop and see what it takes tohave 20 made. I always need teeshirts to work on the plane in. I can't decide on which screen?

So can I still get a couple of your chairs?... with a BW winglet on my embroidered Cozy, somewhere down the line?

  5. Well, I have seen the ghost come to life!!!!! I wondered where you have been...and then you nonchalantly just post a catbird observation.

How have you been these past couple years, and are you still selling those GREAT Flightline brand chairs?? Working at Scaled?

    Welcome back!

  6. Regarding the Franklin...

I'm curious about the price. I missed it in my quick search of their web-site and I didn't find it quickly in a Google search. What price are you seeing?

This is straight off the Franklin aircraft engine website:

"220 hp Franklin Engine with “STC” Conversion Kit • Install an astonishing 220 hp in your Cessna 170, 172, 175 or Stinson 108 series aircraft. Package comes with used 220 hp 6A-350 Franklin engine and our popular STC'd engine conversion kit. Engine has approximately 2000 hrs with log, disassembled for inspection, yellow tagged crankshaft. STC conversion kit includes installation paperwork, engine mount, exhaust system, oil cooler, air box, heat box, brackets, etc. Only $19,500 for complete package."

Astonishing!!! I wonder if thats the FI version?..and if it includes the EI and a Mag?

Hmmm. That 19k plus about a grand is what my IO540 will finally cost me, rebuilt to new tolerances. Add a grand for my CGirrlz mount and 2 more for the exhaust. That includes my Klaus EI and Slick Mag on one side, and rebuilding my Bendix FI, by Airflow performance.

Not sounding like a super deal to me on the Franklin as you are buying it disassembled according to the above.

    YMMMV

  7. BLASPHEMY.. SELLING your PUMP????? Good gosh. For most, the sun rises and sets on the hallowed, glorious, build inspiring [bow in obeisance] Micheal EngeERRiNNNNNG EPOXYPUMP!!!!

...so why ya gettin' rid of it?

BTW, was it you that bought mine when I sold it here on the forum a couple years ago?

The only pump I have now, I got at Austin Power's Garage sale.

    He swore it wasnt his.

  9. Okay. I'm convinced.

I'm scrapping the rotary in favor of a Lycoming.

    Thanks for setting me straight.

Okay Tman. You got me goin'!! Engine rethink.

To be Frank.... If youre switchin', I'm switchin'.

I'm gonna scratch this beautiful I0540 I got, and buy a Franklin.

Frankly, after all thats what started this thread- A Franklin.

[in a pigs eye I'm switchin, and I doubt you are either.].

  10. ... nice looking job by the way.

    Wildbird N227EZ

"Nice looking job, by the way"...understatement of the month!!! By the way, it looks as if you could eat out of it in there!

Clue me, as to how everything looks so friggin clean?!

Also, do you polish your exhaust after each flight? Or do you get your GIB to do it?

    Yow.

Man, you got one clean engine bay, Scotty. No klingons in there!:)

  11. My typo for the 200hp. I meant to have two 2's side by side.

That was 220hp...and if I remember right, that is at like 2800rpm.

I thought about the Franklin at one time. The engine makes sense from a specs POV, especially if it can be pumped up up a bit compression-wise. With it being light weight though, maybe not advisable. Good luck with your investigation.

A 6 cyl at 220hp vs. a adrenalin pumped up 4 banger Lyco Thunderbolt, sure would be schmoother. You like those IVO props? Look kinda wimpy to me. Are they robust?

With the added hp, you probably wont be lacking as much as a stock engine on DA days. If you put the CSP on it, you just negated your weight savings. Who does the mounts for a Cozy on those Franklins? Maybe Nats old one is sitting in his hanger somewhere looking for a home- worth an ask?

Post your findings, as I bet others are going to find your info interesting.:)

  12. why not gust weld out the steel ones and have them chromed or nickel plated cost about the same as the water jet cutting. they are already fit to the plane many places do custom chrome for the low rider industry. they like their chrome. that way they do the polishing. do you know what you are getting into polishing the SS? I do and that is why mine are aluminum besides the weight. when you look at the cost of the polishing of SS vs chrome they are about the same. there is also a chrome coating that can be used. http://coatofchrome.com/ how about black chrome? or colored chrome? but if you do that you will have to buy a Lambo to go with the plane

Well, snap.. you saw through me.

I have a Gallardo on order to replace my z4, see picture below. [pic enclosed due to the noted plate#'s]

Good idea about the chroming etc. How thick is that/those process'? I guess I could live with the weld. Thing is I need everything exactly the same. Maybe the chroming would be easier.

Salinas ought to have several chrome outfits, I would think. Maybe San Jose?

  13. Lynn,

I have 3/16" SS. Yes, polishing it is on the agenda. It was you and I talking about it and the bend at the top, [don't want a weld]and the re-heattreating of Alum that swayed me to the SS.

EVERY hole has to be in the same place as the original units as nutplates are installed in the canopy core at each mounting point with attachment core backing. Those mounting cores go skin to skin. The geometry cant change anywhere. I didnt do it like Uli at all.

I never could get my mind wrapped around taxiing around with the canopy 1/3 up on the shocks, with crosswinds beating on it and the side to side forces from uneven taxiways, etc all working on those hinges for many years, with them being done out of 3/16 aluminum. My installation is omewhat like yours Lynn, in that it has a front guide on each side of the arced hinge arm for an additional point of stability. But still, all of my analness ended up with me going with Steel and then SS.

  14. Erlend,

To answer your question, I dont know what was in Nats mind about a side vs FHC. But I will say that many feel the FHC is a safer canopy. Maybe that is why you are starting on it. Anyway, there is a LOT of info in the various forums to read, and Uli's plans are talked about. Uli's hinges would be better if a bit longer so that there is more distance to the cut, from the mounting point on the canopy. AND, this is a BIG and, put the hinge pivot as HIGH UP as you can on F28...to the point of removing foam on the canopy up to the "top skin". Big Steve and I just didnt like the gas shocks out where you can see them so that is why they arent where Uli mounted his. Buly and a few have gone the whole turtleback canopy lifting route, but it sure seems like a LOT to swing up there. Be good to see what Buly did and get his input. I went with FHCing just the front and swinging the whole rear sideways like per plans so it's easy to get bags in and out and people back there. No "clamshell" door back there for me. THe ULi whole turtleback method would be tons easier...due to all my thinking mocking up parts, and fabbing, and...but I am happy with my solution. Whew!

The Uli method seems to be working for several though so, so, as always, YMMV.

    Good luck!

  15. HI to all.

The great guy who waterjetted out my hinges has bellied up. I am hoping to send my software/program [or my hinges themselves-first run was just steel]to cut my hinges, too someone with a waterjet and have them cut them out. They need to be EXACTLY per the original geometry. I have a piece of stainless ready to UPS out.

    Anybody have a waterjet?

Additionally the shelf part that connects to the canopy bottom needs to a 90degree break, not welded.

    Here's a pic of them.
