  1. Magnum I don't know how to put pictures onto this site so here is a link. www. If you go out to the last picture under the long ez you can see what I have. Make me an offer what ever you think its worth to you. The picture inst very good because I dropped my camera into the river but it still works, kind of. Wildbird
  2. I have a bunch of the old crank stuff I pulled out of my Long EZ to put in the electric gear. You can have it for short money if you're interested. I will look to see what I have. Wildbird
  3. You should consider buying Bruce's Vari-Eze not only his RR-O240 it is one of the nicest Vari Eze out there. Wild Bird
  4. Believe it or not I sell bird seed and rehabilitate injured squirrels. Thats why it is taking me so long to finish my plane. But I don't hate going to work every day. Wildbird

    Oil Cooler

thanks a lot that makes much more sense to me. The picture is worth a 1000 words, nice looking job by the way. Wildbird N227EZ

    Oil Cooler

Do most of you mount the oil cooler directly to the lower cowl? It seems to me someone must have come up with some sort of solution so that you can remove the lower cowl with out disturbing the oil cooler.
  7. Bruce Stephens has a 0 time Factory new RR-O-240 for sale. That is the dream engine for the Vari-Eze If I'm not mistaken it is the weight of an O-200 but is 140HP This engine was slated to go into a VAri-Eze but the economy changed all that. I can get you his contact info if you would like, he is in MA. Wild Bird
  8. I bought a conical engine mount for an O-235 from the Cozy girls. It uses a different rubber bushing than called out for in the plans. The plans call for a 3/8 bolt and it has a 1/2 inch steel sleve that is inside the rubber bushing, and requires 220-320 inch pounds of torque. The engine mount I have uses 1/2 inch bolts and has no rubber sleve inside the rubber bushings. A Cessna 152 has a similar set up and the tourque reqirements are 450-500 inch pounds. With out the sleve it seems like it would crush the rubber bushings to oblivian. Any help would be appreciated. Wild Bird

    Spa hole

I think I will go with my original Idea and make a conduit of some sort and come out of the spar box and down into the hell hole and out the fire wall that way. The previous owner mounted the strobe pack in side and down the right side of the spar box about a foot and half down the right side. It is mounted with 4 #10 screws that penetrate the back of the spar and screw into nut plates that are riveted to the strobe pack. They are accessible from within the cowl. That would not have been my choice, and was also a concern. But with that said the the installation was done neatly and the plane has more that 400 hours of flight time and everything look perfect.

    Spa hole

I was wondering if any one knows if it is acceptable to drill two 3/8 inch holes from within the spa box behind the seat, either through the bottom into the hell hole or directly through the fire wall. I plan to mount some censors for the engine monitor in this area. I need to make 2 maybe 3 small hole to run the wiring back to the engine. My gut tells me it would not be a good idea to drill the spa but the plans depict only one ply of bid inside the box and two plies outside the box in this area. The other option is to run the wires out of the access hole and around and through the access hole into the hell hole. But it will require much more work to make this option neat and well done. 11. Mike I made 2 taper pins that fit into the canopy with a spring loaded receptacle that is mounted on the stringer. When you shut the canopy the tapered pins fit into their respective receiver and center the canopy. It works slick. I had a machinist friend make me 5 pins and receivers and ended up only using two. I paid $300.00 bucks for them and I have 3 left. If you are interested I will let 2 go cheep and I will keep a spare for my self just in case. If you go out to wildbird.zenfolio.com and look at picture 57 and 58 you can see them. Obviously they were only roughed in at this point. WildBird

