  1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_AJD-V6/PSA_DT17 Then theres the Ford V6 and V8 Diesels. 150 and 200KW respectively. Block is new-technology compacted graphite iron (CGI) that leads to a low weight of 202 kg dry (not sure which engine that weight is for.) The engines are made in the UK, and rumoured to be made soon in the US, so availability and pricing might be better than from DM. Steve p.s howdy all. Yes, still alive.
  2. Since you ask, in my culture such a remark is taken the way it was intended and results a large guffaw from the crowd, and this is a multi-cultural, international forum - not your-culture-only. In NZ, friends rib each other all the time, and it is bad form to inadvertently accuse them of meaning harm by it. fatty However, I am informed that since I am not a builder I have little or no credibility so I will withdraw. ciao. S
  3. aw cmon my remark wasnt meant that way. I'll delete it. edit: aw I can't delete or edit it. You might have noticed that I included myself in the same category. sorry.
  4. cough, did everyone get this ? Without mincing words, if you have a fat ass and a fat guts and you are over 40yrs of age then forget aviation because you won't be a pilot for long. You will live longer flying small planes. Lose some weight, fatty. Steve (230LBs)
  5. Yes indeed, I concur. Much theory is quite worthless alongside practice. For myself, I wouldn't even have a MB, AND I'm not building. Yet. S
  6. Yes, but quite likely in theory and not in practice. Here's the theory ; Half-wave center-fed dipole antennas radiate (almost) equally in all directions, except they have a strong null off their tips. Case 1 - If you orient the antenna longitudinally it will have a strong null forward and aft of the aircraft and a strong peak below (and above). This in theory amplifies the effect of "searching the ground for the beacon" because it is hunting for it with a directional antenna. Case 2 - If you orient the antenna crosswise it will have a strong null off its' tips and a strong peak forward and aft, effectively rounding off the "peak" effect as you approach and cross the beacon. (unless you are flying wingtip first) I have not read the beacon system specification but it would logical to me to use a horizontally, forward/aft oriented antenna to maximise the system sensitivity. http://www.google.com/search?q=dipole+radiation+pattern That's the theory - in practice these nulls and peaks just aren't that sharp, and quite likely it would be difficult to tell two installed systems apart. I would go with case 1. With regards to recreationally flying VFR aircraft, I think GPS is much easier. E&OE, YMMV, FWIW, FIIK. S For those who care, I have been involved with radio for thirty years. Had my ham ticket when I was 13 y/o.
  7. we dont have dr pepper here, but occasionally we get a similar mince pie problem. S
  8. so all this time you thought they were imagined ? S
  9. I would like to suggest this is an error in perception. My *guess* is these folks didn't want to talk about money because they did not care whether they recovered their own cash or not. Maybe you are correct, as I wasn't there, but if you are not then you have drawn a fairly solid conclusion on the basis of your perception. I have discovered this often proves to be very wrong. Lecture withheld. S
  10. aww don't feel discouraged Remi. I think there was too much said about the food by too many who didn't actually put any work into it. It's always a little uncomfortable when money needs to be talked about even when it's just a small amount. Anyway, it's imperative the feeling of the event is not lost and strong feelings do not overrun it, so maybe a new plan is required. It was a bold idea to shout everyone lunch. S
  11. I always buff the braking surfaces with 36 grit sandpaper before assembling brakes. Scratch all the shine off the shoes/pads and drums/discs and they work much much better. Buff is not really the right word - I scrape hell out of them working 90 degrees to the direction of travel. If they are shoes, then bevel the leading edge a few mm as well.. stops new shoes from grabbing and chattering. S
  12. Hi Remi ! It is good to hear from you also. No, we are not so well these days m'fraid, but we are still alive and trying to solve the more mountainous crises. We will come out of it in one piece - I am determined. In the meantime - how to distract myself with some inexpensive game. edit: oh camping, we spent an evening on a remote surf beach last week. It was very relaxing - miles from nowhere. Took a skillet and a pack of sausages and cooked up over an open fire. 4WD country only. http://meshnetworks.co.nz/~steve/picture019.jpg Thanks for your kindness. Steve
  13. I haven't done that for these reasons ; 1.) ALL BUILDERS will qualify their own set of mods - wouldn't you ? 2.) The Wiki (or any document for that matter) does not preset facts - merely opinion! No person in their right mind is going to take facts(sic) from any one unqualified source (regardless of what authoritative manner it is presented in, or who the person says they are) and then ride their ass around the sky it.. would you ? 3.) Liability - if the Wiki presents 'facts' then the authors will have to stand by them, and then no one will contribute.. would you ? 4.) If you particularly concur, or dislike any particular page, then edit it attaching a section explaining why, and digitally sign it. Failing this, maybe digitally sign a mod that *you* fly. In any case, if you have something to say on any mod, then lets see you edit a page. You, or any person can make any changes, including deleting whole sections. so go hard. S
  14. Theres this page of mods for the Cozy MK-IV. http://canardaviationwiki.dmt.net/wiki/index.php/Cozy_MK-IV_Modifications Do feel free to add sections at will. Do not be concerned about typographical errors or formatting. There are many less experienced/qualified folks who just lurrrrrve to add formatting and pictures to your quality text, so jump right in. Making Wiki pages is *fun*. No, it's not my Wiki - I just like to work on it. S
  15. Yeah I will block people who are hostile towards me. I don't care. Likely they will do the same - It's a free Internet. If you are interested you should read all about mr hicks so-called religious convictions, then witness the brutal manner he turned upon me. Godly ? - I do not think so mr hicks. I respect (and use) his work, but he will not approach me in a public forum. shrug. He (and anyone else) has never been blocked from the wiki - it is not my wiki to do so, it is yours. Blocking people feels like shooting a dog - I hate it. I don't want to fight. I approach everyone carefully with a civil tongue and a carefully worded paragraph, as you have seen. People who are deliberately or even inadvertantly rude will be dealt to severely. Either get used to it, or think before you speak. edit: "poof, with a few clicks of your mouse you locked Wayne out as a wiki contributor" This statement is incorrect. NO PERSON HAS EVER BEEN BLOCKED FROM THE WIKI. very angry.
