  1. That cable that comes thru the upper right side of the instrument panel is frayed around the loop. The one that's connected to the bar that's attached to the blue knob. (I'm still trying to figure out what the function of that knob is?)

Another thing about wires on the right side of the fuselage that are underneath the elevator rod is just a bad place. I've had two airplanes that had the wires put there and if they got loose they always rubbed against the elevator pushrod. The wire bundle hold downs glued to the side are a good idea if thats where you want to keep that wiring.

  2. I'm just happy to see you using terminal busses for everything. Properly crimped terminals are kindof important as well.;) I've lost track of how many experimental airplanes I've rewired in the past that didn't have any TB's anywhere. You're troubleshooting will be mucho simplified when you get going and if you have any problems.

Not having TB's at all is rampant in flying airplanes. I'm guessing that wasn't going to be the final ieteration of your rudder cable. :D !

    Have fun and happy electrons!

  3. One more thing I did in both airplanes was put in aluminum panels. I completely ripped out the old wiring harnesses and built new ones. (I do this for a living.) I was never comfortable with the wiring in the flying planes, and one thing you will always find in many experimental airplanes is shoddy wires. Nature of the beast I guess. It always seems like an afterthought after all the airframe work is done.

I put a Dynon 10A in the 0320 but I haven't flown it with the Dynon yet.

Get help with your wires if you haven't done it before.

  4. I started a Long-ez tub I bought from Robert and Valerie Harris in 1994. I got thru the fuselage on the gear, center section spar, canard, canopy, and misc stuff. Then a local guy in his 80's put his cosmetically challenged 0-235 Long up for sale. I bought it and sold the project plane. My buddy put a leather interior in the flying machine then I flew the heck out of it. Several job changes and moves later it had overhauled cylinders, a new paint job and numerous other upgrades that I did. Along the way I picked up another fuselage that was on the gear, (i traded a car for it!) sold that and sold the 0-235 long, and bought a previously flown 0-320 long that had been taken apart and wasn't flying. It was also cosmetically challenged. I did all the stuff to make it safe to fly. Jeff Rose ignition and engine baffles, hoses, etc, and flew it to RR from OK. I flew the heck out of that one too. Then I moved across country again and took the airplane apart for a paint and cosmetic overhaul and trailered it here. I did buy a pressure blaster that I converted into a soda blaster and I love it. What a great way to take off the old paint and primer. I wish I had that when I did the first restoration. 200 hours to sand the old finish down to the fiberglass.

Now I'm wondering why the hell I took it apart and I'm driving to RR again! Dammit!

Go with the 0320 if you have a choice. Make the nose longer to put the battery farther out for W&B. Plus it's way better looking with the long nose. And never feel bad about how it looks as long as it flies. Look closely at Burt's airplanes in the museum. They are really rough looking, but they fly!!! (Or flew, rather.) I was parked at my hometown in Minnesota and this really beautiful Long going back to Utah from Okosh pulled up next to my fugly 0-235 long. I told the gracious gent that I was embarrassed to have my airplane sitting next to such a perfect gem. He just looked at me and said "It flies doesn't it?" After that, I didn't worry so much.

One more thing, quit looking at the forums and GET BACK TO WORK!!! (Unless you need the advice.)

Don't bother bringing the Guinness - I won't be there. You can owe it to me.

Ha! Trick question! The story was told in the first person, not the third! But you said you hadn't read the book so, damn the internet search engines and your correct answer!

I'll hold the Guinness for you.

  6. Robert Heinlein, "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress". I drink Guinness, and won't be at RR. And it's TANSTAAFL. There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.

    Nope.

Ha, you win! :D Too bad you won't get to collect. Sorry! Guinness with the nitrogen rocket inside, good choice! Brilliant! Double extra points for spelling corrections. I didn't even look it up on the internet so it was off the top of my head.

I guess I'll have extra room in my cooler for hot dogs or something. I'll bring a guiness if you can show up just in case.

  7. I will be happy to sell anyone beer since I'm driving again this year! :D

    Bwahahahahahahah!!!!

