Long-ez - What Prop?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have a Long-ez with an O-235-L2C fitted. It currently has a cruise prop fitted which with 2 up is only managing 550 ft per min but will cruise at 140 kts. I also have another 63x63 climb prop which I have never fitted. I wonder if anyone can advise what is the optimum prop for a Long-ez to improve climb without hurting the top end too much? What is the deal with composities vrs wood and 2 vrs 3 blade? Also if anyone can recommend a manufacturer that would be great to. Thanks

You will have to give up some more details ie static rpm on the ground, empty weight, all up weight, what altitude you were flying from etc.

I have an O-235 L2C with a Great American 62x62. I get 2450 on the ground and about 2800rpm top. I just had a total engine overhall andhave been breaking it in.

On an overcast day at 3000 ft, I firewalled the throttle and topped out at just about 153Kts at just about 2750rpm. The plane weighs 860 lbs empty, I weight 240 and I had about 180 Lbs of fuel on board. I haven't watched the climb with two on board recently but my guess would be something above 700 fpm. On another forum, this was very typical to three or four similar Long EZ's running the same prop. There was also some that were a little slower in the 130 to 140Kt range. For normal flying and to consere fuel, I usually fly around 130 kts.

The plane is 20 years old
