  1. Saw this in the last issue of EAA Experimenter newsletter: http://www.engineerlive.com/Design-Engineer/Power_Transmission/Magnets_offer_advantages_as_an_alternative_to_mechanical_gears/22078/ Seems like a viable alternative to geared reduction drives. I hope somebody develops these for aircraft use.
  2. If you think about it, as altitude increases, air molecules are farther apart. So, at a given true airspeed (TAS) across the ground, fewer molecules are hitting the aircraft (and the pitot tube) the higher up you go. So, indicated airspeed (IAS) will be less the higher you go even though your true airspeed is the same. This might be kind of a backwards way of looking at it, but it works for me! Structural and aerodynamic limits for aircraft are based on IAS because that is how fast the aircraft thinks it is going - based on the number of air molecules that are hitting it. It doesn't matter how fast you are actually moving across the ground. Again, all this is assuming a no-wind scenario. TAS corrected for wind is your groundspeed (GS). Hope this helps.
  3. Hoping to go if I'm not in training. Chances are, I'll probably be in Texas.
  4. That's at the aviation museum outside of McConnell AFB in Wichita, isn't it? I've been there, interesting place.
  5. I've thought about how it would be nice to have a small surveillance-type camera mounted in the top inboard side of one of the winglets, pointed toward the back of the plane. The main use would be for engine start, so you could make sure nobody is wandering close to your prop. Secondary use would be to check on the engine in flight in case you suspect fire or some other problem (trailing smoke).
  6. I'm still trying to convince my wife to go to RR this year, but I have a few questions. I wrote a few posts a while back, but have not been active on this forum for a while. The main reason is that we had another kid and I've been in the middle of Air Force pilot training. I still hope to build a Cozy one day, and would like to make it to RR this year while it's still within driving distance. Here are a couple of questions for discussion: Is there anyone with a room reserved there who is not planning on going? I called today and they said the only room available was smoking. Or, if you are a smoker and would not mind switching rooms, let me know. If I come, it will probably only be for Saturday and I'll have to bring the whole crew... wife, 3 yr old boy, and baby girl. I know there is not much age-appropriate stuff for the kids, but I was wondering if anyone else will have young'uns there. Bringing the wife without the kids is just not feasible at this point, and the main reason I want my wife to go is to get an idea of what a Cozy really is and find out more about it. Also, what is the best time to be there for meeting people and looking at planes (and possibly getting rides!)? I still might not be able to come based on some other factors (like possibly moving to a new house), but we'll see. Hope to see you guys there!
  7. Is anybody flying through the East Mississippi/West Alabama area on the way to RR? Not sure if I'll be able to go yet, but the chances might increase if I have the possibility of a ride. Of course, I'd help with gas money.
  8. Currently in Air Force pilot training, probably going to fly the heavies. I have a wife and 2 small kids. I've been wanting to build a Cozy IV for a few years now, hoping to start as soon as time, finances, location, and spouse allow. Probably build a fairly standard Cozy, with a few modifications. Although... I've had an itch recently to buy a Quickie Q1 and convert it to run on electrical power like they are doing with those electric planes recently. It's about the same hp requirement, I think that would be a lot of fun. However, I'd rather have a plane I can take my wife and/or kids in.
  9. So I take it Sun-N-Fun is not a big destination for canards? Do you think attendance was down in general compared with previous years? I guess the economy might have something to do with it.
