  1. Greetings fellow Dragonfly Owners/Builders/Flyers ...

It is with mixed emotions that I have listed N39XD for sale on Ebay. I have not flown her in a few years and have a new project. (42' Catamaran in the Bahamas and Caribbean).

I wanted to post on the list before anyone sees it on Ebay and wonders what's up.

    Here is the listing ...

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/186298809233?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=MOeMbPwLRuS&sssrc=2524149&ssuid=MOeMbPwLRuS&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

It would be many years before I could get her down there so need to find her a new home.

Thanks for 20 plus years of support and friendship.

    Tom

  2.  Well.. the resume is long because I am a geezer now, but yes, I drove rivets all day long
on Lears starting when I was 18 years old, and later on I got "edimucated" and entered
into the Manufacturing Engineering world (went to the dark side and put on a white collar
shirt). Most of the time I was working the rejection corrections in the Shop. That way you
get to see all the ways NOT to screw up on airplanes.

I am from Wichita..and in those days and back then your choices were pretty much farm
wheat, work on cattle ranches, roustabout on oil and gas wells, or build airplanes. Since I am
crazy and love aviation like I do, I chose to drive rivets all day. It paid the bills and then some.

So..about alternatives.. Charlie and I both have Corvair engines. I dunno if the spinner is
similar size to what you have or not, but Corvair users go with what Van's has on the RV aircraft.
Right now there is a backlog (duh..they are in Chapter 11) but even then I think because your engine is narrower this would be too large for your needs.

Its good to mull these over tho.. keeps my mind going in circles which for me is good.

  3.  Hmmm.. that does tend to point to 1100 then. For our powerplants I am not so sure we
are out of the woods with Van's spinners now either. Everything is getting to be a real PIA
to obtain for various reasons or another.

I'm out of the M.E. job again, Charlie. I have not seen a cluster like that one was ever
before..and part of the mess was due to mills not producing common aircraft items anywhere
     near what was.

Gulfstream keeps bugging me to go back in Tulsa. Its composites, Nacelles and engine Cowlings.
I submitted but probably they are fishing again like they do this time of year.

  4. Hello Vern,

Thanks for your input- good points all around, some possibly might have been overlooked- you have given me a very good guide to work with.

Heat stresses from welding, not having a contour tool, smooth shank in the prop bolt holes, etch, alodine, prime, drill, deburr, assemble, countersink, which rivets to use, EMs, use a steel back plate, and flush shave and file the rivet butts. I had to re-read the 1/2” smooth steel drift- but I got it now.

It appears to me that you must have built an aluminum bird at some point along the way; not just a composite airplane. One friend who made my composite spinner 600 flight hours ago, told me that he would make me a composite front- and backplate. Thankfully, another friend came along who told me that that would not go over too well.

Are there any other backplates or other comments? Thanks again for all the input, I appreciate it.

    Tim

  5. Tim.. your best option on the MRB is to do both, weld the holes and add the doubler. The reason is that this is obviously a spun formed part. When doing that, the original blank was most likely in annealed condition (.063 probably 2024 in "O" condition) then the formed part was heat treated to reach at least a T3 condition.

Welding imparts inconsistent heat stresses and since you do not have the contour tool to planish this even if you did re-heat treat, the best option is to both re-enforce with a doubler AND weld the now not required holes.

This said.. assure that your prop mounting now uses bolts long enough to take into account the added .063" of the doubler.

Remember..no threads allowed in the shear plane for these bolts!! Your prop bolts must be all smooth shank in the prop bolt holes. AC 43-13B makes this point as well.

Etch, Alodine 1200, and epoxy prime on the "fay surfaces" of the doubler and backplate prior to riveting. Last thing you want is corrosion in this area. It is best to drill the new prop bolt hole locations, then deburr the holes, then assemble. This lessens the chances of crack propagation from vibration.

Countersink, and I would use use AN 3-4 "AD" rivets for this job. Keep your EM's (Edge Margin) legal on the assembly rivets. On the backing plate side use the rivet manufactured head on a clean flat steel plate, the doubler can be slight countersunk (50% deep is sufficient), and the rivet butts hammer driven, then shaved flush. A smooth steel drift around 1/2" diameter will work well to set the AD rivets. Not too much hammering. You probably don't have a rivet shaver like we use in the aircraft factories but just be careful not to remove the al clad. Consider how when you assemble the easiest way to flush shave the rivet butts after final assembly.

A clean flat sharp mill file will make short work of the shaving operation.

  6. Hello Chris,

Welding the backplate might be an option for me, yet I have a second set of holes 30 degrees advanced of the original holes so the backplate is very used at this point. Also, I thought of making an .063” thick 6” round plate and flush riveting it to the outside of the backplate, or doing a combination of the two processes.

I don’t want to modify the cowl at this point if I don’t have to; what I prefer is to locate a backplate that is out there so I can put to use on my plane.

    Thanks for your suggestions,

    Tim

  7. Fellow builders, fliers and enthusiasts,

I have upgraded from a HAPI to a Revmaster engine. This required a change from an old 4" prop bolt pattern to a new 4-3/8" prop bolt pattern. Pictured here is the old backplate that I was able to mount after enlongating the holes. The new SAE-1 crush plate is installed but the frontplate is not shown in these pictures

Most other backplates are flat in nature. What I need for a replacement rises from the flange edge approximately 2-1/4” to the back of the prop. Do you know where I can locate a backplate like this? A flat backplate will separate the cowl from the backplate by 2-1/4”, so that won’t work for me.

If anyone has, or knows of this type of backplate (and frontplate) please let me know.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  10. Terry, I would love to have our Dragonfly. I have sold my Dragonfly which I never flew but had all but one wheel off the ground and have flown a couple. I sold my Glasir II FT and my wife's Cessna 150 with a n O-320 that I put in it and am going to part with the Starduster II that I bough partially finished in 1982. Need a project. I live on 19AZ in Camp Verde, AZ and the hangar is in my back yard.I have a dismantled 0200  and would enjoy a Dragonfly. It would be a few weeks before I could come and get it but I would love to finish i.
