I ran across copies of the Varieze plans at this website https://vdoc.pub/documents/burt-rutan-varieze-aircraft-plan-d1-4r17i2m7qe10 including templates, builder manual and POH. They appear to be good plans and I'll post them here in a couple of formats. Just to review the status of copied plans, Burt Rutan said many years ago that he did not object to people building from copied plans but he asked that they not call these airplanes a Long-ez or Varieze to protect his liability. Of course Rutan Aircraft Factory closed long ago and there is no formal support for the Varieze but there is plenty of informal support. The Canard Pushers are still available (see http://www.cozybuilders.org/ ) Many of the required parts can be obtained from current parts-sellers for the Cozy and Long-ez. (See "Other Reference Information - Authorized & Non-authorized suppliers" in the same cozybuilders site. With the price of avgas possibly going to $10.gallon or more. A design that can cruise on 4 gph seems quite a good idea again.vez2.rar Varieze_templates.zip A7.tif A6.tif VariEzeDrawings.pdf A4.tif A5.tif A1.tif A2.tif A3.tif A8.tif A9.tif burt-rutan-varieze-aircraft-plan-d1_compress.pdf
  2. I am looking to purchase a Cozy Mk iii that has been upgraded to an O-320 Lycoming. However, the aircraft was never put back into "phase 1" to validate a new max gross weight. The POH, therefore, is still advertising 1500 lbs (1600 max under certain conditions). Currently I'm told the empty weight is 1136 lbs and I'm concerned about that narrow of a useful load. Has anyone gone through this process? If so, what were you reasonably able to achieve? Would the gear be able to handle 1800lbs? Any performance considerations with the increase? Thank you in advance!
  3. I'm new to the forum and have always been interested in the Vari and Long EZ. Right now I'm more interested in the VariEze since it doesn't require a high HP Lycoming, but still seems like a fast efficient XC plane. I was wondering where I would be able to find plans for the VariEze? Do builders usually go with an O-200 or VW engine? Thanks -Mark
  4. Hi - I'm looking to replace the center hub of my VariEze Brock nose wheel. (not the wheel halves, just the center hub). I just replaced the bearings, and on one side the bearing race, rather than getting press-fit tightly, rotates. I figure I better get another. Thanks, Sean Gillen, Arlington Tx
  5. As someone who was fired up by Canards to become a pilot I have wanted VariEze or LongEz earrings. Since most of my $$$ has gone into learning to fly I am making my own. Will I be messing on anyone's past creative efforts if I use either the COBA emblem of a VariEze or the shadow outline decal shape of a LongEz? If it's not OK I'll just draw the symbol for me only to wear. If it's ok to use it I'll show what I've drawn at a local craft show in Tallahassee Antique Automobile Museum March 20, 2021. In either case I'll bring some of the jewelry to Rough River & donate it. Am I messing on anyone official or unofficial copywright?
  6. I'm new to the forums, so I hope I have this in the correct place. I've got a strong pitch trim motor, that runs on a lead screw into some kind of cylinder/shock. My trim motor "ratchets", sounds like a cordless drill when it reaches max torque. I can move the cylinder by hand, but it's pretty stiff. So I screwed it all the way down and cleaned the screw and put a little oil on it, but it didn't help. It has safety wire on both ends and overall it looks like it's seen better days. I'd prefer to maybe disassemble and thoroughly clean it, but I have this vision of the shock shooting out and me never getting this back together again! I thought I could replace the cylinder, but I have no clue on what it is or where to find it. I tried to go to www.strongpitchtrim.com but got some odd website. ANY help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
  7. Hi! I purchased a partially complete project from an estate and, unfortunately, what plans weren't lost were trashed and thrown away. Am planning on the Terf CD, but am thinking a set of plans with templates might be better. Any and all help is appreciated. Am located in Michigan and am also looking for any local builders or groups of builders to team up with. Thank you! Best regards, Chris
  8. Hi Everyone, I am a pilot looking to build my own aircraft but have no experience doing so. I came across a listing today for an VariEze that a guy is trying to get rid of. Not sure if it was ever completed but the pictures will show the status now. 90 % complete with all Ailerons , gauge panel, engine cowls, canopy, disc brakes, most all the rigging has been done Wanted to know if there is potential here (whether salvaging parts or restoring) or if I am out of my mind for even considering it. Thanks in advance. Charles
  9. Hi - I'm about to retrofit my VariEze with an external fixed foot step. <fixed, not retractable> Could someone possibly please scan the LongEz plans page which has the drawing/details for that external step? Thanks and regards, Sean Gillen Arlington, Tx
  10. Hi All; Before I call Dynon or start pulling things out from behind the panel, I wanted to know if anyone has had a similar experience. I have a Dynon D10 installed in my Vari panel, and have had no issues. Today, though, I powered it up and....nothing. There was a perhaps 1/10 second blink of the screen, then it was black. I do have the backup battery installed, so theoretically it should have switched to that immediately upon turning the main power off. Nothing. Fuse checks good, and other instruments on the panel (Main and Avionics bus) are working fine. Sound familiar to anyone? I read something last night about disconnecting the backup batt and retrying.....then the next step seems to be call Dynon and get ready to ship. Thanks for any pointers or "I-did-this-and-it-was-all-better" stories. Brian N369MS KSMX
  11. I wanted to spread the word about our new film “Looking Up, Way Up! The Burt Rutan Story,” and our Kickstarter fundraising effort that launched today!! It will enable us to capture Rutan’s creative process as he designs, builds and test flies his newest aircraft. As Scott B says about the top secret project, “It will be a game changer.” https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/antennafilms/looking-up-way-up-the-burt-rutan-story Please, donate to our campaign and help us capture the community spirit of ‘homebuilt’ aircraft that gave Rutan his first success. antennaFILMS is helmed by Sandy Guthrie and Scott B, two award-winning filmmakers honored for the Discovery Channel television special Black Sky: The Race For Space. We have continued to film with Burt over the years, including for the National Geographic show Virgin Galactic: Will It Fly?, and have started filming him specifically for this documentary in 2012. After you donate, spread the word, it is as easy as following the link below. http://lookingupwayup.com/get-the-kickstarter-out Thank you very much, we have some great rewards and collectables for those who donate, and I have attached some fun photos to spread the word. FYI - we have one donation reward that lets you send in a photo of you in fron of a Rutan plane, or someone else for that matter and get it in the film. Sincerely, Aaron Howell antennaFILMS
