Aclouston Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 The project I just acquired has the top longerons at 43.5" over the mlg axle centers. The water line supposedly being at 23" that equates to having my axles at -20.5 instead of -22.5" per plans. I have just have the open fuselage weight (no engine, strakes or canopy) on the mlg, nothing else. The mlg is a Long ez gear installed by the original owner. I'm wondering if I'm not going to have a clearance issue with the prop? If not take off clearance at least picking up lots of debris while taxiing. Also I have the front strut in S-glass only for the front gear. It measures 27.5" long. I don't have clear information to indicate that this is the Ve strut or the Le strut. I just read in the Le manual that The NG1L is 1" longer and beefier than the NG1. Can anyone confirm this? (I'll pull my Le full size elevation dwgs to compare it). Allan Quote Allan Varieze #2089
Kent Ashton Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Here is a pic (png format) of Long-EZ dimensions from a plan I was working on. The height dimensions are taken from Long-EZ plans which apparently are about the same as a Varieze. I suppose Burt took his Varieze and widened it to make the Long-EZ. The top of the Long-EZ longeron is at 23", the axles are at -22" and the ground is about -27. (-22" and half a 500x5 tire). From experience with a Long-EZ, I doubt you will have any problem with prop clearance. The canard will be frighteningly high above the horizon before the prop hits the ground. I drew this in ViaCAD but I could probably export it in a DWG/DXF format. Hope that answers your question. 🙂 Quote -KentCozy IV N13AM-750 hrs, Long-EZ-85 hrs and sold
Aclouston Posted January 11 Author Posted January 11 Gee! A reply. I hope you were doing well these past few weeks? Thank you for the info. Since posting, I found in the pile of docs and within I found a 1 page RAF instruction on how to install the Le gear on a Ve. This now settles the first issue I had; can this fuselage be completed as a Le? Ans: No. The mlg has been cut 3" (per instructions). Repositioning would mean ALOW and still would not give back the missing height. A new gear would be required because stretching the tabs (or lowering the extrusions would expose the mlg attach points to the airflow. So problem solved; It's going to be VariEze. Cool! Uhm.. Are Ve props smaller? I wonder. Quote Allan Varieze #2089
