Kent Ashton
Just thinking about the derelict Cozy discussed above https://www.canardzone.com/forums/topic/21972-sales-ive-seen/?do=findComment&comment=74124 With no engine, the seller is expecting too much ($20K). _IF_ it was a pristine engineless airplane you could acquire an engine for say, $15K-20K and you'd have a $40K airplane. Reasonable. But here, the airplane needs extensive cleanup, repairs and rewiring required; undoubtedly a buyer will find other things to fix. You have the hassle of getting it home, too. Personally, I would not trust those strakes and would rebuild them. I have rewired an airplane. One thing leads to another and eventually you end up ripping it all out and starting from scratch. I do not recognize the TVs in the panel (pic) and it would probably mean panel modernization and a panel replacement. Lots of work here. It looks sound otherwise and could be a lot of fun to get it back in the air but not at the price. Lots more pics at the website in the post. If I were the seller, here's what I'd think about: I would rather have $10K in hand that I could invest into 5 gold coins or some uranium stock. I suspect this airplane will not sell very fast and the owner will pay hangar rent for a couple of years--maybe insurance too. $300/mo X 24 months = $7200. I'd cut the price at least $7K and get my hand out of the jar. I had to take note of this F-5 for $950K (and ready to go). Got a few hundred hours in those; what a sports car! Kent Ashton
I posted this one in the wrong topic so I'm repeating it here: I see that Charles Furnweger(sp?) sold his Cozy project. He was asking $18K for the airplane and $8K for the rotary engine, engine mount, and Real World Solutions redrive so I imagine he settled for close to that. Fuselage and canard mostly complete. No wings or winglets. http://cozy.caf.org/index.php A chap named Tom from Florida was the buyer. Interesting that he started in 2005 and got this far. Taking too long tends to sap one's enthusiasm. I see guys today that seem to be taking about 4 years. IMO, that's about what it should take. He did nice work though. Maybe we will see that one flying soon. Built by a guy named "King" if you are wondering about the name. https://registry.faa.gov/AircraftInquiry/Search/NNumberResult?nNumberTxt=N6LK I went and looked at this Varieze. It is nice plane. Seemed like a turnkey bird. The plane is Day VFR only, but seems like it is already prewired to add lights to make it night capable. I’m 6’7” and I had a bit of trouble initially getting in, but was able to... I’d still need to rework the pedals by moving some things. I’m proportional, but it was a little tight at the hips. Could be addressed with some mods. If I were shorter, I would have most likely made an offer on this Varieze. I went with the LongEZ built by Steve Harmon which still requires a little work with moving the pedals to fit me but seems like a much larger cockpit fit with its long nose and O-320 motor. Kent Ashton
6'-7" in a Varieze! I'd like to have seen that. Good luck with your Harmon-EZ. I saw this idea for lengthening rudder pedals. Flip the pedal over to make them longer. Marc Zeitlin
23 minutes ago, sweekuh said: Does anyone have any comps on what this should be worth? Im located in AZ and have been after a canard for years now, and side by side is even more preferable. Any more info would be great... Any prebuy recommendations in the area? I'd expect an E-Racer to go for a bit more than a Long-EZ with the same equipment and same quality. Is this Lynn Erickson's plane? If so, I'm told that it was very high quality. But without knowing the state of the engine, it could be worth anything from $25K to $60K. The panel, while full, is old, but if everything works, there may be no need to do anything to it. If the engine's pristine, relatively low time, and the plane's show quality (doubtful from the two pics, but you never know) it could be worth more. All depends. See: https://www.burnsideaerospace.com/pre-buy-examination-information for info on the services I provide. Varieze first discussed here November 20th https://www.canardzone.com/forums/topic/21972-sales-ive-seen/?do=findComment&comment=73292 reduced from $11500 to $6500. https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/wsh/avo/d/new-richmond-varieze-project-new-price/7301436431.html Yeah, I thought it was pricey the first time through. Sometimes there are interesting things in Craig's Aviation section if you have the patience to go through them. Like this Ellison today https://portland.craigslist.org/clk/avo/d/camas-ellison-efs-throttle-body/7305953549.html The easiest way is to google search "site:craigslist.org [your item]" or if you have selected an aviation section for one city, keep clicking new cities and it will show their aviation sections. Yeah, you can waste gobs of time with that one. 😞 Edited April 17, 2021 by Kent Ashton 1 Quote -KentCozy IV N13AM-750 hrs, Long-EZ-85 hrs and sold