    Elt

Any recommendation on a 406Mhz ELT? They are so expensive! About the least expensive I can find is the Ameri-king AK-451w/whip for $869.00 I guess if you crash and survive you wont think its so expensive. Wild Bird
  13. The rear knob is carb heat. I haven't done anything fancy its mostly a stock ez except for the rear efis, electric gear and speed brake. It has an O-253 with a carb and mags how boring. But I am using a silver bullet prop with ken millers Hershey kiss spinner. Wild Bird
  14. HI guys I thought you might like to see how I decided to do my throttles. I wanted a throttle in the back because I spend a lot of time in the back seat. I used the Bowden push pull cables and and baxter quadrants. I am not very good with the computer and I don't know how to shrink the images to post them on the forum. But you can see the pictures at the link below. Keep up the good work Wildbird onhttp://www.wildbird.zenfolio.com
  15. Kraig: I pulled out a manual gear from my long ez to put in the electric gear.If you want it for short money its yours, Hows $50.00 sound? I can box it up and ship it to you I'll pay the freight. Wild Bird
  16. I made my canopy latch very similar to the one in the photo. I also use a spring to latch it shut but I also attached a cable that goes to the back seat. From the back seat you can pull a knob similar to a cabin heat knob that when pulled it pulls down on the lever and realeases the latch. I then moved the canopy safety catch just forward of the roll over structure so that it can be easily reach from the front or the back seat. It works like a charm no more stuck in the back seat. 17. The alcohol sounds like a great idea I would like to hear some more feed back on this subject. But I must agree with the last post about putting more on and sanding once. I used a small trowel heated with a heat gun it made life much easier. It seemed to work well when the trowel was too hot to touch and it needed to be heated often. I was going to try one of the small Irons that you use to shrink fabric but I never got around to getting one WildBird
  18. I ordered a pair of custom made throttles from Baxter. They will have throttle ,mixture and carb heat up front and throttle and mixture in the back. If I decide not to put the mixture in the back I can eliminate it. I decided to put 2 guarded mag witches on the canopy side of the rollover structure so that they are accessible from the rear seat also. I don't think the mixture is necessary in the back it was more that I don't like being stuck in the back with out a way to kill the engine if necessary, but moving the mag switches to the roll over structure resolved that issue. Some of this comes from many years ago before starters and electric gear. I had a Vari-Eze and you would put your passenger in with the nose down, then hand prop the engine, run around the plane, crank the nose up and jump in. All this was going on while I or whom ever was in the back had no way to kill the engine if necessary. That has all changed with the electric gear and the starter. Any way I would be interested in how you made the flexible cables work both the front and rear locations. I plan to use push pull stiff cables not the flexible cable like my Brock arrangement has now. Wildbird
  19. A good friend of mine who has a fully IFR RV suggested the IC-A200 with a sigtronics sport 200 intercom. He said that is all I would need to for day VFR for short money. From the last post it sounds like I wouldn't need to spend the $199.00 for the intercom. Thanks Wildbird
  20. Like most people I'm trying to get my EZ in the air on budget, which is already blown. Does anyone have a com recommendation; I was looking into either an Icom IC-A200 with an inexpensive intercom or a Becker AR 4201.
  21. Great job its nice to see that some one else is suffering also. Keep up the good work. I have a few pics on my photo site also if you are interestedwww.wildbird.zenfolio.com
  22. My friend has built 2 IFR RV's and swears by Grand rapids. I chose to put the GR sport in my Ez altho it is not flying yet so I cant say but I have flown the RV and was very impressed with the GR. I also installed a panel for the GIB you can see some pics onwww.wildbird.zenfolio.com Good Luck
  23. I just ordered a set of throtles that are in Aircraft spruce. I forgot the manufatures name but they come highly recomended. I did not get them from Spruce but bought them directly from the manufatuer. I also wanted push pull and I also plan to install mixter and trottle in the back seat. I have the information at home if you would like it. I ordered them last week and they are being custom made for the back seat. If you would like to know how they work out contact me directly and I will get you the info as soon as I get them in. Good Luck Wildbird
  24. I don't like the Brock set up either I would much prefer push pull cables rather than bicycle brake cables. I may leave the Brock set up in place for the carb heat but change out the mixture and throttle to something resembling a piper set up. I was checked out in a Vari Eze over 20 years ago and have some back seat time with low time Carnardians up front. It would have been nice to have a throttle in the back if only for peace of mind. I have installed a Grand Rapids glass cockpit in the back along with electric speed brake, trim and gear. I also plan to install a shielded mag switch. If need be except for rudders and brakes it can be landed from the back seat, retract the gear and kill the engine. Thanks for the help Wildbird

    Rear throttle

My next project is to put a rear throttle in my Long Ez. I know people have done this before so rather than re inventing the wheel does any one have photos or drawings I could upload. Wildbird
