  3. pneumatics not a good choice. Reliability poor in cold weather. Blow an internal O ring on one of these cylinders and you will be screaming

  6. CF spar caps.....the bend-to-yeild charactaristics of these over fiberglass are different. I am a big fan of a light bird though, and I would personally like to use carbon in a few other areas but......it's a precious material to experiment with,

  9. thats right edge, you change the dynamics when you lengthen the tub. I thought this through before stretching, and I know I won't be carrying around ballast like a cozy. I just wanted the extra room in the back for luggage!!

  11. That was an interesting short article on the v-8 conversion, seems he addressed many areas where weight became the issue. I am personally going with the 13b with crook redrive. I am stretched 13" (firewall to canard) and will undoubtedly have some fun when it comes to weight/balance stage. The doggone fuel burn is good, and camII racing fuel could easilly be exchanged for the 100ll. On pint engine oil in 4800 miles is absolutely awesome. I am wondering how he is capping his RPM? Rev limiting?
  12. Can't help but think I saw a velocity at RR last year with a spanky V-8. Had a fighter rumble, but remember seeing heat blemishes on the prop where the hot waste came out of the cowl. Only drawback I see is loss of coolant at altitude........doubt it would keep purring like a rotary would. Funny thing, I thought the fuel burn at 200 would be closer to 16 than six:D

  15. Benifits of the design? (Hum) Supposing you cannot glean sufficiant power from one piston per cylinder? I am thinking that the distribution of power to the crank at two points is of little benifit......perhaps a nice power plant for a irrigation pump?

  19. *****Arrived back home from assignment in washington D.C. and, on the doorstep, was my freshly fabricated engine mount for a Mazda 13B!! Inside the generously constructed shipping crate was the base for my winter project......powerplant. Thanks go out to cozy girls for knocking this little item out in quick time.........it will offer an excellent diversion from laying floor tile!
  20. Flying off the 40 at this airport would not be the end of the world, but it would establish a precedence which other airports might follow=not good. It was unfortunate, tragic, a black eye to all GA aircraft. To single out experimental aircraft as unsafe would be like declaring the FAA whom deem them safe for flight testing are unqualified as well. This guy has a bone to pick, wonder what he would say if a G5 went down in similar fashion?
  21. Hding ones landing gear inside the aircraft post departure has its benefits, and with a composite canard aircraft this whole idea poses a multitude of problems. It would be easy to speculate that for every 1000 aircraft, perhaps 2 might have retractable mains? These are experimental aircraft, and designing a set of retracts which will handle shock loads of landing and still hide seemlessly away inside the aircraft presents a sizeable challenge. There are a couple options out there for "out of the box" gears sets, none of them are without their own shortcomings. Stationary gear legs with nice pants are the easiest and most cost effective method of solving the question of retracts or not., if you just have to have retracts, good luck!
