Wheel bolts

I bought my front wheel from another builder, but it did not come with the bolts to hold it together, and there are no markings on the wheel to tell me the manufacturer.

 

There are three holes, and they are not threaded. An AN4-21 or 22 looks to be a good fit. Should I use a washer under the bolt head and under the nut? Should I use "shoulder" type locking nuts?

 

Any help woould be appreciated - thanks!

I got mine from Wicks on my way back from RR a year and a half ago. May be the same as yours, may not.

 

AN4-21 through bolt (no washer under the head), washer, then an AN363-428 hi-temp all metal lock nut.

Thanks Rick! I got the bolts and put the wheel, inner tube and tire together with a few pounds of pressure in it. Seems to be OK - good enough for me to continue working on the nose section, anyway! :cool:

Phil, I may be talking out of my innertube here, but I seem to remember that there were two types of nosewheels available. One from Ken brock, that I think was in more than two parts (I have never seen one) and the Gerdies wheel that was available from ACS. Why don't you send a picture to us so that we can identify it.

 

The bolts on a wheel are somewhat important as you will be blowing about 70# of pressure into that little bladder.

 

I think that in the railroad business they use much less pressure than that to lift railroad cars back onto the track.

 

You don't want a failure here as it will probably happen on landing.

 

The bolts are probably AN3 or 4s but make sure. If it is the Gerdies, the Cozy Girlllllllllllls have a lot of experience as they take the sow's ear that was provided by the Gerdies factory and with a little machining, create a silk purse.

The bolts I bought are AN4-21 and I got the high temp locking nuts. The wheel is two halves, with tapered roller bearings. There are three bolt holes with no threads. The AN4 bolts are a good fit - no slop.

 

I put the inner tube into the tire and added a little air so that there would be no wrinkles. Then I put the two wheel halves together so that the valve stem went through matching half-circles in the hub and out through one of the wheel halves. Then I used a couple of C-clamps to squeeze the wheel halves together and inserted the bolts and started to tighten the nuts, working around the wheel so that it came together evenly.

 

If there is still some concern, I'll try to remember to take a picture and post it here. Thanks!

Adding to what Rich says, I noticed I only have one thread showing when drawn up 'hand' tight.

 

May be better to use an AN4-22 with a washer under the head to get two full threads, but I have to think on how many of these are flying with the 'factory' configuration. :o

 

Attached pix of mine FWIW, never installed. Wicks invoice says it's a Gerdes.
