Cozy MK IV seat belt source

Hi Folks: Please point me in the best direction for a (reasonable cost) vendor for seat belts and shoulder harness' for my Cozy MK IV. I am familiar with Hooker Harness and the Van's Aircraft Accessory catalog... Any others???

I didn't hear from them until after buying Hooker. Hookers are quite nice but they say Crow is much more economical.

For a Cozy, I would avoid the kind of belt below with separate latch and adjusters on each side. The belts in a Cozy are so short that there's not much space between the latch, adjuster, and belt mount which makes it awkward to pull down the straps to adjust them. They'll work, just not ideal, IMHO.

 

I had them on my Cozy and went back to simple ACS belts with the square silver latch that you pull up to release which has the belt adjustment part integrated with the latch. Pax also find them easier to adjust.

 

I like the idea of a crotch restraint, though. If you can find the simple belts with a crotch restraint, that'd be ideal (if you also have a hardpoint for the end of the crotch restraint.)

Lap belts with adjusters between the buckle and the airframe mount can work, but ideally the adjuster should be flipped around from normal practice so that you pull up on the strap to tighten rather than pulling down. Kent is right, pulling down on the loose end to tighten is very hard in our cramped cockpits. Most any custom harness maker can flip the adjuster around if asked.

the best belts for the cozy are the ones sold by ACS. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/seatbelt5.php They are designed to work in our cockpits the lap belt adjustments are at the buckles and pull out from the center. this is best because there is little room to have a buckle and a separate adjuster. if the adjuster is on the side it gets caught in the cushion and is very hard to readjust. the shoulder straps tighten by pulling down and have a release strap that is pulled up to release. reasonable price and they work perfect for our planes, and no need to re invent the seat belt

The aluminum end fittings on the Aircraft Spruce belts shown in the above link bother me. I'd like to know if they were engineered and to what loads they have been designed. They may be fine, but who knows?

Most aircraft designs are available in either aluminum or stainless.

It's more likely that you would pull out the hardpoints before the hardware failed.

They are pretty standard fittings. You will find them on lots of aircraft belts--even military.

I have two of the ACS belts for my long-ez project and the fittings are definatly steel.

I use the ACS belts and the end fittings are aluminum, but they were purchased years ago. I did make one modification to them. I added a strap of seat belt webbing with loops stitched to each end. The strap goes between the two shoulder harness belts and holds them about 9-inches apart just behind the occupants neck. This compensates for the Long-EZ mounting points which are too far apart.

Interesting. The ACS site says they have aluminium fittings also, but mine are steel. I purchased mine about a year and a half ago.
