  1. Finished and hung canard, more nose jobs, built a more level work table, finished main spar, working on a wing. I figure the wings will carry me through December.  Really wish I could edit and update the original post

  2. I just had to redo my turtle back, I am putting a lancair canopy instead of the standard similar to what Buly did with his, it is six inches wider at the seat back and tapers to the standard firewall. I like the look and it also gives a lot more headroom without adding height. I cut my wings over the winter and am planning on starting to assemble them soon. I hope to have my fiberglassing done by the end of summer as I teach and it gets really cold here in the winter. I also have my cowls and molds for them, if you want to make a pull off of them you are welcome. Are you going to oshkosh this year? I am about 6 hours drive west and you can make your cowls.

    Les,

We're going to Oshkosh for the first time this year. Very excited it's a lifelong bucket list thing for me. We're flying in however. Would love to hear more about the lancair canopy, have any photos?

  3. Thanks compliments guys. I've come to realize that logistics is my least favorite activity on this project. Everything goes great until something gets backordered. The past few months have been:

    * Start the canard, but run out of spar cap tape, now the canard takes up my workshop table while I wait

    * Spar cap tape is backordered everywhere in the world, ok

    * Move onto elevator chapter, finish elevator

    * Move onto nose chapter, okay still waiting on nose lift parts

    * Can't buy the Oelmann pedals any more, so I have to figure out how to make those, deal with that for a while

    * Now I'm stuck, can't move forward with canard, elevator, canard install, nose, or even main spar

    * Start gathering parts for control system

    * Jack comes through with nose lift and sells me some spare spar cap tape he has from the 90s

    * Now I'm finishing off the canard finally!

    * Oh and by the way, ACS still has my spar cap tape on BO, along with about a dozen other parts 2-3mo later.

    * The point is really driven home when I see how easy my RV buddy has it with parts logistics

Hopefully now things are unstuck for a while. I'm hoping have the canard & elevator done and installed and the nose lift installed and working before Oshkosh.

  4. You're smoking!

With installing the fuel sight gauges, it is a good time to epoxy an LED with a pigtail that can be wired later for a fuel light.  I just dremel a small inverted "U" in the clear part of the site gauge and embed an LED aimed upward. It just needs to shine into the edge of the gauge to work.  Polish the edges of the "U".  Mark the leads so you will get the polarity correct later.  Any old white or red LED will do.  You could do it later but a good time is after the clear guage has been glued on but before the BID surround is added.  I love LEDs.  Low power, no heat, last forever.

    I love this idea!

  5. Looks pretty good. I see you made your own pedals. Good for you! Here is a way to make the linkage to the master cylinders, for your consideration. http://www.canardzone.com/forum/topic/18661-kents-long-ez-project/?p=60524

    Kent,

Great suggestion. I had a hell of a time trying to fabricate the plans sliding clevis and eventually just put it on the backburner for now. Your way seems easier. I also like the way Wayne Hicks did his as well, Two u channels welded back to back.
