a506067 Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 Hi I'm thinking of buying a Speed Canard here in Germany but can't find any info regarding flight ops from grass airfields. Is it allowed or not? Is it recommended or not? (That nosewheel arm looks quite fragile). Many thanks for any info. David Quote
Barry in Wiregrass Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 I am new here but from what I understand (not a lot yet), the problem with grass landings in a canard aircraft is that the prop will be affected by FOD being kicked by the wheels. In my opinion, it would be better to find another type of aircraft to use on grass strips. Some of the more experienced builders/flyers might be able to give better insight into this issue. Good Luck! Quote Barry Walker Saving for a set of Cozy MKIV plans/kit and large "shed" (in that order). If I don't have the plans and start building when the "shed" is done, my wife will find another use for the "empty" space!
jperryfly Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 I've tried flying my O-320 Long Ez from a grass strip and it's just not a good experience. You get a lot of drag from the grass and basically have to bounce the nose to get it into the air. There is no prop blast to raise the nose with the elevator. Get another airplane if you only have grass. Quote Long Ez, AeroCanard
a506067 Posted September 28, 2006 Author Posted September 28, 2006 It's just that there is an aircraft dealer here selling one who, in reply to my question, replied that Speed Canards ARE certified for grass ops. Could someone who owns one please have a look in their ops manual to see if this is really correct or not? Unfortunately the dealer lives too far away for me to drop by and check the manual myself. Many thanks. David Quote
Barry in Wiregrass Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 Ask him to scan it and e-mail it to you. He should be willing if it is true. I'd still find someone other than him to verify it though. Quote Barry Walker Saving for a set of Cozy MKIV plans/kit and large "shed" (in that order). a506067 Posted September 29, 2006 Author Posted September 29, 2006 Quite true, Barry. That's why I'm hoping someone here can verify it for me as well. David Quote
