Berkut Kit

Maybe 6 mil plastic would do better in the stretching department?

I use this occassionally, but only on flat parts, b/c it does shrink as the epoxy cures, causing bubbles to lift on complex shapes.

I prefer to use peel ply and a vacuum bag. I do the layup, apply peel ply, quilt batting from Walmart, stick it into a nylon vacuum bag tube, and seal the 2 ends w/ vacuum bag clamps. Quick, easy, and gives great results every time.

Next time I'll try a release film between the peel ply and the quilt batting, but it's always worked fine w/out it.

All I can say at this point is. There is more than one way to skin a cat. you use your methodology and I'll use mine. I'll put my layups against anyones anyday. I just don't have the time to teach an old dog new tricks.:D

Tony

I've had a little experience with Berkuts.

We didn't use wax in the molds. We used non-transferring silicon based mold release agents. It was a lot more expensive than wax.

We used wax and PVA when making a mold from a plug. We were very careful to remove any trace of wax before sealing the surface and applying mold release.

I've used perforated mylar as a release film between a laminate and the bleeder cloth, and never had a problem with it sticking to the laminate. I don't know why your mylar is sticking.

I would never use wax on an epoxy surface that was going to get a subsequent bond. Wax dissolves into every liquid epoxy hardener I've worked with.

Hey everyone..... the "inna-net" can be a strange tool, to say the least... Surfin' around may drop you where you least expect it.

Berkut Builder #13 checkin' in...... Yea.... the original owner to John Andrzejewski's jewel.

Tony, I've "speed read" your account of refurbishing a basket case into another solid build that will grace the skies..... very impressive.

About the only comfort I take in regards to parting from my kit is the finished product John turned out.

Anyone who has built one knows the tremendous time and effort one must apply.

Timing is everything... You either have the time, the effort, the money, or the desire.... Getting them together ( in all the correct proportion's) is the real challenge.

I had some friends lose their marriage, I had a friend lose his home.... and quite frankly, I lost some friends in fatals...........

BUT, that damm Berkut still haunts me.... much like it does for Lampasso...

How's Paulie doing BTW!!!!!!

But , enough about me.... I just wanted to throw some "Atta' boys" in Tony's direction. I sleep well tonight knowing that another Berkut will take its place in the sky soon.

Maybe my son will turn out to be the aviator of the family.... Here he is a few years ago, with the man.....

Burt was kind enough to fly a roll of dimes in SS1 for him ( ala' the Mercury days @ NASA)

Keep on building....

No worries Bob,

I just did not want James Redmon thinking you were laying a claim on his bird. By the way, James has the race bug big time and has done some very nice cleanup work on Race 13. If you go to his site at Berkut13 you can see all kinds of stuff he has done to his Berkut.

I would like to tell everyone about a rare opportunity I had a few weeks ago to visit Eureka CNC. I was so imppressed by the attention to detail that goes into every step of the hot wire proccess. Furthermore, I would suggest that if anyone is interested in building a Long Ez or Cozy or any other canard aircraft get your wing cores form Eureka you will not be disappointed. Steve, the owner, has wing cutting down to a science. It would be impossible for a novice or even a veteran of foam cutting to cut a set of wings out with that kind of precision. What I really liked about the whole process was the absolute use of every inch of foam, nothing is wasted. Obviously, alot of thought goes into the layout of parts. Another nice thing about Eureka cores is when you buy a set of wings or a canard, your not paying for a bunch of foam stock that will ultimately end up in the trash. In other words, when you buy foam from say, A/Spruce or Wicks you get these giant blocks of foam that you are going to pay shipping for. When your done cutting your wings your going to find that alot of that foam is scrap. With the Eureka cores you only pay for the foam that you need to make your parts. You save on shipping, you save on time, and the quality is second to none. Don't cut your wings out by hand, get the Eureka cores. Your wings and canard will build easier, faster, and lighter. I highly recommend this product to all of our builders.

I'm not only a Berkut builder I'm also a client.

Just to let Ya'll know Dick Rutan has completed his Berlut kit here are the Pics

Congrats to Dick for completing another home built... He probably was motivated after losing his C-150's engine about a year so ago!

I was lucky enough to get a ride in Glen Water's 360 Berkut in England and Jerry Parrish's 540 Berkut in Seattle, and I can tell you Dave Ronneberg got it right from stem to stern. Those two aeroplanes were absolute weapons, and the manufacturing processes Dave developed are truly something to see. He is one heck of an engineer and composite designer/fabricator.

Dick's machine with the TIO-390 should really do the business. Looking forward to some performance numbers. Should leave old blue for dead.

Cheers,