  16. taking my text and turning back on me is particularly irritating. Don't do that again. GRR, NO ONE SAID NEWBS WERE COMPETANT. THAT IS THE WHOLE REASON THEY **GAIN** COMPETANCY BY ASKING IN PLACES LIKE THIS. THEY WILL MAKE THEIR OWN MIND UP, LIKE YOU DID. Growl
  17. re: wiki content and newbish utterings I think pilots and post-builders give themselves too much credit. When it was YOUR turn to build you put in due-diligence and examined everything on its' merits, and chose your own set of mods using the process of critical thinking, or whatever process you did use, but pre-builders are not completely stupid you know - they ARE going to approach the process in the same or similar way that you did, and if they don't then maybe you can influence that process.. But casting newbs as incompetent and dangerous and not being able to think for themselves is plain wrong - just as wrong as it was when it was your turn - they like staying alive too. Regarding Aviation content in a wiki, any person can digitally sign any content at any time even if they are not the author, but regardless of what tools we offer senior members of the aviation community, they still seem to regard the wiki with distaste and disgust - similar to the contempt they offer the ideas of non-builders. Enough thread hijacking.. If anyone wants to offer their contribution, or a new direction, simply edit the page concerned. We can't and don't want to do it all ourselves. reminder: My post starts with the words "I Think" - Opinion! S
  18. Jon, pleeeeease talk to me before you create another wiki. We have purposely left http://canardaviationwiki.dmt.net/wiki/ unmoderated until it had built a useful amount of content before we secured it so the cleaner couldn't hack it. That day is quickly approaching and we will move from bulk-content adding mode into "securing it and adding certainty" mode. S
  19. don't let it upset you, Ben. Let it go - it's just the Internet. You can't change it. S
  20. Yes indeed. There are other benefits as well, one of which is will put him back in place as father of the project - a position he now fears due to liability, and a position that we all endlessly respect him for... The man who spawned a whole new back-to-front way of thinking Well that is not my call, but I share your thoughts on this. This will be the last of my opinion on this for now, as the project leaders are no-doubt tiring of it. Kudos to the leaders and shakers - I am looking forward to your positive outcome. best, SteveWrightNZ
  21. Then we are right where we are now - "go do what ever you like -just dont call it a Long-EZ." perhaps, but that is speculation - he may approve if the right approach is made by the right people for the right reason. The right license completely removes his liabilty, in the future, and quite likely in the past as well. (OPINION!) It doesn't. Under the current situation that was simply his wishes - don't call it a Long-EZ. The only thing that will absolve him of responsibility is for him to give up his copyright (noooo!) and release it into the PD (OPINION!) or release it under a License that specifically excludes Liability, such as the GPLD. Under the GPLD, you have no right to download the plans to begin with if you intend to hold anyone responsible. If you DO attempt to hold anyone responsible you are in breach of the License conditions and therefore were never entitled to use them to begin with. In the GPL world, you can modify, rename, and distribute it as you wish - and the license specifically allows this, but you have to give recipients all the rights that you had when you downloaded it. Overall, the GPL is impressive in the permanent freedom it provides. No person can hijack the project. S
  22. I understand this. But there is a better way, and that is a proper Open License, viz GPLD. If the right people show this to Burt, and do it the right way, at the right time, it is possible, even likely, that everyone gets a lot more than they bargained for - Burt included, and that the LongEZ name stays up in lights forever - a marvelous thing to behold. S <OT>gak, how do I unsubscribe from a thread?
  23. This is the whole thing, exactly and precisely, in a nutshell, IMO. It may even be, that the Long/OpenEZ begins a new burst of life, on account that Burt is seen to publicly "Approve" of them being built. S
  24. Clearly they are, or were, his copyrighted work, no matter how it is viewed. no. and if its truely "open", yes. A GPL-style Open Project allows the Owner to retain Copyright, while distancing theirself from liability. Paraphrasing from gnu.org - "The simplest way to make a work free is to put it in the public domain, uncopyrighted. This allows people to share the work and their improvements, if they are so minded. But it also allows uncooperative people to convert the work into a proprietary product. They can make changes, many or few, and distribute the result as a proprietary product. People who receive the product in that modified form do not have the freedom that the original author gave them; the middleman has stripped it away." This is the main benefit from a proper Open License, such as the GPLD - that is, the work is "freed" into the public arena - it is free in terms of "free speech", not as in "free beer", that is, no person can restrict the rights or your copy. Any modified copy must be distributed with the same accompanying rights tha they had when they downloaded it. Under a GPL-type license, You may modify and even sell a set of plans if you choose, but you may not restrict the rights of the person who bought it from you. 25. No worries, but I think you are mistaken. Mikes' comment to me in a private email was "As it stands, i think it is the correct avenue to go to bring back the long EZ". We are all on the same Team, Jon, and it will be a tear in our eye also - the day that the OpenEZs' goals are achieved. best regards, SteveWrightNZ