The market pays what the market will beer! Moooaahahahah! How many cases do I need to bring?

It's funny, but I been going to RR for 10 years and I don't remember getting lunch for free. TANSTAFL! If you can tell me the origination of that acronym and who said it first, I will give you a free beer! First correct response only! Extra points for having actually read the book. (IE: More beer. Cliffs notes not accepted.)

All this talk about lunch and beer is making me hungry and thirsty.

I'll be drinking Mojito's while Ken Miller will be tossing back his Cranberry & Smirnoff's. So, the beer will be limited cuz I'm a rum drinker too!

O.k. here's my nickle, now I want my three cents back.

  8. What? you don't like the picture of my favorite chocolate cheese cake?

OK, the big secret is I am a cheese cake snob, I do not like my chocolate cheese cake, everybody else loves it, I feel any cheesecake worthy of the name should stand on its own plain and naked, all that topping stuff is just to hide a lackluster recipe.

    Mmmmmmmmmmm.....Naked Cheescake!!!!

I'm also bringing rum to RR. We can pour it on the cake.

    Re: slick magneto drive gear

Yep, I found it. Looks in great shape.

Do you still have it? And is it a non-impulse? I am looking for one for my O-235. Since I sent my mag in, I can't find the one I took off, and they insist it wasn't on the mag when they received it.

    Harley

I just got a look at your post over the weekend.

I still have two each of impulse and non-impulse gears. I took them to SunNfun and they had several other gears selling there so I brought them back home. Email me at home.

    D.

  10. Aw geez, why'd you have to go an do that?

Surf to dynonavionics, download the PDF cutout template (in color too!)

Print, print another just in case.

Debate banging on neighbors door for key to unlock his storage so I can see "new gen" on my IP.

Naa, dig out M drawings, lay Nex Gen on sheet M-1.

    It fits. Nice.

    Must ... Build ... Plane ... First ... Must ... Build ....

I concur. I got halfway thru building and I said 'heck with this' and went out and bought a flying long and sold my project. Never been happier. I know how to look at a project and determine if it's built right and got the building bug all beat out of me. Now I just do the work to improve on what is... Two reburbishments so far!

Don't use your relief tube on the dreams of others though!!! We all been there.

I added a Dynon and I'm halfway thru the repaint. Then all this autopilot stuff came out I saw at SnF and now the new panels... GEEZ!!! It's all ten times better than the stuff from ten years ago even!

  11. You also have to make the pilgramage to Rough River in the fall. There will be way more people there who know canards than you will find at Okosh. You can get lost in the shuffle at Okosh. The RR crew is concentrated in one area. There were also over 70 canards and thier respective guru's with combined knowledge and seminars. I got to see Jack M's E-racer there. That was a super nice airplane and I got to pick his brain a bit. Unfortunately it was destroyed by fire last month. I see you exchanged mails with jack on another post. (Glad to see that you're Ok Jack!)

Anyway, it's worth a trip if you're serious about building. I did the same back in the early 90's to other Central States events and it sounds like you're in the same place in building or wanting to build that I was.

  12.

I like the size of the Aspen system, I was thinking 3 of em would fill up a Long Ez panel nicely.

    .

And three of those will cost thirty thousand dollars! BwahhHahahahahah!!! Really, those things are 'spensive. Blue mountain stuff is cheaper for what you get.

I think that this new Dynon may kill off Blue Mountains niche for flat panels. Or hurt them at least. 10 to 1 odds that the same sized system from Dynon will be priced ever so slightly less. Just not very much less! :) So it goes. By the time you get built there will be so much available.

Check out Stienair and see what's building. I got a buddy up there who works for him.

  13. Check out Dynons next Gen panels on thier website. The trick that all the companies use is to introduce the new stuff at OKosh and Sun-n-fun. The autopilot they introduced at SnF. Now the Next Gen panels are on the website. They just posted it. It looks like Blue mountain stuff and I'll bet it's gonna be a lot cheaper.

Aspen looks nice and I looked at it real serious, but, it's real tiny when you see one in person!

My buddy just got a Garmin 327 and loves it.

