Sales I've seen

Condition/Annual = Condition/al 😉  - yes Marc making fun of my errors....

So per FAA records it Does have AW 07/23/1984 - so one would be able to get a duplicate copy.

You MAY be able to reach Don Yoakam to see if he found the logs (build logs not as critical as flying logs - however it would be piece of mind for certain to know that it was built to plans with no deviations!  I do not think they had cameras back in the 80's so logs would only be written notation (just kidding, you never know..).

For 10k - you MIGHT have a good starting point - a condition or pre-buy from someone like Marc would be a smart thing to do unless you KNOW what you are looking for on these birds.

Layers of paint either tells me that repairs were made, was parked on a ramp tied down, or had creative colors along its life...  Prob smart to get down to first primer or last fill and save 20-50 lbs or more...

Chain of custody SEEMS feasable - it just would need to be done.

Does not say much about engine other than "was not pickled"... so...

Thinking "big OLD white elephant"...

You only need chain of custody if the Bill of Sale doesnt match the Registration, then you need BOS chain to go back to who the FAA knows owns it.

I guess you still havent gotten your Varieze debacle fixed as you still think it cant be done.

FWIW. I own one airplane that had the Airworthiness paper "missing". Non event, FAA sent a new one.

My other airplane I just bought, was a de-registered from the original builder, next owners had the DAR come inspect and give a new plane airworthiness and paperwork. Sounded pretty easy.

Hope you get yours sorted out some day...

@pilothicks,

My Varieze debacle is not regarding the registration (I did get the chain of custody worked out). my challenge was that I was told it was a flying airplane (and it looks like it had from the wear marks on the controls and pilot elbow areas).  However - FAA did not have AWC date in records and claims it never had.

Yes - the way of getting a plane new airworthiness working thru a DAR is exactly what I need to do with mine (If FAA does not have one on record).  I have talked to 5 different DARs about hypotheticals to understand what they need in my area...   Being that most are not familiar with fiberglass moldless construction - they were wanting to see build logs and validation of what parts were built in a factory.

To get the chain of custody for THIS opportunity - if one could get hold of Michael Vendi and have HIM fill out the paperwork to transfer ownership to the new buyer, that is all the FAA _needs_.  The fact that it was being held onto in storage by Don Morris is not material (from an FAA perspective) (as explained to me by the FAA HQ).

I will not get into the mess of what an outstanding bank lien on record can do to this effort (a friend of mine told me his horror story!)

So... bottom line: Need to make certain one buys a safe airplane AND can managed the paperwork for owner transfer and AW.

After all - it is not the plane - it is the pitot.

good sounds like the DARs are working with you.

Yes, I have a pretty good feeling with my current direction (and advice that has been provided).  But until I have that AWC - every second and penny I spend fixing this VariEze is a risk.

This plane had an off-field landing on a road back in 2015 due to fuel exhaustion - had some wing damage that took Rich many years to get repaired, as it was down in NC, away from home in LI and Rich has studiously avoided being part of any canard community or organization, for reasons unclear to me.

I believe that one of the folks that he took the plane to (although I DON'T know if it was the person who actually performed the repairs or built a new wing - don't know which happened) was Dave Hanson. Nuff Said - Caveat Emptor. Might be perfectly fine, but the prospective buyer will have to ask a lot of questions about the repairs and who did them.

I asked for more pics and the details he sent included the tires are from 2008 and still good. It’s enough to make me run away

Old tires are what scared you? Seems like misplaced priorities to me...

Yeah I should definitely write the check to a guy that says 18 year old tires are still serviceable. I’m sure the rest of the plane is tip top after his careful assessment. Especially with fiberglass repairs involved 🙄

This is less than an hour away from me. It's very tempting, but I know very little about these planes. What do you guys think?

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I sent a list of questions to the seller and never heard back, and now there is a “sale pending” on it, so I guess it will be someone else’s problem soon. :)
