I'm in the process of assembling the aileron torque tubes/bearings/what-not.... and I've noticed a considerable amount of "slop" in the fit of the torque tube to universal joint when using the 3/4" x .058" tubing (CS151). Whereas if I use .065" wall tubing, it fits like a glove. Is this to allow for a layer epoxy primer paint or something else I haven't read about yet?

TIA

I definitely have the right stuff... although I'll check it again this evening.(The 5th time)

Maybe the term "considerable slop" was over over kill. The joint fits the thinner walled tubing "a little loosely", but they fit the thicker wall tubing perfectly (while adding <1 oz of weight). The more I think about it, I may just paint the interior of the plans tubes and be done with it. (Corrosion protection  )

John, did you.. or anyone else out there for that matter, paint the torque tubes?

Dear Skip:

I too had a fair amount of "slop" between the tubes, universal joints, and bearings. "Slop" being defined as less than perfect, machined fit, but not so wobbly that I questioned whether or not I had the right parts. All the slop went away after tightening the bolts.

I did have a good surface to surface fit between the aileron cranks on the firewall and their bronze bearings (the ones that are floxed into the firewall).

For corrosion protection, I alodined the aluminum tubes and sprayed the insides of the steel tubes with that green-colored paint (zinc-chromate, I forget what it's called). I will powder coat all outer tube surfaces. Probably overkill for where I live, But definitely something I'd consider if I lived in humid Florida.