  14. Just my .02 here, to me IFR Equipment is like a CCW permit and a 1911, I might never need it, probably will never use it. But I have it. And as the saying goes, I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Now call me crazy, trusting the weather man to be right, is like trusting some one who tells you the nights of the week it is safe to go out in a big city that you are unfamiliar with.

That IFR gear is going into my bird simply because it will potentially save my life should unforeseen weather circumstances arise.

A great case and point on this, I live in South Texas. Once I get myself an Airplane I plan on flying to Boston to see my sister. This is an area of the country I have never flown in, I am totally unfamiliar with it from the air, So having the IFR gear in my bird and knowing how to use it is going to keep me from pulling a John Kennedy Jr. Even if it is a bright sunshiny day.

Also attached is a Layout I have been playing around with for my panel.

    The equipment is as follows.

    1. Garmin G600 MFD

    2. 2x Garmin 430W GPS NAV/COM

    3. Dynon EMS-120 Engine monitor.

    4. Garmin GTX-300 transponder

    5. Garmin GMA 347 Audio Pannel.

It is an initial mockup I did last night, but I sure like it so far. And it shows you can get a lot of gear in there with a little creativity and research. By no means is this my final design, but its looking good thus far, what do you all think?

You must have some serious cash!!! Definitely no wife/girlfriend/mistress...! I used to plan those kindof things too!

  15. Definitely, I got one plate in my head already , I don't need another!

If it comes down to making major modifications like that, I will definitely seek out the assistance of some one who is well qualified in such things.

Make the nose longer and put the battery farther forward. The old nose is ugly anyway.

  16. Heh, one time we got a guy to sick his hand under the yellow contrail tube told him we needed him to stick his hand under there so we could purge the condenser on the radar to see if any water came out.

"Yeah guys, lots of water coming out, its warm too..."

    EYEWWW!!!!!!!!!

  17. Oh yeah... My first long had an 0235 and did great to go from OKC to Houston to visit that same girlfriend. 7 gph. I never leaned it agressively. As far as I know the roughnecker oil guy I sold it to is still taking regular trips from Texas to Florida.

My current Long has the 0-320. You can't go wrong with either engine. I prefer the 0320 for the obvious reasons. Faster and climbs better, and it jumps off the ground sooner. Energy managment is easier.

I did climb to 11.5k going back to OKC from Houston one time with the 0235. No problems. < 7 gph. Sometimes < 6 gph when throttling back. (Why would you want to?)

Gas is cheaper when you consider the bigger engine for the added safety margin. The same can be said for leaning out. Gas is cheaper than a new engine. One buddy of mine always bragged about how he could lean down to <4 gph on a c-85 vari. His exhaust pipe was always white inside! Of course I said gas was cheap three years ago before all these price increases!!!

  18. You should be able to run either direction, none-stop.

Oh-Yah, I forgot to mention. Relief tubes are a must for long haul none stop travel.

I call it; "The ability to leave yellow contrails"

    Waiter

All this talk of flow rates makes me want to go to the boys room. I carry diapers in plastic bags since I don't have a tube. Going back to OK from RoughR a few years ago, my flying buddy had to put his Long down in some scary valley/hill areas in east Arkansas to relieve himself. Wasted gas and time. I was happy and comfortable and still up on high. He no longer teases me about my diapers, and he has some in his plane. It was almost a real emergency for him.

My first Long had a relief tube and my girlfriend fell for the 'talking telephone' trick! "EYEWWW!!" Was what she said when she realized what she wasn't holding a microphone. Heheheh.

  19. Yeh Yeh, What she said is better than what I said! I missed the fact that he wanted to powdercoat. I've only done three mount refurbs. The Gurls do multiple builds. The linseed oil leaking down my white (painted) mount did clue me in that it was cracked on my first Long-Ez. :envy:

  20. The screws are where you put in the linseed oil so the interior of the tube doesn't rust from the inside out. Inject it with a syringe. Blast away and use a good epoxy primer. Degrease thoroughly after playing with the linseed oil however. Or wait until it's painted to play with the oil. Have fun.
