Long EZ plans wanted.

Recommended Posts

See the “open ez” topic in this forum or do a search for open ez. The plans and builder manual are available online. Rutan says he has no objection, just don’t call it a Long-ez. He doesn’t want the liability.

Kent thanks for the reply. I did use the open ez plans and manual. The problem is when you compare fabricated parts in the manual to parts in the plans they are different. For example the landing gear brackets in the manual say drawn to size but when compared to the plans they are completely different.

I assumed I needed an original builders manual. Not sure which is correct manual or plans.

The attach angles in the plans look pretty accurate (pic) but there are two things to know.  We no longer route the rudder cable through extra  holes in the angles.  That caused cracks to develop there.

Also on the left side of the drawing, Section A-A, see where there are 21 BID layers between the attach angle and the fuselage wall.  That's good but the outboard head of the bolt did not have so many layers and when the airplane is landed hard or heavy, the bolts tend to pull into the wood and get loose.  Marc's copyright'ed site  BurnsideAerospace.com has a pic of a repair using metal.  You ought use extra layers there and at least some wide washers under the bolt heads.

Aaron,

I have not built an EZ, Kent has lots of experience so he should get your attention.

However, I studied the plans pretty thoroughly a while back and thought I remembered something about the landing gear and CP updates. There are some...

CP 27 has a modification moving the holes in the extrusions.

CP 28 has a note about the BID plies being shown as 1 and should be 15

CP 30 has a note about the axle bolt location is not accurate, and a correction to the washers used

Might be others as well...

Wanted to say thanks to all who replied. I feel better now knowing there are people out there willing to help and give advice. I plan to move forward with my build. I have downloaded all the plans, build manual and CPs. I have taken composite classes and build classes from the EAA. I am also finishing my private pilots license. I plan to take my time and enjoy the process. Thanks again.

Absolutely do it by the means that you will most enjoy it. If you don't enjoy it you will never finish. Myself, I find it a pleasure and very satisfying to head out to the shed, even if only for a few minutes. Even if I'm just sanding (like today)!

Over the years I have acquired three sets of Long Eze plans.  One I purchased from Burt and built N33X from, IO-320 Long Ez, and the other two from project that I purchased along the way.  As far as I know the other two have not been built from but all are in fair, but used condition.   If you are still interested please contact me.   I also have a lot of parts from the two projects, enough to build a complete Long, but I am parting them out to builders that might need them.

Hi folks!

If anyone has a set of original RAF Long EZ paper plans for sale, please let me know.

I'm using the OPEN-EZ digital files (awesome)...but I'd still like to get a paper version of the original plans.

Thanks!
