What do you guys/gals do to get an engine? Can you recommend one place over another? I believe a brand new engine is significantly more expensive than a rebuilt? Is it even possible to get an engine nowadays?

Yep, new Lycoming engines are hugely expensive.  If I were buying an engine today I would monitor aircraft salvage companies and look for a medium-time engine from a wrecked airplane.  There are probably salvage companies in Europe but I don't know them.  Some of the planes they get are storm-damaged so the engine is probably intact.  https://www.wentworthaircraft.com/engines/      I imagine their inventory goes up every time there is a hurricane in the U.S.

20 years ago I got a good price on an engine from   https://www.aerosportpower.com/custom-aircraft-engines       It had a reconditioned case, new cam, crank and cylinders.

It is good to understand the different models and know whether you want one with mags and a carb or you will supply your own electronic ignitions and fuel system.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lycoming_Engines

I rebuilt a run-out Lycoming once.  I sent the cases to Divco and the metal parts to Aircraft Specialties and put it together myself.
